Most of us love (and need) bargains. We’ve had some hefty increase in price notices around here lately – everything from the appraisal on our house going up 40%, thus our taxes going up steeply, to a hefty increase in our homeowner’s insurance. If I truly think about how quickly costs are rising and how quickly retirement time is approaching, it’s downright scary so . . I just don’t think about it much. Not much I can do about it but in my way of thinking, we’re going to put aside “x” amount of $$ for savings each month so no matter how much things go up, that just means I have that amount less that I can spend so finding a bargain is always good.
For anyone who needs paint/stain, Home Depot here has their Sikkens “Solid Exterior Finish”. I think it’s a solid (opaque) stain but I’m not real sure . . anyway . . it was originally about $40 (or more) per can. Last week we were there to get paint for the chicken coops and it was marked down to $24. Vince just painted part of the coop and he liked the paint/stain a lot so he went back to get more. I think it’s a brand/item they’re closing out. Last night when he went back to get more, it was marked down farther – to $9.83 per gallon. That’s a big difference over $40 something per gallon.
Also, Krogers in our area have Heritage Farm or Pilgrim’s Pride chickens on sale for .77/pound with a $10 purchase. Kroger seems to have different sales in different areas so I’m not sure where these prices are valid but that’s a good price these days for chickens. There’s a limit of 2 but when we’re out over the weekend, I will get 2, and probably get 2 more next week if I’m down there and can them.
Chicken is one of my favorite meats to can. I like to add a bay leaf or two to each jar, a bit of cumin, salt and red pepper. The canned chicken is so good for casseroles, gumbo, chicken salad, enchiladas, etc. and the broth in the jar is rich and ready to use!

Thanks for the heads up on the paint. I’ve been thinking about painting my deck, because it doesn’t look like it’s ever going to get stained. This would be a huge savings over water sealing or staining anyway. I’ll check our Home Depot.

I’ve been wanting to try the laundry soap and checked out the prices on Amazon for the components. Just got back from Walmart where it was a lot cheaper. $25 vs $8 and I know I won’t be using all of the washing soda and borax.
Checking prices does pay off.

I’ve been a bit disappointed lately in some of the Amazon prices. It does pay to check prices.

How thoughtful of you!

Judy, you have to use a pressure canner for meat, right? (Sorry if that’s a stupid question but … )
JudyL says
Yes!

That is not a stupid question! It’s a very important question when considering canning. Pressure canners can be fairly inexpensive all the way to very expensive. Presto makes a decent canner. I used the same one for about 20 years and it’s still a good canner.
