We’ve finished out our first month on our new eating plan. Basically, we are doing my version of Paleo but we didn’t start on the strict 30 day plan . . we just cut out all sugar (except what I sneak), we cut out all flour, all gluten in fact (except what I sneak). We’ve basically been eating meat, eggs and vegetables, with usually one fruit per day and often a cheese stick, and a handful of almonds or walnuts. We’ve traded all the various oils for coconut oil, olive oil, and butter. We’re eating at least 2 avocados most days.
Before we started the diet, I was drinking at least 4 cans of real Dr. Pepper per day. I’ve given that up and now have one Dr. Pepper when I really want it . . usually only once or twice per week.
During the entire month, we had a few stumbles but I said in the beginning that if I really wanted something, I was going to have it.
- When the tile guy was here on a Saturday, Vince grilled burgers and we at the buns.
- When the tile guy was here on Sunday, we ordered pizza and ate the whole thing!
- A week ago today we went to our favorite seafood restaurant down in Brady and ate fried catfish, baked potatoes and hush puppies.
- Last night to celebrate the end of our first month, we went to Chick-Fil-A and had fried chicken, fries and a Dr. Pepper.
I don’t feel bad at all about those few not so great food choices.
In the month, I lost 13 pounds and Vince lost 8 pounds. He said last night that he’s lost this much weight before but he’s never felt this good. I can’t say for certain that it’s the gluten for me because I was such a sugar addict before and now I’m eating very little (by comparison) refined sugar but something is working. I feel great. I was afraid getting off the caffeine might cause me to have less energy but I truly believe I have more energy . . scary! I’m usually not in bed til close to midnight and still wake up about 5 a.m. before the alarm goes off.
Both of us have noticed that we seem to be losing inches way more than you would think based on the number of pounds we’ve lost.
The cutting way back on Dr. Peppers caused the bigger loss for me and I’ll be happy if I lose 5 or 6 pounds in February.
Another thing that has been surprising for me is that I haven’t missed the fresh bread, or the sweets. There’s not a whole lot I love more than fresh baked cookies or pies or cinnamon rolls and it’s almost like those thoughts have just been erased from my mind. I truly have not craved bread or sweets. It’s all kinda weird but weird in a good way . . know what I mean?
What I do miss are potatoes. I love potatoes any way you want to serve them. Potatoes are my comfort food. At this point, given a choice between bread, Dr. Pepper, cookies or a baked potato, I’d take a baked potato but I just don’t think about it.
On we go into February and hopefully we’ll keep up the good work.

Wonderful!!!
And yes, I know exactly what you mean.
My doctors secretary told me that if I craved anything it was because I wasn’t eating enough good fats so I added avocado and home made mayo.
Scale doesn’t move much but my pants are getting big and I feel great!

Way to go, great will power (which I lack).

Way to go! You got me back on as well and I am feeling great and down about pounds. Try lettuce for buns on hamburgers or hot dogs. It is crazy how you will feel like you had a bun and didn’t. Let’s keep going!

Way to go! When I stray and eat something with wheat in it, I’ve had some sort of stomach/intestinal distress the following day (it has varied)…. did you experience that? I don’t have that reaction if I eat rice (which I still avoid, but if I have to choose, I choose to eat rice over wheat) Also, how often do you buy avocados in order to consistently eat that many? I always have trouble buying very many and eating them all at their peak.

Good for you!!! I’ve been on the same kind of eating plan for three weeks, lost 6.3 pounds. If I added in some exercise I would see better results. I hate exercise! The worst for me is the sugar cravings. I am keeping satsumas in the house so when the craving is overwhelming I have something to substitute. Keep up the good work, Judy, and keep blogging about it, for it encourages me to keep going too!

Way to go Judy – congrats on your success!

Way to go – can you do sweet potatos? I am inspired by you…. I will keep working at eating healthier….

Great job! After getting on the scale this AM myself, I really need to get on the wagon but I have to find my willpower!
Linda says
Good job, both of you! It is true that when you eat good food, you feel so much better.

Judy, that’s great!!! I’ve also changed my ways pretty drastically, and am down 17.4 since the end of October (but really the end of November, since I didn’t do anything to change my diet most of November). I cook a lot of Paleo, but I need to be able to eat beans & just the occasional bread. Mostly, I don’t miss bread at all (who knew!). I love paleo recipes for their vast different/variety of recipes. Seems like they have such different and exciting ideas of how to cook great tasting veggies, and I love that!
We’re also making the change to coconut oil, and I made Ghee last weekend. Delish!
Great job on the weight loss & cheers to a successful February, too!
🙂

Sounds like you’re both doing great on your new diet. Trying to lose weight is always hard, but if you truly enjoy the food you can eat and still not feel tired, it’s more than half the battle. Having both members of the household following the same plan doesn’t hurt either. Keep up the good work.

Good job with eating well.
I can give up most things, but home made cookie are my weakness.
If you crave potatoes, have some sweet potatoes. Make baked fries using a touch of oil and some spices you like.

I have to do some sort of dietary change to bring down the blood sugar levels. Did take only a brief glance at this diet, but will go back and look more closely. Did try their 2 ingredient pancake, one banana and 2 eggs blended together and cooked, not bad. But I do have to introduce more beans and legumes into my eating (YUCK) Congratulations on your and Vince’s weight loss.

That is sooooo awesome! Keep up the great work.
