Saturday and yesterday were just gorgeous! Sunny and warm . . in the low to mid 70’s. I have a sunburn to prove that it was bright and sunny. Saturday Vince tilled up the garden. There was one row of struggling spinach left but pretty much everything else in the garden was ready to come out so I asked Vince if he would till up everything to the left of the spinach.
This is what it looked like when I began planting. Soon, it was full and there were still things I wanted to get planted so I asked Vince if he would till up a little more.
Always willing to help, he stopped what he was doing and came and tilled up more rows for me.
By the time I stopped, I had planted:
- 1 row of onions
- 1 row of beets (bull’s blood)
- 1 row of beets (cylindra)
- 1 row of mesclun lettuce mix
- 1 row of buttercrunch lettuce
- 1 row of kale
- 1 row of broccoli raab
- 1 row of Brussels sprouts
- 1 row of carrots
- 1 row of chard
- 1 row of spinach
- 2 rows of sweet peas
Space remains to plant one or maybe two rows of potatoes. I have some broccoli and cabbage seeds started in the greenhouse and that’s proably all the planting I will do til time to plant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, and the like for the summer garden.
It’s a good thing we didn’t rely on the old fence to protect the garden.
And this little dude just wants to know when the carrots and lettuce will be ready for consumption.
We were able to get within 2 feet of this little bunny. He was being as still as he could be but he had to have known we were looking at him. He’s really pretty . . kinda brownish gray mottled.

You’re killing me…where it is not even supposed to get above zero here in southern Minnesota today! When I clicked the link to your post, I actually thought you were going to tell us what seeds you ordered for your garden, not what plants you put in already!!!

he must be pretty brave. Looks like part of your shadow is right there by him. I’d think that would scare him away. Can’t even THINK of gardening here yet – there’s miles of huge snow piles everywhere – NW Indiana . ..

My father always used to joke he was planting a restaurant for the rabbits! You could sense them watching and waiting…

Sounds like some good eating. My back hurt just thinking of all the work you did

Serious envy going on from here in Michigan with 2+ feet of snow cover. I so much want to stick my feet in freshly tilled ground!!! Or even see a blue sky!! Thanks for a reminder of what we have to look forward to when Spring finally arrives!

Great looking garden. I’ve tried broccoli raab, but had mixed results. I think I was waiting too long to cut it since it doesn’t form a big broccoli head like regular. I’ll have to try it again.

I just started building a couple more garden beds. I’m glad I haven’t started planting yet though because winter is determined to hang around. It is currently raining and supposed to go down below freezing tonight. I’m tired of winter. This is like the fourth or fifth freezing spell we’ve had this winter and that is extremely unusual. I’m so looking forward to spring and doing some real gardening.
By the way, the bunny looks like an eastern cottontail.

Another envious one here! Last year, my work hours and the weather didn’t allow me to plant my garden. This year, it will happen even if I only use containers. I can’t wait to feel soil in my hands and smell grass.

Another ignorant city girl question: since there’s a flower called “sweet pea,” do you get a pretty row of blossoms before the pods form?

So is a bunny hutch next? It really does NOT taste like chicken. Not even with BBQ sauce. =)

I always love your gardening photos, but the bunny takes the cake! We have bunnies, too. They’re different than your bunny (not sure what kind?), but your bunny’s so pretty! Do you ever throw veggies out to them? (I used to leave carrots out & D would be SO mad! LOL. But I would watch them chowing down, so I couldn’t resist!)
