Usually on weekends we have a late breakfast . . around 9 a.m., and then skip lunch and have an early dinner . . around 3:00 p.m. but this morning, apparently the man of the house was starving. He was up to check for deer outside and then decided to have a bowl of cereal so I just skipped breakfast and for lunch we had tuna salad in an avocado half, with celery .. some with almond butter, tomatoes and sugar snap peas.
How healthy does that look? And delicious! Those little purple tomatoes are so delicious.
Then for dinner, we had steak and broccoli.
Fit for a caveman , .
Earlier in the afternoon Vince had wanted a snack. I explained to him that this is kinda like the “caveman diet”. If it was around for the cavemen to eat .. we could eat it. Oreos . . no! Blackberries . . yes! Almond Joy . . no! Pumpkin seeds . . yes! So he grabbed the bone from his steak and said “Is this what a caveman would have done?” I’ll bet a caveman would have been real happy with that T-Bone steak! Looks like my caveman enjoyed it immensely.

There he goes again, posing SPECIFICALLY for a blog post. Man, he has really sunk low!! HA But ya know, he DOES kinda look like a caveman. LOL

I know y’all are ‘dieting’ or following a specific diet, but oh my, that just looks like too much white space on those plates – that alone makes me hungry. Maybe smaller plates for awhile? Is the amount on the plates what is actually all that is eaten or do you get a little more?
JudyL says
It was actually more than enough. I didn’t eat all my meat. The amount of space on the plate doesn’t bother me at all. Vince had a T-Bone so his plate was much more covered than was mine.

Too funny – I did think “at least she could get some big tomatoes – to fill up the space – that’s my diet trick – a little meat, some green veggie, and a BIG slice of tomato – and the plate looks full! You guys are doing great…
JudyL says
The way the tomatoes taste this time of year, I think I’ll pass. When you think about the lunch plate, if I took the tuna salad off the avocado and put it on the plate, that would fill the plate. For dinner, I wasn’t even able to finish my meat. I think the idea of needing a full plate of food is what got us but we’re changing our ways.
Diane in CA says
I’m with Lee, that plate looks empty.. I think this calls for some serious plate shopping.. maybe rectangular ones so WE won’t be hungry.
JudyL says
I’m surprised at how many of you think that . . don’t you know how little “looks” matter to me? Even with my new cabinets, I still don’t have room to spare so buying plates just to make my food look like more isn’t happening. 🙂

I’m following (mostly) Paleo eating. For me, the bone is about the best part of a steak. I love getting the crispy bits off it!

I’m with you Judy, and my meals are almost the same as yours are. I am feeling stuffed with very little to eat following this eating plan. Tonight I piled cabbage on my plate along with two thin chicken strips and some red pepper strips. I couldn’t even eat half of the cabbage. The empty space on the plate to me looks like weight we are losing and health we are gaining!!

I’m very happy to see you posting about your food. I’ve been eating ‘caveman’ for quite some time now. I’m 70 and all my blood work is normal. I’m convinced that diet is why I’m so healthy. My doctor and chiropractor both agree it is the way to eat.
Makes no difference to me what size plate I use or how little food on it, I only eat till I’m full.
I don’t crave a lot of food when I eat this way.

Vince is such a trooper, allowing you to blog about him. LOL Actually, those meals look very appetizing to me. I am trying to eat the same way. I hope it works for all of us!

Judy, I am also trying to diet. No set plan, but no wheat. No bread. Nothing white. I am diabetic and love my fruit but I am careful with that. Veggies I am good with. We went to friends for dinner and to watch the 49er game (we won!!!). I had a glass of wine during the game and skipped the appetizers. They had purchased PRIME rib eyes which we split. YUMMO! Tasted like beef should taste. We each split a steak, they all had huge, loaded baked potatoes. I had steak and a good serving of salad with a vinagarette dressing. I also had another glass of wine with dinner which I usually do not do. Totally satisfied. And, baked potatoes are one of my all time favorites. None tonight.
Keep it going. I am going to do the same and shave a few pounds. It gets harder as we get older.
You guys are doing great!

We are prone to snacking in our house… but if I plan ahead it is usually healthy. I love pre-made salads (with no dressing). Google salad in a mason jar and you get the idea, but we have room in the fridge so I usually just put it on a plate. I keep containers of sliced veggies (my son loves yellow peppers) and we buy tons of fruit. For fruit we eat what is in season so right now it is little oranges, pears and apples, plus the every present bananas for yogurt smoothies. We buy hard black bread and have a meat slicer so we cut it VERY THIN for our bread – seriously I think a regular piece of bread is 2-3X thicker than what we cut – I could not imagine eating a sandwich with thick bread! I used to drink ALOT of tea, but I always put sugar in it so now I mostly drink water. If you know what is a standard portion size looks like, I don’t think plate size matters. It is always fun to read about what you guys are eating – at least you are always up for something new! Cheers! Evelyn

That’s about how my plate looks for meals too. I don’t care about the “white space.” As long as the food is good and I feel full, who cares weather the plate was full? I’m with you Judy, full plates are what got us where we’re at in the first place. I’ll take a smaller portion of GREAT food over a big portion of just OK any day and be happy about it.

I’m not a white-space carer, either. I eat similarly to you, although right now I’m a little off plan. My usual “meal template” is 1-2 palm-sized servings of meat, at least a tablespoon of fat (olive oil, butter, sometimes I’m crazy and even cook my eggs in the leftover bacon grease!), and as many veggies as I want. Fruit at least once a day.
I’ve eaten a 2 qt pyrex bowl full of salad with a hunk of roast beef on top and shocked several people, plus I had fruit salad on the side! As long as you’re eating more veggies than the rest, you should be fine. And don’t skimp on the fat (although that avocado plus whatever you used in the tuna salad is perfect!) – I can eat the same amount of food without the fat and be starving an hour or two later. It’s kind of annoying, actually.

Hope he didn’t crack his teeth! I just bought some almond butter today. I haven’t had it in years. Just love it!
