Sometimes I feel like I’m being overly picky but when there’s something I don’t like . . I just don’t like it! I don’t like my ball winder! The first ball winder I bought lasted a few years and then when it broke, I went through the “I need a better yarn winder” period and then ended up ordering another inexpensive winder.
It does the job but it’s a pain to use it and when I have more than one ball of yarn to wind, I dread it! With socks, it usually involves winding one skein at a time. Doing sweaters, sometimes I have to wind 7 or 8 or more balls at one time.
Through the years, I’ve entertained the idea of getting an electric winder but so far, I haven’t found one that I was overly impressed with and the only one that I would consider is way out of my price range.
The other day, while reading another knitter’s blog, I came across a post about this winder.
It’s terribly expensive but . . the reviews on Amazon are all positive. I did a search and found other knitters using it and loving it. If it lasts forever and if I like it and it makes me not mind winding yarn, it would be worth it, right? I haven’t shown it to Vince yet. Maybe I’ll ask him to wind some of my yarn and when he sees how much trouble it is, maybe he’ll then be receptive to the idea of a much nicer winder!

I have that yarn winder and love, love, love it. Got mine on eBay at substantially less than other online resources. Keep an eye out for one … they CAN be found!

There was a gorgeous wooden ball winder at Knitting East last fall – I think it was in the $150 range but not sure. They also had a wonderful Swift and that was a couple of hundred.

Maybe try having him hold the yarn and wind it? Actually I have the Royal one and like it fine.

That is a very nice winder, but pricey…I would be afraid to show that to Vince because with his wood working skills he would want to make it. And I’m sure he could when “He has time”. That is what my husband says when I show him things—but, time is usually not in the equation.

I have a Strauch winder and swift. It does big cakes. Love it.

That looks similar to the kinds of winders that yarn shops use. I figure if they like them, they must be good. They would go crazy with a winder that doesn’t work well…

OH let me know if you decide on an electric one .. I want one but decisions decisions ya know ?
Right now I use (and don’t laugh) a little M&M dispenser that came with M&M’s in it .. Its a hallow tube but its long enough to wind yarn around .. But it works for now ……
