It’s hard to find sewing time this time of year but I’ve been trying. Even though I’ve made the Road to Llano top once, I need to make it again to check the instructions so I’m trying to get enough done to be confident with the instructions when they post on June 3. Thankfully, what I’ve done so far has not involved the background fabric but today . . the background fabric gets used and I don’t have a clue which one I should use. I can see strong and weak points to all three. Help please! 🙂
My least favorite of the background options is the ecru. At first, it was my second choice . . before I pulled the pale yellow fabric. I think the ecru washed out the other colors.
My second choice is this pale yellow Krystal. I like it and it’s a very, very close second to the white Dimples.
My first choice, and it’s so close to my second choice is the white. This is a hard decision!
Normally, the pale yellow Krystal would have been my first choice but when I see what the white does in the other Road to Llano quilt, I just keep coming back to white as the background.
I love how the white makes the lavender, purple and green just come to life. Will it be as striking with the colors in the new top or should I go with the pale yellow? Quick . . tell me so I can go sew (as soon as I finish planting sweet potatoes!).
Tina in NJ says
Go with the yellow. And I really don’t like yellow as a rule.
Rosie Davis says
I like what the white does to make the blocks stand out.
shirley bruner says
i think you should use the pale yellow. you have used the white once….and if you use the pale yellow…..then you can truly see how it looks when finished. go for the gusto. hahaha
Dottie N. says
I think I’d go with the pale yellow – nice and “warm”, comforting.
Cathy says
I like the white. It makes the other colours sing.
Vicki W says
I like the pale yellow best. Do you have a really pale purple? It would be nice to see how that might look. The white is a little stark….but then often you can’t get the real feel for something in a photo.
Carol in SW MO says
In just looking at the pictures, I like the pale yellow, but go with what you like best.
Mary Arline Smith says
I prefer the yellow. It is such a pretty soft color
Kathy Upton says
At first I liked the pale yellow over the ecru but the WHITE absolutely pops with the lavender and darker purple. That might be my color palette instead of my first choice. It’s a beautiful color combination.
Diane says
I’m probably not the one to give an opinion since I’m not usually a fan of yellow or white as a background. 🙂
Looking at the pictures though I think the white really does make the other colors look nice. The yellow is ok, just not as nice as the white.
lynne quinsland says
ok, first reaction is go with the white. i seem to be in a white stage right now.
on further examination of the pattern and the colors chosen and their placement, i look at the little 9 patches and see the yellow/gold and look at their placement in the quilt. right smack dab in the middle of the white. now, my mind gets going and THAT would be the quilt to be named sunny side up! LOL i visualize an egg. now, i like eggs, but not so much for a visual in my quilt.
i would therefore now choose the soft yellow. i actually do like how it melds the colors into a richness that the white doesnt give.
Diane Muska says
Also like how the yellow warms it up. Go with whatever you think your friend will like best!
Julie in GA says
I love the pale yellow with your other colors. That would definitely be my first choice.
Andi says
Another vote for the yellow. I think the white is too stark. The yellow gives everything a warm glow.
Ott says
I like the pale yellow (krystal). You have tried the white – now try something different and you will know for sure what you like for the NEXT time !!
Chris in So Cal says
I also think you should use the yellow. The white is too stark against the cheddar.
Karen Langseth says
I’m in the yellow camp too…..it helps the cheddar play nicer!!
Josie says
I am NOT a yellow fan..but looking at your examples I see
the pale yellow being a mottled marble fabric and I thnk it makes the other colors blend so nice together , a true warm
feeling ..so I would go with the yellow I think it helps to calm the gold color..
Kate says
Yellow is special…
DebrafromMD says
Consider that this quilt is intended for a lady dealing with cancer, I would opt for the yellow. It won’t show the use quite as quickly as the white.
Marion Morgan says
I have no idea but either white or yellow seem to be the top two. Yellow is warm, white can be stark or really add zing. Sorry, I am no help.
Lee says
My eyes land better on the yellow Krystal..
EagleKnits says
I like the yellow; it gives the quilt a warmer, more comforting look.
Linda Steller says
White! Now go sew. ;D
Susan says
I’m sure you’ve made your choice, and the die is cast, as Mama used to say. The yellow is softer and blendier, and the white is more stark and sharp. It would depend on which you liked better. I liked the softer look for these colors, but I don’t think either decision could be wrong at all.
Teresa in Music City says
I really like the white with your first color choices, but the new colors have that gold color where the green was in the first quilt. It would definitely give more contrast; but I’m just not sure of the two together. However, if you use the yellow, it will become a yellow quilt. That’s a lot of yellow, and yellow tends to take over.
Jennifer in Indy says
I vote for the pale yellow. I think it works better with the other fabrics in this quilt.
Beth C. says
I think the white makes it updated and makes the other colors crisp, upbeat! Also I don’t think that it’s such a large amount of white that it would be difficult to keep clean.
Enjoy your blog, Beth in AL

Here’s my 2 cents worth. I think the white makes the other colors really pop, while the yellow mutes them. If it were me, I would definitely go with the white. and save the yellow for another project. Can’t wait to see the finished project.
Jane says
Your goal????
The yellow feels very warm and inviting. If this is a quilt of comfort….go with the yellow.
Melissa in PA says
Well, there’s no real consensus here. Sometimes friends can be of no help. Some decisions are yours alone.
I always vote for yellow. But the white is always so crisp and clean. I can’t decide, either. Probably why I have so many half-done projects laying around.
Just pick one and don’t look back!
pdudgeon, says
go with the pale yellow–it adds warmth and sunshine and comfort to the quilt.
Terri says
Go with your gut, yes the yellow looks great but. . . it will look better in this instance in the white.
Lynn says
I go for the pale yoellow. Also you have a lot of dimples already. and I like the variety the Krysal gives The yellow background will make up more like your new drawing than the original quilt.
marcie says
I like contrast so would use white as first choice, and yellow would be my second choice. I would personally avoid the ecru – I try to use one or the other in a project but not both white AND ecru..
Peg H says
I like the pale yellow Krystal. And I’m not normally a yellow sorta person. However, yellow and gold looks so good with purple, and the combo you’re showing works well for me. Can’t wait to see what you choose!
Betty says
Can’t believe I’m liking the pale yellow best, I’m not a yellow fan! I just think it looks more soft and comfy and that is what the quilt is intended to be.
Mary Kunna says
My vote is yellow.
Gale says
The soft yellow definitely. It just makes it look softer and cozier and tones down the cheddar. Besides that, do you want the whole quilt made of dimples?
Dar in MO says
This was very strange. Although each picture had a different color caption, all the photos looked like the same color in the blocks. Either my eyes are really, really bad or my computer is playing tricks on me. The color in all three pictures is an ecru or tan. I’m sure you’ve made your choice and have finished seewing anyway.:)
