Addie has quilts made by Granny (me) and her Great Grandma (my mom), and lots of crocheted baby blankets made by Nicole’s Aunt Gina and friends. Chad and Nicole were both working at Wal-Mart and they got so many crocheted blankets from ladies who worked with them, many of whom they didn’t even know! It was after Nicole had gone back to work that a lady approached her and said “You had a baby, didn’t you?” and handed Nicole a blanket. Nicole stated to tell the lady that they had so many and didn’t need any more but she accepted it and thanked the lady.
That blanket has turned out to be Addie’s favorite! She likes it even better than the ones I made her with the Minkee on the back. She loves it because she can lace her fingers through the holes.
You rarely see Addie that she doesn’t have it with her. She sleeps with it so any little “accident” from either end and the blanket gets washed so it’s getting a bit threadbare.
We decided that before that one falls completely apart, I’ll make her something similar. Nicole found the “Bring It On Baby Blanket” and we think Addie will like it.
It will be made wider, maybe about 40″ wide, and longer. Nicole and I got on The Loopy Ewe‘s website and chose Cascade Ultra Pima in the colors shown above. I’m going to use a few rows of Buff colored yarn in between each other color. She will probably never love the new one as much as she loves the old one but at least she’ll have a replacement blanket with “finger holes” in it when the other one is too shredded to use.
There’s definitely not enough hours in the days to get all the knitting done that I would like to get done!

That’s so true, and you have such a good idea! I wish I had thought of that when my youngest grand was small. She has a quilt I made before I really knew what I was doing, and it’s been washed so many times it’s just disappearing before our eyes. You can only patch things together for so long. It”s on its second backing and been bound over the top of the binding, it’s just a rag but she loves it. And that, friends, is the best argument I have for using the best materials you can get your hands on.

Little ones and their blankies……my little one still sleeps with her blankie and she is well into her 30s. Granddaughter just gave up her crocheted “Big Blankie” last year (she is now 14) when I bribed her with a new quilt. She often asks about it. I’ll keep it forever. 🙂 I think it’s sweet that you are going to make her a new one. She will love it.

Yes, Imade my granddaughter an eye spy quilt. It was interesting to see how each square deteriorated at a different rate some squares becoming threadbare, others still like new. It was larger and she used it for maybe 4-5 years before I got busy with a new quilt. Loved making it, loved watching her use it. Now she has several to choose from, my pleasure.

Oh, Judy! I know exactly what you are talking about. My stepson had a blanket that was so threadbare, that it was finally beyond patching. Just like Sue said, it was disappearing before our eyes. So, when our daughter came along, I made flannel backed small quilts, minkee with satin on the back, crocheted ones and knitted one but I ensured I had enough supplies with each new blankie to be able to duplicate whichever one my daughter adopted as “The One”. She picked the ONLY one I couldn’t duplicate. A blanket given as a gift from Churchill Weavers in Berea, KY. It was way too expensive for me to have a second one and the reason she adopted it as exactly what you said. She could stick her fingers between the holes. She is in her 20s. It is so fragile now but she still sleeps with it under her pillow where she can keep her fingers on it.

I’ll bet you make time to get this project done 😉 Something about those granddaughters make your heart melt, don’t they?

I am making a minkee blanket(both sides 1 and a half yds by 1 and a half yds,. That should be large enough for a while until the little one gets into toddler hood. Addie is cute and I can imagaine she saids some cute things. Pat

Isn’t it funny the things they get attached to? All 3 of my boys had “blankies.”” My youngest had a knit one with holes in it that my mother made and he put his fingers through the hole and squeezed the bumps. My granddaughter has a little stuffed pig, which she calls “Piggy.” (They actually have several of them that they switch out when 1 needs to be washed). She goes nowhere without ‘Piggy. One of hers had the leg come off and her other grandma stitched it back on. That has now become her “Owie Piggy”.” My husband had surgery recently, and she came over the day before he went to the hospital and she gave him Owie Piggy to take to the hospital with him because he was going to get a bit owie.
They all have their lovies, don’t they? .
