We have our favorite electrician and he works for a big company in town. When we need an electrician, which seems to be often since everything in our house appears to be on one circuit . . we always call and ask for Chris. Apparently everyone asks for Chris because it takes forever to get him out here.
Chris is a single guy and will often do small jobs through his employer on weekends and we’re happier to have him here on weekends when Vince is home to do what men do. So . . today and tomorrow, Chris is here to work on our electrical needs which include:
- Adding a light in the hallway. There is no light in the hallway by the two extra bedrooms. It’s dark there and to go to the bathroom from either of those bedrooms is kinda dangerous so we’re adding a light in the hallway with a switch by both bedrooms.
- Ceiling fan switches. The two extra bedrooms have the ceiling fan/light on the same switch. You turn one switch and then have to pull the chain to turn the light on or off or the ceiling fan on or off. I want separate switches for the lights and separate switches for the fan so he’s doing that.
- We’re going ahead with the cabinet in the dining room so the electric plugs in there have to be moved up higher on the wall.
- We’re adding a hot tub outside so the wiring all has to be added for that.
- Wiring has to be run to the water storage tank for the pump and whatever that thing is that cuts the pump off if the water in the tank gets too low.
- One of the ceiling fans on the porch is causing the breaking to trip so he has to fix that.
- The electric plugs on the front porch are on the ceiling. That’s so very useful when you’re 5’3″ . . NOT! So he’s moving those plugs down to where I can reach them without dragging a ladder out.
Yep, we’ll keep Chris busy for the next couple of days. We asked him if he knows of a good painter in town and he said he’s a good painter so I think we’re going to get him to paint the living room walls and ceiling before the new cabinet gets installed but the painting will have to happen when he’s not working for the electric company and I think they’re pretty busy right now.
So, just to make sure Chris . . a single guy . . enjoys coming here, I’ve fixed lunch!
It isn’t soupy . . it’s just started cooking. Yum! I can hardly wait to dig into that!
Warm, crusty sourdough bread will be served!
For dessert, we will have Barf Cake . . but for Chris, we will call it Five Flavor Pound Cake.
Here’s an example of judging a book by its cover. Chris first began doing our electric work when we did the sewing room. He has tattoos all over . . all over as much as I can see! When he fist began working here, he was so very quiet. Don’t even think about asking him a question that didn’t yield a simple yes or no. He said very little, most often just shaking his head yes or no and not even saying anything. He kinda scared me. One day I was talking to the guy who was doing the work here and I said “Chris kinda scares me.” Steve told me that Chris was a good kid and one of the best electricians he’d ever met. The more we were around Chris, the more we liked him and now, he’s the only guy we want doing our electrical work. When we call for an electrician, we ask for Chris and if it’s going to be a while before he can get here, we wait for him. And, no matter what he’s doing here, he always get a home cooked meal.
He talks more now. Not a lot . . but more than he did at first. And, he’s quite comical. I’m not sure he means to be but he makes me smile.

Wow! Keep feeding him like that and he’ll never leave. ;D I need to find someone like that here. I still have tube and post wiring in this house and yes, almost everything is on one circuit. I was lucky that, when I chose to turn the attic into a quilting studio, the plug I chose for the longarm happens to be on its very own circuit.

Oh – I forgot to say, I’ll bet he’d love to hear the Barf Cake story!

I laughed at “barf cake.” My friend who makes “throw-up dip” (formal name Fiesta dip) is sitting right across from me. 🙂

Yep, you’re turning into a real country girl! Feeding everyone who wanders past your door is a sign! Happens here all the time. I’m betting Chris loves it when he sees you on his list of calls!

You’re getting a hot tub! Wow! Sure does sound like you found a little piece of Heaven in Texas!

Judy, for a meal like that I think I would learn to be an electrician and move to Texas. And if Chris can do all of that in one weekend he is really a miracle worker. It takes 3 of the maintenance men in my building to change a lightbulb, but probably already know that story. It really does take them 3 days to get up here though, so I decided to change it myself. Climbed the ladder (when I can’t even walk straight), took the cover off the fixture, dropped cover and broke it, took old bulb out, dropped that and broke it, put new bulb in, and have more light now than I ever had before. Got down from ladder, spent 2 hours trying to conquer shaky legs (I’m afraid of heights), then cleaned up broken glass. Finally had to call management and report broken light fixture and refuse to have new fixture installed. I like the extra light. Also banned certain maintenance people from my apartment. Call my son now — he’s my favorite maintenance man even though he works at a different company. HE’s been working on half million dollar farm equipment since he was 4 years old and fixing it right the first time. The head guy here doesn’t even know you have to remove the screws before you can take out a standing pole. Even I know that much.
