Don’t tell him I said so, but Chad is kinda weird! First, he loves to cook. Second, he loves to cook things that I’ve never even heard of before. Third, he loves recipes that take hours and hours to make. Fourth, he loves to make recipes that call for ingredients most folks don’t use and most grocery stores don’t carry.
While we were shopping in Joplin, he told me he needed something . . I can almost think of the name of it but it’s escaping me. I said “There’s a jar of that in my pantry that I think you bought when we lived in MO.” Then he named something else he needed and yes, there’s a jar of that in my pantry too. I guess I’ll start a new box of things to bring to Chad next trip.
Because we’re both somewhat of bargain shoppers, we buy large containers and share. I take him normal things . . like cumin and bay leaves. He gives me weird stuff . . things he’s so proud to have and share . . things I’m not sure I’ll ever use!
This trip, he gave me Fenugreek! I’ll use it but to tell you the truth . . it doesn’t smell like something I’m going to like. Maybe the fact that I opened it, smelled it and it must have gone up my nose because I can’t stop smelling it.
My research shows that it’s good for treating conditions such as loss of appetite. Maybe I’ve been eating lots of it and didn’t know it! 🙂 No appetite problems around here.
Chad said “It seems like every recipe I see calls for Fenugreek!” Really? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a recipe that required Fenugreek but I will search for one or two and try them and see what I think.
The best thing about this container . . it has a label handwritten by Chad. I will put this in the front of my spice cabinet and smile every time I open the cabinet and see it.
A quick search for recipes using Fenugreek and I found Chicken Curry with Okra. My okra has slowed production enough that I’m not getting enough to put up but am still getting enough to use in meals so I’ll try this recipe.

Fenugreek is used a lot in Indian cooking. Good stuff.

Yep, I think almost all the weird spices Chad buys are for Indian dishes.
Helen Koenig1 says
Chad is like my son who LOVES Indian dishes! And who also has Fenugreek!
Like Chad, Nathan also loves to cook – and can happily spend hours creating some dish I never heard of before – but which invariably tastes great!

Whenever I need to sniff anything mysterious, I wave my hand over it and smell the waft instead of sniffing it directly. I learned this from working in the lab, but I use it still for things that might smell strong or bother my allergies.
JudyL says
I’ll remember that next time. Thanks!
Amber says
I’ve heard breastfeeding moms use it to increase their milk supply.
Peggy says
Fenugreek is helpful in breast milk production.
Linda in NE says
I think I read somewhere that fenugreek can be used to treat migraines. As for cooking with it….never have.
Connie says
Someone suggested I drink fenugreek tea to help my cough . Nastiest stuff ever. I just couldn’t handle it

I can’t remember ever seeing a recipe that called for Fenegreek, although I have heard of it. Never saw it in the spice section, but then I’ve never looked for it. When you use it, let us know how it is. I don’t have a sense of smell, so that part wouldn’t bother me, but if it’s really a bad one the neighbors might complain.
Linda Steller says
Aw. That handwritten label is precious.
