When I begin feeling a bit sad about the old countertops being ripped out, I look at this spot.
This is one of the worst spots. It’s right by the stove. When I’m canning, I spread a towel on the countertop and as I take the jars out of the canner, I place them on the towel. They are so wobbly and I’m afraid one is going to fall and break because of the uneven edges.
The kitchen is clean . . as clean as it ever gets! The tile tops are petty but they just aren’t functional — as much canning and bread making as I do, I really need solid surface tops. Yes, no matter how much I know I’m doing the right thing, I still have a problem ripping out these countertops and it is bothering me.
You know I don’t like the sink but the new one is going to be almost just like it. This sink was never caulked and and any liquid on the countertop would run down the valleys of the grout, go under the sink and drip into the cabinet below. The new sink will be undermount so at least that shouldn’t happen.
This time tomorrow, it will all be gone. I’m hoping they get at least some of the granite installed tomorrow so I can get back in the kitchen but it all depends on how much trouble they have ripping off the tile tops and backsplash.
The new backsplashes will probably not be installed til mid-January. I haven’t even decided for sure what I’m doing with the backsplashes yet.
Wish me luck . . it’s going to be noisy in here tomorrow and it’s so soggy outside that I’m sure lots of mud will be tracked in . . but I will have new countertops! 🙂

HEY!! I had to go without ANY countertops (AND sink and cooktop) for over a week!! The granite guys needed the old top off in order to make the templates. But I think you WILL LOVE the granite and never miss the tile. I still don’t have my backsplash either. Bought it and when my handy dude picked it up, it was all broken!! When he went back to store, the entire pallet was broken save for about 10 pieces. So I’m back to square one in that dept.

You’ll love it despite the mess. I had no countertops for several weeks. Cardboard on top of the dishwasher didn’t keep it from tipping when the door was down!! Good Luck

Judy, so happy you are getting your solid surface countertops. So love to read how you and Vince are making Yellow Jacket Ranch so liveable and lovable for the two of you.

It is always a little hard to get rid of the old, but I bet you will love your “new” kitchen. I replaced my sink, countertops and backsplash a couple of years ago and I am so glad I did. It made my kitchen new.

After reading your comments on the countertop, when my DH asked if I wanted tile on the counters when we redo the kitchen I gave him a resounding “NO”. I’m with you – I need smooth, one piece counters.

Speaking of backsplash … we didn’t like any of the tile options we were offered, and the kitchen guy said we couldn’t do more of the granite. We saw what looked like pounded bronze sheeting in one house – they told us to go to Home Depot. Turned out to be plastic! Not good in a kitchen, especially behind a gas stove. But at Home Depot we found tiny (1″ square) glass tile. They come all connected on a backing, making a 12″x12″ square which the tile guy grouted. With our under cabinet lighting, it is perfect! Just a thought …

*Sorry … copper, not bronze. Need more coffee ;D

So excited for you Judy! I know what a big difference new counters will make for you. I can’t imagine how hard it was to keep the tile, grout and all clean. I love granite and I love the undermount sink. So easy to wipe right into the sink. If you set something out to thaw from the freezer it will thaw a lot faster on the granite also if you set something warm on it, it will cool faster (like a cup of coffee).
