Spam and outside threats are becoming a real burden. Almost every day I was getting close to 2,000 spam comments. The comments very rarely get through to the blog but go into a spam folder . . of sorts. I can hit a “delete spam” button but because of settings due to the “outside threats”, the process of deleting spam times out after so many seconds and only about 70 comments got deleted. It was taking me forever each night to dump all that. After 15 days, I think the program automatically dumps the ones that are that age but 15 days x 2000 messages per day is a whole lot of junk in my . . I don’t know what you call it but it’s a whole lot!
I’ve talked to my blog lady and the guy who hosts the blog and they want to keep that time out period where it is to hopefully keep other bad things from happening so what I’ve done to hopefully help (and so far it has . . as of 2:30 p.m., I only have 17 spam messages today) is I’ve changed the setting so that no comments can be left on blog posts older than 20 days. So if you go back to an old blog post and try to leave a comment, the comments are closed. I don’t often get comments on those old posts so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem and looks like it’s going to help me a lot.
You can always email me if you need to tell me something . . hit the contact button (right end on the red sidebar) and the email address pops right up.

WOW, Judy, that’s a whole lotta crap!!! I have never had a spam comment so is it because your blog is so popular, you have sponsors or just mean people? I know you’re not alone & I’m NOT tech saavy so have no clue how all this works. Never had any idea a major blog like yours was so much work! Thank you for all you do, Judy!!!

Hate the spam, I have to delete 40-50 spam a day. Luckily only have to hit two buttons.

Can you set the thing where we have to type in words or letters before we post? I know it’s a pain, but it might help cut back on the spam

I agree with you. You have so much traffic, there are lots of those spam things. I probably would set mine at no more than 14 days, and maybe only 7, if I had that much spam. Bots get into things – I lost a whole wiki because when I realized my bill was sky high and investigated, some bot was posting all kinds of LONG articles on my wiki, and I thought I’d had it protected. There was just no way to get rid of it all except to delete the wiki. You are smart to do this.

I so get where your coming from. I to get quite a bit of spam, certainly not as bad as your problem. I do try to keep it as clean as possible, but I have comments set so that only those who’ve been previously approved can then comment again, and those who are new have to hopefully know that I do check my spam content for there messages. It can get tricky tho and I have actually closed comments on pages where the spam seems to hit heavily. I find it interesting that some pages get more comments on them than others as well. Either or, it is a problem.

Spam is a huge problem for a lot of bloggers. Most have taken to having us type in letters or numbers. On a related note, my house phone picks up almost nothing but sales calls despite being on the DNC list.
