We were going to get the new dining room cabinet, and then we weren’t, and then we were, and then we weren’t, and now, we are. We pretty much have to do something since we’ve chopped so many holes in the wall.
This was the room after the electrician worked Saturday. The big hole with the wire hanging out . . I’m not real sure about the purpose of that. Maybe because a new circuit breaker had to be run for these plugs and the under counter lighting?? The two small holes are where the new plug boxes will be.
He came back and worked Monday and this is what it looks like now. Wire in big hole has been put where it needs to be. New plugs have covers. But, there’s a new hole at the bottom. A long hole. Not real sure what that’s there for but I’m sure it makes sense to Chris and Vince.
There’s no way we can match this paint because of the glaze that’s on it so the entire room, including the hallway and foyer, are going to have to be repainted. There should be a law that people have to save their paint colors for the next owner. My little kitchen is a different color but I’m going to paint everything the same color and be done with it. The ceilings all need painting too. This is a job for a professional.
Finally, we got new switches for the fan/light in the extra bedrooms.
Who would have thought a little switch would make me so happy? Before, we had a regular flip type switch. Then you had to pull the chain for the light or fan on the light/fan. If I walked in there at night, I’d turn the switch on and the chain had been pulled so the fan would come on but the light wouldn’t and since the fan is over the bed, I’d break my neck trying to get to the chain for the light and never knew in the dark which chain was for the light and which chain was for the fan. Why do people do that? Seems like we’ve always had two switches on the wall . . one for the light and one for the fan but only in the master bedroom here . . not the other two. We’ve solved that problem.
Will we ever get everything done that we want done? The truth is . . where we’ve lived before, we always knew that we’d be moving some time in the future so we lived with whatever bugged us but here, we’re assuming we’ll be here for the rest of our time so we’re trying to do things the way we want them and . . I guess we just want too many changes! 🙂

Love your fan/light switch! I need some of those in my house. The chains on the fans in my house were all so short I couldn’t reach them, so I had to go out and buy more chain. Fan/light switches would make things easy!

and i say good for you! there’s no earthly reason to have to put up with something that can be changed to make life easier (and safer!) for both of you. Go for it!

Sounds like great improvements… for fans we always used a long chain for the light and short for the fan… but I do love the wall switch.
Don’t know if you do this already… one of the best things my husband did when the kids were small was to put a timer switch on the bathroom fan. Encouraged them to air out the room and/or remove steam from a shower without having to come back and turn the fan off… or leave it running all day long.
My youngest daughter installed one in her bathroom when they remodeled… made me laugh that it was a feature she thought was ‘standard equipment’.
I enjoy watching your improvements!

I am happy someone is getting things done! Can you tell I am a little frustrated with the yes, we are going to remodel the kitchen, the master bath and our bedroom. they will be major jobs of course. Nothing will be getting done now for another few months-family coming early August! So I am loving looking at all your works in progress!

That’s a fancy looking light/fan switch. When we moved in, one of the first things we did was install double light switches (one switch for the lights and one switch for the fans) in all the rooms with ceiling fans. I had enough of the pulling chains (and climbing onto the beds to do it) at our previous house. 😉

Nice switch! I love all those kind of gadgets. In our bathroom, we have a timer switch for the fan that looked pretty cool but that switch of your is making me envious. I need one for our dining room fan/light. It’s over the table and I’m too short to reach the pull chain for the fan. Cool!

Being able to switch the light and the fan off separately at the wall will be great. We solved that problem in our bedroom by putting in a remote control switch on the fan and light. — then bought 2 remotes. One is on the corner of the dresser by the door the other on my nightstand across the room. Now if we can just remember to not flip the wall switch… The rest of the fans are still on pull chains – but not over beds. We solved our problem of which chain is which by attaching pulls. the Fan has a cute fan pull and the light has a little light bulb. we saw them at my SIL’s and came home and found them for every fan in the house!

We were in the same boat for many years – we knew the homes we lived in were only temporary, and some things we just lived with until we moved on. When we started to renovate our retirement home, DH was often angry with me as I insisted on having certain things – I didn’t want to live with these minor inconveniences for the rest of my life! I’m glad I stuck to my ideas, as we’ve been very happy with all the choices, no matter how difficult to install or how expensive.

Love the way it’s all coming together. Do you have your colors picked out yet for when you can paint? I’m not sure I would ever understand the switch without a lot of practice but it sure would solve a lot of problems at night when you have to go in there..

Oy! I hate painting. Touch-ups aren’t too bad, but having to do a big room or two all over is a lot of work. I still have the flip switch and the chains for the fans in my bedrooms. I rigged them so there is a longer chain for the light, so if I have to go groping for the light in the dark, it should be the first chain I run into!

Love the switch. I need those in living room and bedroom. Love your blog.

Judy, I’m with you on the paint thing! When I moved from Texas to Ohio I left paint behind for whomever might buy the house – gallons of paint, carefully labeled as to where it was used. The realtor I’d hired to sell the house had “her people” come in to clean & stage the house for showings, and they threw away all that carefully labeled paint! I was SO upset with her that they did that; I’m sure she thought I was a lunatic. LOL. But the house we live in now has odd-colored walls that I can’t seem to match. The floor plan is VERY open so it’s not like we can paint one room and be done with it … if we start touching up what needs to be touched up, we have to paint the living room, dining room, kitchen and office. I sure wish I knew what the previous resident used on these walls!

That’s a mighty fine light switch. Wish I had a couple like it.
