There’s a picture so don’t go any farther if you don’t want to see it.
Chickens truly will tell us when there’s something out of the ordinary. This is a post I did a while back about chickens being tattletales.
I had been having so much fun checking in and watching the little chicks in their new home. After we finished lunch, I told Vince . . let’s go look at the chickens.
As we were walking out to the coop with the babies, Vince said “Look at Wilbur. He sees something.” Wilbur is the big rooster and he sees everything . . hawks, vultures, rabbits . . strangers . . he always lets us know when something is out of the ordinary. I cautiously walked around the corner of the first coop and was expecting to see a fox or something but I didn’t see anything. As I walked a little closer to the other coop, I was still watching to see what Wilbur saw. I happened to glance under the coop and oh, my goodness . . a HUGE snake!
I said “Vince! Is THAT a snake? Yep, and he took care of it!
He’s at least six feet long . . longer if his front portion wasn’t blown off! Poor little chickens in the coop . . I’m sure it scared them half to death since he was under their coop and they weren’t expecting it.
It will be a very long time before I go out there without thinking about that snake.

You always warn there is a picture and I’m terrified of snakes but I have to look on anyway. I first put my feet in the air and then look on and always do a little dance on my couch, look on the floor and then laugh. Every time without fail.

Oh, wow – that would drive me straight out of Texas for sure! (Speaking strictly for myself, not you.)
JudyL says
That, along with the notice of our property taxes going up, may be enough to do it for us too. 🙁
Linda Mincher says
Wow! That is one big snake!
Carmen says
Ick! What kind of snake was it??
JudyL says
Technically, it’s a Texas Rat Snake but it’s commonly known as a chicken snake. They eat small chickens, eggs, rats, squirrels, etc.

I’m feeling a lot better about what I thought was a large snake my cat happily brought to me outside this morning. It was about 2.5′ long and had a big stripe on its back. I could only say “cat/snake, cat/snake/ cat/snake!! Luckily a neighbor “saved my life” and he was thrown in the pond! Vince is my second hero of the day… Maybe I need chickens too!
Joyce says
A snake that size could eat lots of little chickens. Yuck! Was it a poisonous type?
JudyL says
Not poisonous but it does eat chickens and eggs.
Toni Wood says
Okay, the most important question is this: did you or not have on your boots?
JudyL says
Busted . . I had on flip flops.
Eve in GA says
You and Vince are very good “Chicken Mama and Chicken Daddy”!! And I’m interested in hearing whether or not you had on your boots, too! LOL!!
At any rate, glad y’all got it!

When I was a little girl rattlesnakes lived under the garage. Mom hated snakes and shot them regularly(she was a really good marksman). She, however, never disposed of the bodies. That was Dad’s job so we often came home to school to a dead snake in the driveway. Our snakes were never as big as your snake. THANK GOODNESS!!!

We have a 6ft long blacksnake who has been visiting the guinea coop for the last 5 summers. When he first came around we would rake him out if the coop, but he kept going back in. Now we just let him visit. Since I only have one female guinea and she is gettng too old to lay much, I don’t care if he gets the eggs. The guineas don’t seem to mind him. It’s about time for him to show up again….now if he were a BAD snake, he’d be a-gonner.

Hmmmm…seems I asked earlier about you and your flipflops. Please be careful. Those of us out here in cyberland shouldn’t be more concerned about your tootsies than you are. Sure glad Vince gave that snake some Texas justice. Yea Vince!
Mary C in WA says
EWWWW! Glad you went out to see what was up in the Chicken Coop! Did Vince take his gun with him out there?
Poor scaredy Chickens.
