Most nights when I close the chicken coops up, I peek in on the chickens to see how they’re doing. The three Dominique chickens, 1 rooster and 2 hens, had lived in their coop alone for a very long time but the red hen, who was ousted from her coop, is now residing with the three Dominique chickens. At first she wasn’t happy to be in there and the Dominiques weren’t happy to have her in there.
The sleeping arrangements had always been that the rooster slept in the middle . . with the hens on each side of him. The red hen, for about a week now, has been sleeping in one of the nesting boxes.
Last night when I looked in on them . . this is what I saw:
Look at that! The red hen has booted one of the black hens and now she’s sleeping next to Wilbur! All this time, he had his two faithful, loyal girls. A new one moves in and one of the old ones is on the end . . all by herself . . no one to snuggle with. Sad! I expected more from Wilbur!

I’ve always thought it was funny that chickens would get up on a little strip of wood and sleep. You’d think they’d fall off when they fall asleep. Always wondered why they never just slept on the ground.

My guess is over time it was for safety reasons from predictors, butJudy is the expert.
