All the sweaters I’ve made so far were top down and knit in the round. The sleeves extended from the shoulders, after a few rounds, they were put on waste yarn and then picked up later and finished in the round. This little doozy was knit bottom up, front was one piece, back was one piece, sleeves were each one piece. Maybe it’s because I learned the other way but I did not like this method of knitting a sweater!
All week I’ve been putting off seaming the pieces together but this morning I said to myself . . nothing fun til that sweater is finished and now . . it’s finished. I still need to steam the seams but I’ll do that next time I have the iron on.
I’m going to find a good basic kids sweater, top down, knit in the round (any suggestions?) that will be my “go to” pattern for pullovers for Addie and I can do any intarsia that I find but just use the pattern that’s constructed the way I like it. There was nothing wrong with this pattern. It was well written, easy to understand and completely correct — just not my preferred method of construction.
It definitely isn’t perfect but it was my first intarsia and I had to start somewhere, right?

Wow that sweater is just adorable! Great job! This is your first Intarsia? OMG you have a lot of talents and you are using them! That is great… Addie will love this and so will her parents a family heirloom!

I think it’s just precious! Now get in the car and deliver it….you know you want to so just go. (lol)
Really cute sweater for an adorable little girl.

I’m so ready but I can’t go til my medical issues are good enough that I know I won’t end up with kidney stone issues when I’m there. X-rays tomorrow, another test next Friday and then, if the results are all good, I should be free to go.
Sue in Scottsdale, AZ says
The sweater is absolutely adorable. The next step for you is to make an in-person delivery. What are you waiting for?
JudyL says
I still have kidney stone issues. It will be at least a week before I can get the all clear from the doctor.
Ramona says
How cute! This sweater will be just adorable on your granddaughter. I hope your medical issues are resolved so you can visit your family.
Susan says
So, that’s for Addie, but where’s yours to match? =)

That is so adorable! I hope you post a picture of her wearing it. I definitely prefer top-down sweater knitting too because otherwise I procrastinate on seaming or knitting the buttonband.

You might want to check out Knitting Pure and Simple patterns. They have a wide variety of basic patterns, and I think most are top down.

LOL! I have two sweaters started decades ago-one was top down and the other was in pieces-both are still waiting to be finished-one gets a zipper and the other gets buttons! Maybe that will happen this winter and some little girls will be warm due to my finally not procrastinating (and, I know exactly where they are in my “mess”!)

It looks great. Knitting sweaters in pieces is how I learned. I’ve knit one top down and love it – so easy. I’m looking forward to doing more.

Judy, it looks perfect to me. I knit a baby hat that I had to seam and I hated sewing up that little seam. The next baby hat will be knit in the round.

Addie will be the cutest little jack-o-lantern around this Halloween!

Cute, cute, cute! I have a sweater knit in pieces 20+ years ago that I’ve never seamed! I still like it, but have never seamed nice things.
Katie Z. says
Lovely, especially for a first time with the method. And fortunately, grand babies don’t care about the little things that bother us!

What a cute fun sweater.
Eve in GA says
That is just adorable!! Can’t wait to see the pix of Addie wearing it.
(loved this pix you posted of them, by the way!)
I have to admit that I, too, prefer top-down, in-the-round construction. That being said, my fave sweater to wear that I made was done in pieces and seamed. Contradictions!! LOL!!

When I first learned how to knit, it was only with sweaters in pieces and I HATED sewng them together. Thank God for knitting in the round.
It’s not you. It’s not fun.
Lovely sweater! She will love it! And does she look like Daddy!

That turned out so adorable.

Very cute pumpkin, wish my kids were still young enough to wear a jack-o-lantern sweater. Clover makes a bent tip needle which makes sewing knit pieces together a little easier. I prefer all in one patterns also, have you ever seen “The Wonderful Wallaby” by Cottage Creations ? Its a multi sized Kids to Adults pattern thats easy, fun, and a comfy sweater with lots of options.

Adorable! You are such an inspiration.

Judy,
I’m sure Addie will squeal with delight when she wears her new sweater. Have you ever looked at the patterns by Elizabeth Zimmerman? Her patterns are all knitted in the round using wool. I believe her books are still in print. You should check them out.

Such a cute sweater for an adorable little girl!

I just wanted to say that there are good reasons to knit a sweater in pieces. One is that seams give the sweater structure. Sweaters that have no seams can stretch after numerous washings. They are easier to tailor and are more portable if you knit away from home. And it is easier to rip out if you make a mistake!

It came out really cute, Judy!
