Remember when we were so desperately searching for jujube trees last spring and a blog reader located some guy in California who sell them? He only had one Honey Jar variety and that’s the one we were so desperately looking for. He sent it bare root, we planted it and babied it and it now has several jujubes on it.
It was hard to get a good picture . . it’s so windy here always and the tree was blowing and the pictures were a bit blurry but do you see the little green thing that looks about like an olive? That’s a jujube. It won’t get much bigger than that.
If you click on this link, you will see an image of what several varieties of jujube look like. Our is the Honey Jar. We will also get a Li and a Sugar Cane next spring. There’s a local nursery that should have those next year.
We’re so excited to have fruit the first year. It may fall off and not actually get ripe but so far, it’s looking good. They’re supposed to be fairly bug resistant and so far, the grasshoppers have not been too rough on this little shrub, and they’re supposed to be drought resistant . . which is definitely a good thing here.

Are you going to make jelly with them? I have a jujube bush(tree) and wondered what I could do with them besides let the birds eat them. Are they ripe when they turn dark reddish brown?

Never had a jujube fruit, too cold here I guess. Never seen them in stores either. Looks like some nasty spines on those branches. Be careful picking them.
Hugs!!!!

I hope your jujubes stay on the tree, ripen and are delicious!

It’s a beautiful bush, and I hope you get a good harvest. I have never heard of them, but the web site you posted looked like they have beautiful fruit. If they are bug resistant they may be the one thing you have the grasshoppers leave alone.

Judy, I love reading your blog. I live a little further south in Texas and am intrigued. Do you have trouble with deer? Have they eaten the jujube foliage or fruit? Between armadillos digging up my flower beds and deer and grasshoppers, it’s tough to get anything to thrive. Have the deer bothered yours?

I have a hint for you – when photographing things that move too much to get a clear photo put the camera on sports mode (if you have one on your camera) and it will stop the action so you get a sharp photo.
