Last night the baby chicks . . not the newest baby chicks . . but the older baby chicks . . spent the night in their bigger home. They had been in a rubber tub and they had outgrown that and got moved into a huge cardboard box so I was really happy to get them in the coop.
The plan was to move them right before dark so we went ahead and put them in the “holding pen” and fixed a cardboard box for them to get into just in case it rained. Crazy us .. thinking it might rain here! 🙂
There are some pretty little bantams in there. The two above are two of my favorites. There are 12 bantams and 6 Iowa Blues. Once they get a little bigger, we’ll put the bantams in the bantam coop with the other 7 bantams and the one White Leghorn who thinks she’s their mom.
I think the 13 newest babies (7 that hatched and 6 black copper marans that we bought) will be combined with the 6 Iowa Blues. Once the latest batch of eggs (72) hatch, we’ll figure out what to do. I’m thinking that maybe, if we’re lucky, 40 of those will hatch and probably half of them will be roosters. I’ll keep one or two roosters and try to find homes for the others, so in the end, I’m hoping to have about 20 chickens on each side of the new coop.
They were scared to death in their new home but once they get used to it, they’ll love having the extra room.
This was one tired chicken daddy and he was happy to have this project behind him. He works hard around here but I’ve never seen him work quite so hard to get a project done. Tonight, other than watering and feeding the chickens, we’re sitting on the porch, having a glass or two of wine, and we’re doing nothing! Tomorrow, we get started building bluebird boxes . . another project!

I see that Vince has his boots on … hope you’re not still wearing flip-flops (and this from a barefoot kinda gal, too!) and having your tootsies say “hello” to the passing snakeypoos (oh that I thought they were so cute and benign to have such a cutsie nickname). The chickens are delightful but I’m missing the regular Boots updates and precious photos. And he’s way cuter than a bunch of canning jars …even filled ones.

Do you have any purple martin houses or bat houses? Maybe the better question is – how are the mosquitoes?
By the way, the last few pictures of Vince looks like he has lost some weight!

I have a friend who has bluebirds in Ohio and if she doesn’t get the mealworms out fast enough, they knock on her kitchen window. to get her attention. This has been happening for several years now.
