I love A & W Root Beer. It’s funny because I’m just a Dr. Pepper addict but I can’t really tell the difference in Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb. I truly cannot tell them apart. Mostly I drink Dr. Pepper because I drink the ones with real sugar instead of corn syrup and I’m not even sure Mr. Pibb has that version. So, I cannot tell the difference in Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb but it seems every single brand of root beer tastes different and there are only a couple that I like but I only love A & W brand.
Several years ago we decided we would make our own root beer and we did for a while but then we stopped. What we made was ok but it didn’t compare to A & W brand. Lately I’ve been reading more about making root beer and how to improve on what we were making. We had used plain kitchen yeast but I decided we needed to try different yeast so I ordered champagne yeast, ale yeast and wine yeast, all of which are used in various recipes for root beer . . one at a time . . not combined.
Today Vince was out doing his bargain hunting . . without me to hurry him along and he came across these root beer kits.
Amazon has it for $17.19. I don’t know if you can see it but Vince got it for $2.99. He bought . . several! 🙂
I believe we’ll be making lots of root beer!

When my hubby wanted to get into beer making, he promised me he would make me a batch of rootbeer – and even gave me a bottle of the extract in my Christmas stocking. Guess what we haven’t made yet (7+ batches of real beer later…)

Years ago on Good Eats, Alton Brown made ginger ale. I’ve always wanted to try that. I think the recipe is on his web site. Hope your root beer turns out yummy!

Thank you for posting this! I went to the foodnetwork site and printed the recipe. I made a bottle this week, and I really like it! Nobody else does, but that’s fine! More for me! LOL!
Since ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory, it helps with my knee pain and that’s a huge plus for me! Thanks again!

One of the things I love when visiting the Amish area around Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is to stop at one of the Amish stands and buy homemade root beer. It is really great-tasting! (And beats A & W….which I love….by a mile!) I wish I could find such a good buy on those kits as Vince did.

Yum! I LOVE root beer! I’ve never made it (guess I won’t learn any younger, so I might as well start now!)
I have made homemade gingerale though – by several recipes – although my favorite happens to be in Carla Emery’s Old Fashioned Recipe book. and it makes a LOT!
I’ve also taught a class in homemade ginger ale – and goofed (of course!) – and ended with a nice almost champagne-ish beverage that everyone liked A LOT!
(I also made homemade gingerale, sent it with my dd to public school – and didn’t think of it as real ALE or MEAD – which it was – and couldn’t figure out why she and I were so silly while we were slurping up the “soda-pop” Principal of her school thought it was quite nice as well. LOL I was mortified when it finally dawned on me that it was slightly alcoholic!)

I am a HUGE Dr. Pepper and root beer fan. Yes, A&W is good but if you can get your hands on Virgil’s Root Beer (sometimes in the health food area of the supermarket) you’ll be in for a real taste bud treat! I also love a good “microbrewed” root beer and always ask for it whenever we stop at a brewery. It’s still early morning and this has made me think of having a Dr. Pepper instead of tea for breakfast!! LOL

Young son decided to give it a try last year, with a recipe and yeast from a brew shop. Just a word of warning, measure carefully. He added too much yeast and they exploded in the glass bottles. It was like 4th of July with glass everywhere. Nothing worse than scraping rootbeer off the ceiling while dodging broken glass all over the place. It won’t be happening in my house again anytime soon! LOL… (first I really could laugh over it) 🙂

Oh, cool. How can you NOT take up an offer like that when you like making home-made root beer?! Actually, I never even realized that root beer making was something that could be done at home. Neat!
