Step 1:
Note: When we are making half square triangles, you can follow the instructions given or make them according to your favorite method. The ones in today’s instructions need to be 3-1/2″ unfinished or 3″ finished and you will need 8 of them.
Fabrics 2 and 3 – Cut 4 – 4″ squares. Draw on diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter colored squares. Layer a Fabric 2 and Fabric 3 square and sew a scant 1/4″ seam on both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. Press seam allowances towards Fabric 2. Trim the squares so that they are 3-1/2″
Step 2:
Cut the following pieces and label them as to which fabrics are which.
Fabric 1:
- 4 – 4-1/4″ squares, each cut on the diagonal twice to yield 16 triangles.
Fabric 2:
- 2 – 4-1/4″ squares, each cut on the diagonal twice to yield 8 triangles.
- 8 – 4″ squares, each cut on the diagonal once to yield 16 triangles.
Fabric 3:
- 4 – 4″ squares, each cut on the diagonal once to yield 8 triangles.
Fabric 4:
- 2 – 4-1/4″ squares, each cut on the diagonal twice to yield 8 triangles.
Fabric 5:
- 4 – 4-1/4″ squares, each cut on the diagonal twice to yield 16 triangles.
Step 3:
Using the triangles, create 8 of each of the following. Pay attention to the placement of each fabric .. it will make a difference. There should be just a scant amount of trimming necessary to get them to 3-1/2″ unfinished.
For the first one (Unit A), the small triangles are Fabrics 1 and 5. Press the seam allowances towards Fabric 5. The larger triangle is Fabric 2. Press the seam allowances towards Fabric 2.
For the second one (Unit B), the small triangles are Fabrics 1 and 5. Press the seam allowances towards Fabric 5. The larger triangle is Fabric 3. Press the seam allowances away from Fabric 3 (towards the smaller triangles).
For the third one (Unit C), the small triangles are Fabrics 2 an 4. The larger triangle is Fabric 2. Press the seam allowances towards Fabric 2.
Step 4:
Sew four Unit C pieces together to make a pinwheel. Make 2.
Step 5:
Sew a Unit A and a Unit B together. Make 8. Press the seam allowances towards Fabric 2.
Attach the units from Step 4 to two opposite sides of the pinwheel section. Make 2. Press the seam allowances towards the center.
Sew a Half Square Triangle from Step one to both ends of the remaining units from Step 4. Make 4. Press the seam allowances away from the center.
Sew the pieces from Step 6 to the top and bottom of the pinwheel section to complete the block. Make 2.
The blocks should measure 12-1/2″ unfinished or 12″ finished. Please be sure your blocks are the correct size.
If your January through May blocks are done, please share a picture. On Thursday, June 5, I will draw for the winner . . who will receive a Stash Pack from Vicki Welsh’s Etsy Shop. When you need (or want) hand dyed fabric, please remember Vicki . . who sponsors this Mystery.
