This morning while Vince and I were discussing whether I would spend 3 minutes each morning rolling oats by hand, or whether we would spend almost $500 on an electric flaker, I kept a very straight face . . all the while wanting to crack up at Mr. Tightwad’s enthusiasm over a bowl of oatmeal. Then, he said these words:
“Let’s look at what’s in the pantry and get rid of the stuff we’re never going to eat!”
With a very serious and panic stricken expression, I said:
Me: Do you have a phone handy?
Vince: Why?
Me: We need to call 911.
Since I’ve been having an issue with a kidney stone, he was fixing to jump to get a phone and I said:
Me: There’s something seriously wrong with YOU!
And we both laughed!
In the past when we’ve gone on diets, I’ve begged to throw out junk like potato chips, boxes of pasta mixes, cookies, candy . . the crap they put on sale after Valentine’s Day and Easter that Vince buys buy the truckload (almost), and he never will throw any of it out. Today, he’s ready to throw it all out and he said “It’s different this time!” He explained that before, he was giving up things he really liked, in order to lose weight. Now, he sees that there’s not enough, if anything, good in the candy and snacks that he has liked for so long.
My weakness is cookies and pies and home baked goodies so I’ve not had so much of a problem with junk food that needs to be tossed. There was a time, not too many years ago, when I would chew 20 pieces of bubble gum a day and I was hardly ever without a wintergreen Lifesaver in my mouth but my teeth began to suffer so I had to stop that bad habit.
What Vince doesn’t know is that when I cleaned out the pantry, I threw out most of the junk that we wouldn’t be eating for a while. I know that most of you know this because many have shared it with me . . but it is SO much easier to completely change your eating habits when both parties are not only willing, but excited with the changes.
I’m proud of Vince for making this change. I am thankful every day that he will eat most anything I serve him, he will try most anything I suggest so long as he knows I’ve done enough research that I’m not blindly jumping off a cliff, and in general, he’s just a willing participant to all my crazy ideas — whether it be a new recipe, a kitchen gizmo or a kitchen re-do. I am one lucky wife!

Judy ,
Here is the thing. You need to be taking Calicumn Citrate pills. They help to prevent kidney stones. What is happening is this. All the good things you eat have isoletts(sp) in them. . Like all you nice good green stuff,, ice tea, and other really good for you stuff. These isolets build up and cause kidney stones in us. But if you take calicum citrate it helps to prevent the buildup. Now Tea, coffee, and dr. peppers have this stuff in them too sorry to say.
The summer time is when more kidney stones are formed than nay other time of the year due to OUR ICED TEA. Yep I know us southerns love our tea. I get my tea from Australia it is grown in the rain forest there. This in turn helps with tannic acid that causes isolets so I’m told by my gastro doctor who did surgery.
Run don’t walk and get you some calicum citrate pills and take and keep yourself from ever haveing stones again.
There is one more thing that can cause them. It is an over active parathyroid. You might get that checked out also. The parathyroid leaches the calicum out of your bones. Can be fixed and it stops asap. Simple blood test can see if you have extra calicum in your blood if so then a special necular test to see if parathyroid is out of whack.
This is more information than you wanted but having had a kidney stone the size of you thumb. I know you pain first hand.Good Luck checking it out.

Soooooooooo? What did you decide about the oat flaker? I’ve never even heard of such a gizmo, but it sure sounds interesting!

Steel cut oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfaasts. It seems it always tastes better with a piece of butter toast though. lol
Now if I could just say no to all bread, that would be a miracle. I am trying to cut down since reading your success.
Thanks for all the info on your diet.
