Why are weeds so much easier to grow than the things you want to grow? Even though I manage to do a halfway decent job of keeping the weeds out of the area where the plants are growing, I had about lost control in the other areas, especially where the water line comes in. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a baby rattler in those weeds and I keep thinking mom probably isn’t too far away. I was holding my breath every time I had to turn the water on and off, hoping there wasn’t a snake in there. And, the hoses were just a mangled up mess and the area was getting so muddy . . it was truly a jungle.
Some of them were wild flowers and that was my excuse for not chopping them down before they got out of hand. Even though they were pretty, that was not a good place for toes or fingers to be!
Vince came to my rescue! He started by pulling out the tangled mess of water hoses.
The he whacked down all the weeds. Do you know that he’s still using the same weed whacker that he bought when he first finished college . . many, many years ago? Darn near 40 years ago! It’s a Stihl brand. I’m impressed.
Then he put down the black weed cloth.
Then he covered it with mulch.
Then he put all my hoses out and re-connected the sprinklers and I’m back in business without having to hope there are no snakes lurking in the tall grass and weeds.
What a difference a little work and a lot of mulch can make. So much better!! Thanks Vince.

Looks like a great solution. Mt Dad also likes to put tarps over weeds, especially an old brick walkway. Cheers! Eveltn

Those wild flowers are my favorite kind! Love them. I’ve tried to grow them up here in PA, but have never had any luck. Your area near your garden looks MUCH better now! 🙂 I really enjoy all your posts…don’t reply a lot, but still enjoy them. Thanks!

1. Vince is a keeper! But you already knew that
2. Stihl is a good brand.
3. Why (oh why!!!) are you still mentioning toes and snakes in the same sentence?????????? Especially in the context of overgrown weeds and hoses.
4. If it isn’t growing where it’s supposed to, no matter how pretty it is, it’s a weed and eventually you will rue the day.
My hubby thought that the errant ironwood that grew by the pool fence (where rambler roses grew) weren’t weeds. They weren’t when they were making a hedge on the property line;
they were when they were caught in the fencing. And they have impossible roots!

Yikes! Snakes and weeds? Go Vince! I’ve always wondered howcome weeds grow better than anything else. If you ever figure out the reason, let me know. Thankfully, we don’t have poisonous snakes on this side of the mts., but the weeds are certainly abundant!

I am impressed. Functional and also looks great! Go Vince!

Geez I hope that story I told you about mom getting bit by the rattlesnake didn’t rattle you! Seeing that happen has made me VERY cautious now. I think she was just getting in her “mode” and wasn’t thinking about snakes at the time. Stay alert out there.
