Denise came up with the idea for “Knitting the Stash – 2014“. I asked her if it was ok if I joined her and copied her cute little sidebar button.
2014 is definitely going to be a year for using the yarn stash. Stop laughing and just listen to me! I’m feeling like 2014 is the year I can do it. For those who didn’t know me 5 or 6 years ago, I bought fabric just like I’ve been buying yarn and I got control of that out of control habit and now I hardly buy fabric and work almost completely out of the stash. I can do that with yarn too.
Every time I write a blog post about goals or resolutions, many of you write and tell me that you don’t do either. I love planning and setting goals and making resolutions. Obviously, I don’t stay on track as often as I wish but I figure having a goal is . . just a goal . . something to work towards achieving. If I fall off the wagon, at least I tried. It never bothers me when I miss the mark, so long as I was honest with myself when I set the goal and I feel I gave it my best shot.
The yarn buying cannot continue at the same frenzied pace. I will be out of room and I’m afraid I already have more yarn than I’ll ever use.
Almost everything Denise said in her post is what I’m thinking. I’m not saying that it’s a no buy year but it’s a “smart buy year”. Here’s what I’m thinking about when it will be ok to buy yarn in 2014:
- The Loopy Ewe Quarterly Challenges
- Camp Loopy
- Black Friday Sale at Eat, Sleep, Knit
That’s it! Pretty limiting, huh? I’m not going to beat myself up if I end up buying more yarn but I’m going to try my best. I will continue to do the yarn reports on Friday but I will keep a running total of yardage used and yardage added on my left sidebar.

I am not saying a thing about buying yarn!!! I like the idea of setting goals also. I sometimes make it and sometimes not, but I agree it just feels good to do some planning and then make an attempt to reach it.:)
So I did want to tell you that I introduced your Get It Done Challenge at my guild. I stressed that you just needed to set small doable goals. People were enthusiastic about it!! I had pretty good participation and lots of gals got a lot of small and on the back burner, projects done. So thanks for the idea, it worked great!!

This should be in-ter-es-ting!!! lol Wish you all the best. You did get the fabric under control!!! I stopped when I turned 70 this year and had to figure out how much I could reasonably finish in my lifetime. Wurn’t a purty picture!!!

I definitely need to do this as well!

You can do whatever you set your mind to! When I read this post I thought 2 things – 1) I want to see what came in the ESK boxes from yesterday and 2) I’d LOVE to see your yarn stash.
An acquaintance made a pledge to knit from stash a few years ago. She put yarn and a pattern into 12 paper bags. At the beginning of the month, she picked a bag and knit that project. I thought it was a fun spin on being on a Stashdown!

Sounds like fun! I`m probably not going to participate just because my yarn buying habit hasn`t taken over my life yet 🙂
Is there going to be a quilting “UFO” project next year? And did I miss the December Get it Done post, or did you forget?
Cindy Weber says
hmmmmm, sounds like those three “exclusions” are the same excuses you used this year to buy tons of yarn. . . . . . . . . . .

I’m sorry. I’m laughing. I’ve read your blog too long and I know how this will turn out next year. LOL!

I love the sidebar Quilting the Stash and Knitting the Stash and want to join in. I would like to add something to my sidebar to keep a running tally. Could someone give me a few suggestions on how to add something like that?

I’m in! I need to do yarn as well as fabric stash. It should be an interesting year! Maybe I should buy more of each now to boost my stash so next year will be less buying??? No – I don’t think so!

After totaling up my Black Friday acquisitions and keeping track of my yarn stash since August, I’m definitely IN on Knit the Stash 2014. I have the same exclusions as you except I’m adding in MadMay. There may be some hiccups but we can definitely do better.
