This is Vince’s plate. I had one egg but his plate was prettier so his got photographed this morning. I looked at gluten free English muffin recipes and ended up buying these already made but will try to make my own next week.
I had never had a poached egg! This was a first for me and it was good. I kinda trimmed away a lot of the white . . I need to learn to like the whites but right now, I don’t.
As I’ve been looking at recipes that work with our new way of eating, I kept coming across recipes that included poached eggs. I told Vince “So many recipes use poached eggs” and he said “I LOVE poached eggs!” Well, it only took me 20 years to hear that.
While we were out shopping yesterday, I found this little egg poaching insert.
It was $9 so I showed it Vince and no .. he said you had to have a special pan with a lid . . this just wouldn’t do. We stood there in the store discussing it. There are plenty of pans, with lids in this house and reading the instructions on the little insert, it said to put water in a pan, oil the insert cups, add the eggs once the water is boiling, put the lid on and . . done! I figured . . why buy another pot for at least twice as much, when this would do so I got it. A dollar saved is a dollar that can be spent on yarn, right?
Vince was hovering in the kitchen this morning as I was poaching my first eggs. He said “timing is critical!”. I was thinking . . isn’t that the truth? 🙂
Before I could even get the first eggs poached, he had ordered this pan!
When he was growing up, they ate lots of poached eggs and their egg poacher was a separate pan, with its own lid, with little removable cups. I don’t see an issue with using the one I bought but, now we’ve gone from no egg poachers to two egg poachers!
I’m glad I bought asparagus yesterday because tonight, we’re having asparagus with poached eggs!

I grew up on poached eggs. and still on of my favorites. Can’t wait until I can start making them again. I have the pan Vince ordered but for 6. That would make 2 for each f us when Dad was staying with us. I have used the insert but wold tend to get too much water n then my eggs would be watery. For me, the pan is better!
Karen says
what a pretty pan Vince ordered! I like poached eggs I just never make them because I don’t have the pan and I get too much water in the insets like what you have shown that you had gotten
Katherine says
Huh. I don’t poach eggs much now, but I used to and I always just used a regular pan with a lid. No insert or anything. Just start like a fried egg and then add a little water and put a lid on it. Now I do more just fried eggs as that’s what DH and the kids prefer.

I love eggs! When I poach mine I bring water to a boil swirl it like a little tornado, slide the egg in to the middle and cook for 3 minutes (or whatever your personal preference may be you can adjust the time). Then remove the egg with a slotted spoon and serve. No special pan needed and more $$ for fun stuff.
Judy, you are right about the egg whites being bland. While I have developed a taste for them over time but typically, they get sprinkled with a blend of garlic and herbs.

When I was growing up my mother would make us “dropped eggs on toast,” which was poached eggs cooked in an ordinary pan and put on top of toast made from white bread. My, that was a long time ago!

I have the little insert at home and loved it! Poached eggs are a favorite in our house 🙂

Because I’ve eaten poached eggs every morning for breakfast for the last thirty plus years, I have an electric egg poacher.
I don’t have to watch it or time it. I just add the amount of water that corresponds to the time I want, then walk away and do other things. I wouldn’t be without it.

I did not the insert either and bought the pan that Vince purchased………..
We were given a Hamilton Beach Breakfast Maker for
Christmas and I have used it almost every day since……
The bread toast perfectly and the egg is done just right….

If you use just a plain pan, and want the whites to be tight, add a bit of vinegar to the water. Poached/ dippy are my favorite and it takes a good cafe cook to make them right.
As for the fry pan with egg and add a bit of water then lid: that is called a basted egg. The whites are different then.

Lemon pepper perks up any kind of egg…….

I love poached eggs on toast. It was a special treat when I was a kid. I poach mine in the microwave and love it!

I have both styles of egg poachers and have to say I love the one like Vince ordered the most. Easier to lift out the little cups and dump the egg rather than dig one of out the other style. They both work, though!

We had poached eggs today too. My hubby makes them in boiling water and a slotted spoon too. We are doing good with our eating too. I have lost 18 lbs so far so I’m happy.

I like eggs cooked by any method, so long as the yolks are cooked until they are solid. It’s odd, I know, but I literally cannot swallow a runny egg.
Sherrill says
I’ve never had poached–just mostly eat over medium. I had the BEST asparagus a couple of weeks ago. Kroger had it on sale for like $1.88 (I think) and it was SO THIN and tender. LOVE IT!

Growing up, I too had the one like Vince ordered (cuz that’s the way it was done!). I do think you will like having the individual cups for the eggs….especially if your eggs are a bit larger. I have the newer gizmo and the eggs are too much liquid for the shallow cups.

Yum poaced eggs on toast or even better eggs benedict using ham instead of canadian bacon! I like to use the Tony Cachere
Seasoning on my eggs or some of the Penzeys seasonsonings like the Northwest or southwestern seasoning.

Poached eggs were comfort food when I was growing up – it is what I would get when I was recovering from being sick. so funny – I have been thinking about the recently too. Went to Bed Bath & Beyond and decided on the insert because it was ridiculous to buy another pan! (sure wish I knew what I did with my mom’s!) But I haven’t made them yet. I am very very picky about my egg whites – if they are the least bit runny I cannot deal with them – they make me gag….
Linda says
Oh, I love poached eggs! I’m not much of a fan of the whites either, Judy, but if I break the yolk and mix it up enough, I can get them down. They’re good protein, so I try to eat them. I have silicone egg poachers that are perforated and hang off the side of the pan. I really like them. Pretty easy to clean up too.

Hahahaha — Y’all crack me up, Judy! Thanks for the laugh – I needed that this evening after a hard day’s work. 😉 But now, reading all the comments, I’m wondering how it’s possible that I have NEVER in my entire life had a poached egg? And I even have a pan with one of those special inserts – I’ve just never used it. I thought about it. Once. But …. I’m impatient. I either grab a boiled egg out of the fridge or scramble up a couple really quickly if I want something “fancy” …. and we go through a couple dozen eggs each week (at least one dozen boiled, hanging out in the fridge waiting to be eaten as a snack). I ‘spose it’s time to try that special pan’s insert, eh?
Dorothy Schreyer says
I love poached eggs, what I learned to make them in just a regular pan and water. I think my mom did have the insert at one time though, years later. May have to make them for breakfast tomorrow.

Like many of the others, I grew up on poached eggs and often made them for my children. I always just used a regular small frying pan and just gently dropped my egg into the boiling water. They were delicious. I still have them from time to time.
Sandi H says
I just take a regular ot fill it with water add a teaspoon or more of white vinegar and brink it to a boil. Then I take it either off the heat or on low and crack first one then a second egg in. She it gets to how I like it I remove with a slotted spoon and enjoy. No extra bits to Lois and easy cleanup.
Debra says
I also grew up on poached eggs and still eat them. My grandmother used a separate pan similar to Vince’s pan. My husband eats only scrambled eggs. I found a microwave egg poacher at a kitchen store and use that to make his perfectly scrambled poached egg by mixing up the egg with a teaspoon of water before adding it to the poacher. He loves them made like this….Quick and easy, no additional fat.

What kind were the gf english muffins? I haven’t seen them yet in our stores… maybe I can ask for them – thanks!
