Vince and I were sitting here at lunch and we were talking about our preparedness efforts. Fairly often we go over our list of supplies and yes, I know most of you think we’re nuts but we were talking and had this conversation:
Me: We’re ok on food. I keep up with that.
Vince: We’re ok on water with the solar well.
Me: I keep plenty of heirloom seeds so we could grow the garden but we might need to stock up a bit more on some of the things I use – fish emulsion, Sevin dust occasionally.
Vince: I’ve been using a lot of hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic ointments with all the cuts and scrapes I get so I should buy more of that.
Me: What concerns me is .. what would you do if we had no power for an extended period. I can knit or do handwork. But you . . there’s only so much time you can spend in the recliner!
Vince: I’d probably get on Match.com . . or something like that!
Match.com? Really?
On second thought . . all that food I have stashed away . . that’s just for me. What are you, Vince, planning on doing if ever there’s a food shortage? 🙂

Why is it our hubby’s like to get us going! By the way, without power, how would he get on Match.com! My husband is like Vince! Comes out with the darnedest things ~ so I just say what you prob did! All the food I made~ mine! Mischievous he is lol!

I must admit, I’ve purchased a treadle machine recently. My eyes are not as good as they used to be and so handwork gets ditched if I had to do it by candlelight. Knitting and crocheting in Texas when there is no air conditioning, is icky for me because the yarn gets soggy. So, I’m learning to treadle. 🙂

I am with you in being prepared! We also live out in middle of nowhere. We once had a power outage for 5 days. People couldn’t buy food or water because the mom and pop store was closed. the registers needed power, no refrigeration for the coolers, etc. A couple of years ago, we had a very bad winter, -30 degrees. A lot of people were unable to cook or keep warm because they only had propane stoves and heaters. The propane company had run out and was unable to get delivery for over a week. I think it was in the news. We have an emergency generator, a large supply of emergency canned food and a wood burning stove. . . and extra batteries that are always rotated. We would not have internet, phone, or television, but we have a battery for our dvd player for him and I always have my quilting, cross stitching and other non-electric crafts. I even have a treadle sewing machine!

LOL You are too much Vince! Gotta love them…

Back in 2004, I found a hand crank sewing machine, and made a joke that if a hurricane came, I could still sew. Hurricane Ivan came through couple months later, we were without power for 5 days. Too busy cleaning up the yard and business, never had time to sew.

I am not as prepared as I have been in the past, but I think we could survive for a while. We always keep water for drinking and extra food. I still have the treadle machine I used when I first started to sew.

OMG, I’ve missed you guys and your menagerie! I’ve been away and internetless for the last week. I came home to 50+ blog entries, and felt like I’d died and gone to heaven! I’m telling you right now, and this is the God’s honest truth, settling down to an hourlong read of Judy posts, with a bowl of popcorn and a glass of diet Coke (sorry, can’t seem to find Dr. Pepper up here in NH– and I’m on a diet, so that meant no ice cream!) is better than any novel ANY day! Just the right mix of poignant, crafty, homestead building and hysterical! I would buy a memoir by you in a heartbeat! Please, don’t ever stop blogging. It would be way up on my list of saddest days ever!

You two crack me up! Please, like the others allready said, please please please keep this blog going!
We hardly have any electricity problems, luckily. The joys of living in a densely populated country!!! LOL!

Is vince slipping. He could have said that there was enough yarn for you both. There may be lessons in his future.

I have to restock quite a bit on some (not all) of the supplies. Have been without power here in MA twice for extended periods of time – 2 weeks in Westfield, and I am thinking a lot longer than that after the tornadoes touched down in Sturbridge – and that tore up a lot of trees – right across the power lines!
Have had other times I’ve been without power – although the BEST time was when I lived on the farm and had all my winter supply of food and the animals supply of food packed away – and we had wood heat. LOVED that! Dd still remembers that time – no school, tobogganing with mom every day, soup for lunch and stew for dinner.

We are usually not without power for great lengths of time. We do have a pellet stove though which works and also a propane heater in case the power is out. Food is always just a jar away too. What amazes me is so many people around here go to the store almost every day and have no “pantry” to eat out of. Stop and pick up food for supper every day. I could probably survive for a year if I had to.

That made me smile. I needed to smile. How’s Vince going to get on Match.com with no electricity? Ride the bike to charge his computer battery?

Thin ice, Vince. 😉

Looks like you married a jokester too !LOL

Your stories of Vince crack me up. I live in the UK where we mostly have shops, supplies etc much closer to hand. We also don’t have the extremes of weather that you have in the USA but I love reading your blog

LOL – tell him the pickin’s are mighty slim. I finally closed down my account. I’d much rather be alone than hooked up with any of those guys. Good grief. They’re either still living with mamma or are ready to jump in the car and come and marry me tomorrow. Last guy I told him I felt like I had a freight train bearing down on me and couldn’t get off the tracks soon enough! How’s Vince going to get on line if he doesn’t have any power? ;D
Mel Meister says
He really razzes you, doesn’t he? LOL!
