You wouldn’t believe how hard it was for me to figure out which yarn to buy for the Camp Loopy Project #2. Don’t laugh but I think I spent about 10 hours trying to figure it out. I was on the computer til late last night and almost all morning today.
Deciding on Hitchhiker was pretty easy. That only took an hour or so.
Then it was time to decide on yarn. I went through about 80 pages of projects on Ravelry to see how different yarns looked made up using this pattern. Some yarns made up too “tweedy”. Some were too “stripey”. Some were too solid and appeared flat. Some . . well, I’m not going to say they were ugly but they surely didn’t make me smile.
There are 431 pages of projects for Hitchhiker on Ravelry . . that’s 20 per page! I would skim down the page and when I saw one I loved, I’d check out the yarn. So many were Wollmeise and that’s not available right now. Quite a few of them that caught my eye were made using Crazy Zauberball but for the longest time, I couldn’t find that on The Loopy Ewe’s website.
Even though when I found one that I loved, I couldn’t find the same yarn at TLE but I would try to figure out the color sequence that created the shading/striping that I liked.
By mid-morning, I had a cart full of possibilities.
I was so frustrated with going through all of the projects and then going back to TLE’s web page, I thought . . I’ll just get them all but you have to designate which one you want so you can get the 20% camp discount. Besides, had I gotten them all, this is what I would have spent!
Summer camp surely is expensive these days, isn’t it?
Since I’ve pretty much not accomplished a single thing today yet, why don’t we waste some of your time. Look at those five possibilities in my cart, look at the Hitchhiker pattern and tell me . .
(1) Which yarn do you think I chose?
(2) Why do you think I chose that one?
(3) Which one of those five would you have chosen?
There’s no right or wrong answer . . except I did choose one of those yarns. I’m just wondering what you would have chosen.
Roberta says
Topas is my choice because it’s soft and would all blend together when knitted up with subtle variations. It’s my kind of yarn. 😉 Understated but not boring.
Hugs!!!!
Marion Morgan says
Guess I agree with Topas. I am influenced by color and it would go with so many other colors and not clash. Will look forward to finished product.
Joanie says
I know I will not be any help but do love picking out yarn. I like the spats because it would go with a lot of different clothes you might have. I also like the poseidon because I like the colors. That’s just me.
Becky M says
I think you chose poseidon. It looks like something you would choose, pretty blue, pretty green.. I would choose topaz for myself.
Donna F says
You are such a bad influence on me. I’m trying to be good and not spend any money on yarn or fabric this month and you’re showing me all these pretties! I get started and cannot stop. Thanks for the temptations.
Kate says
Mountain tango, of course!
Gwen M says
Hi Judy, My guess is Spectrum because it’s colorful
and the color distribution will work well with the Hitchhiker pattern. I love the Poseidon as well – actually all your choices are lovely. I would have chosen Spectrum for myself.
Diana in RR, TX says
For me it would have been a toss up between poseidon and mountain tango.. My guess for you-probably the topaz. Very soft, go with just about anything.
Judy D in WA says
I’m guessing you chose Mountain Tango.. I really like that one and Topaz. I’m guessing you chose that one because it’s pretty. 🙂
susan rizzi says
I think you would have chosen either Posedon or Mountain Tango because they both look like colors that you have used in the past. I probalby would buy Topaz for myself but since I don’t knit I have no idea how it would look in a shawl. Why don’t you buy that one so I can see the finished project and decide if I like it! HA HA
Peg says
I am just spending some time learning how to crochet but I was immediately drawn to Topaz. It has such a soft look.
Sharon in Michigan says
I think you chose poseidon, maybe becuase you like greens and blues due to your love of nature???? I would chose spectrum for myself as I love reds and oranges, etc.
Michelle says
I’m thinking Mountain Tango because it’s got just enough variation to be interesting.
Frieda Z says
I think you chose poseidon because it looks like your colors and would be pretty knit up in this pattern
pdudgeon says
i think you chose poseidon because you sem to knit a lot of blue and green socks. I would have chosen spectrum because it’s got everything.
Karen from Oz says
I love Poseidon, but I think you would choose Mountain Tango, just cause its green. 🙂
Denise ~ justquiltin says
Would it be a bad thing if I had all but the bottom one in your photos in my stash???
AngieG9 says
I like the mountain tango, so I’m hoping that’s the one you chose. You sound a lot like me though in wanting to order them all–until you get to the bottom line. That’s usually when I have to clean out my cart, weeping every time I hit “delete”. I love the pattern, can’t wait to see the picture of the finished project.
Sue Lord says
My guess is mountain tango. The colors look like something you would choose.. You are probably using something that we would never guess!
Deb Praus says
I think you chose Poseidon, enough umph without pooling or striping!. I would have chosen Spectrum, just the kind of gal I am! lol They are all beautiful.
Darling Jill Quilts says
I think the Poseidon. That is really pretty!
Katie says
I’m going to guess Topaz. It looks like it would knit up wonderfully as a Hitchhiker. I actually have a couple skeins of Spats set aside for this very pattern. Just haven’t knit them up yet.
Paula says
I think you chose Mountain Tango and that is the one I would have chosen.

Peggy in CA says
I think you chose Spectrum. It seems like it would fit with your bright color sense. I would choose Topaz. I’m kind of a subdues yarn chooser. I have this pattern and two yarns with which to do it. I got them a couple of years ago, and it’s still on my to do list.. In fact, I started to organize my yarn a few days ago and got overwhelmed by my to do list.
Peggy in CA says
That should be “subdued”.
Susan says
I think you chose Spectrum because, when I look at your yarn projects, you seem to choose a lot of bright, happy colors, and not so many subtle ones. I didn’t go back and check, so my memory could be wrong, but that’s the impression I have of your socks, at least. I would have chosen Poseidon, because it’s just such a pretty combination.
danielle says
I would go with the Poseidon one!
I decided to do the pinwheel baby blanket (a favorite pattern of mine) in blues for a co-worker. I picked 3 blues, but told the elves that since they can see the colors in real life – to make substitutions if necessary! Will be interesting to see what I get! Got a package today with my sleepshirt (AKA camp shirt) and water bottle today! why cant I get these orders coordinated!!!
Amy (Waunaknit) says
After I placed my order, I went back to check other possibilities in case mine didn’t match (since it was the last 2 skeins left). Poseidon was on my short list. Spectrum looks like it could be a fun colorway though.
Becky says
I think you picked Mountain Tango. I would have picked Posidon.
I found out I could pick my yarn and project last night from Denise’s Blog, who found out from your blog. I spent about an hour before deciding on “Guernsey Wrap”. Took me about 20 minutes to pick the yarn. I don’t remember what I picked, but I’ll have it by Saturday.
KatieQ says
I would choose Poseidon. It would look like you just emerged from the sea.
sandie says
I don’t want to guess which one you chose, but I guarantee I would have chosen Mountain Tango…Why? Because it is Bearfoot by Mountain colors, and is one of my favorite yarns. So soft, and the colors are gorgeous
Marilyn Smith says
Poseidon would be my choice for you. I wear alot of black and that last one would interest me as well. But, that blue/green will go with anything – love those colors. I don’t see any purple in there? But, I live in the So CA desert and don’t have much of a need for anything like that…just maybe a few weeks during the winter (when we get one).
Marge Jansonius says
I would choose Poseidon, it has a subtle color to give it a boost. Will be interesting to see what you chose.
Marge
Dorothy Schreyer says
I think you chose Posiden, it would have dimenson, but not stripes and will go with a lot of things. (I like Topaz too!)
Beth says
I think you chose Poseidon.
Char Scott says
My guess would be Posiden, it is a beautiful blue and green
EagleKnits says
Hmm… you didn’t like the ones that were too stripey, too tweedy, or too solid… so I’m guessing you chose Spats. It looks like it has long color runs that will help avoid those problems. For myself, I would have chosen Poseidon; love the green and blue together!
Linda Steller says
Okay. I haven’t looked at what you chose yet, but I would have chosen Poseiden. I generally choose darker things. Plus, knowing that you liked it and added it to your basket, at least I know you considered it. Can’t wait to see what you got!
Kristin says
Ooo! I just made a hitchhiker this spring! Did you see it on Ravelry? I’m sure you did and thought it was the perfect blend of varigation– not too flat, not too stripey! 😉
I’m not sure if this link will work, but I’ll try:
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/CircusPeanuts/hitchhiker
My yarn was a blend of 90% alpaca 10% silk and was lovely to work with.It is machine spun locally and hand dyed. Their yarns are divine!
Good luck with your scarf!!
Judy S says
Well, I’ve been gone and am dying to know which yarn you chose. Lately I’ve been trying to shop my yarn stash, but it never seems to have the perfect choice. Tee hee!
