Yesterday the Dutch Ovens arrived.
There’s an 8 quart on bottom and a 4 quart on top. I can hardly wait til the weekend and hopefully we’ll have time and the weather will be good and we can cook in them.
I also got this cake pan. It’s heavy . . almost as heavy as cast iron.
To bake a cake, or brownies, or rolls, I would put them in the cake pan, then put something between the two pans so the cake pan isn’t sitting directly on the Dutch Oven, then pull the coals on the lid and bake in the cake pan.
Yes, I’m very excited about trying something in the Dutch Ovens. Thank goodness the cast iron is already seasoned and I don’t have to mess with that.

Congrats! I know you’ll enjoy them!
I roasted a chicken in one of mine last night – it doesn’t have legs and I use it in the kitchen often. I hardly ever put it away…it just sits on my stove top because I’ll probably use it again soon!

My Montana cousin cooks with them all the time. I think both times the guys were Elk hunting, Tom did all the meals in the dutch oven. Tom has become quite proficient dutch oven chef!

Wait, you mean the pot called a Dutch oven can actually be used without an oven? I use Le Creuset cast iron pots like yours in my oven for stews and such, and actually I remember that Madeline Kamman prefers a pot with a concave lid like yours for making boef bourgignon. I did not know you could use that kind of pot for camping — my husband just brings flimsy tin pans for heating soup on a hot plate for camping. Love my Chicago Metallic cake pans and bread pans, though. Happy cooking and baking, and please share more about how you manage to make “real” food out in the wilderness!

When I’ve done cakes or bread, I used an upside-down pie pan between the cake pan and the bottom of the dutch oven. I love mine!

Around here, they recommend using an old horse shoe! 🙂

During my Girl Scout days one of our favorite desserts was spice cake made in the Dutch oven over coals. Applesauce in the bottom, prepared cake mix on top…no extra pan. Trickiest part was getting a slow enough pile of coals and patience. Mmmmm, good memories, too!

When I bake pies or cakes in my Dutch Oven (with coals), I use several canning jar rings under the pie plate or cake pan. I know you have some of those!!!

And do you have the “something” to put in between the cake pan and the Dutch oven? They look so shiny and new right now!

One summer we were visiting a friend who was a Ranger at Glacier. One evening he was giving one of the talks posing as a mule skinner. Anyway, he cooked cornbread in a oven like you just got. The oven was put in a hole in the ground, and coals were put on the lid. Then it was covered with dirt. By the time he got through with the program, the cornbread was done and it was wonderful!. (Another good memory) Seeing yours, reminded me of that cornbread.

I have a ton of cast iron pots and pans and I love them! Some are so old they came from my grandma! The one thing I didn’t have is one that was tall enough to cook chili in so hubby went and got me one that has the ceramic on the outside. ..the chili was awesome! Have fun playing with your new toys.
