The Silky Bantams are gorgeous chickens.
The white one in front is Louise, the mom to Smokie, Sallie, Houdi and Gracie (two different hatches). Smokie and Sallie are in the back and Tiffany is the little brown hen. She’s the same age as Louise and then there’s a bigger version of Louise . . Thelma. They were all supposed to be hens but Thelma is not a hen! That’s why we keep having baby chickens.
Chickens are known for being not the smartest creatures. Please don’t tell Miss Hattie I said that. By the way, she has not been able to escape since Vince reinforced Fort Knox the run. I let them out during the day when he’s not home. He knows I do that but he doesn’t mind so long as the shop doors aren’t open. I’ve also been banned from the shop. Go figure! There are some powerful and, according to Vince, very expensive to operate, lights in there and for some reason, I cannot remember to turn them off when I turn them on.
Anyway, chickens are not smart. These Silkies are off the chart not smart. They are so goofy. Seriously . . it rains and hails and they stand right out there watching it hit them in the head. We divided the watermelon carcass up and took it out to the chickens. The Silkies all ran circles around it looking at it like they thought it was going to attack them. Vince and I just shook our heads.
This is Sallie. Isn’t she gorgeous! They move at the speed of light and it’s nearly impossible to get a good picture of them. I never could get a good picture of Smokie but he’s real dark and probably prettier than Sallie. I guess I should say she’s pretty and he’s handsome!

Chickens and turkeys have been known to drown from looking up to see what is falling from the sky! LOL!

Silkies mean such different things to us! For a minute there, I thought you might be taking up crazy quilting! =)

The silkies are beautiful and look so soft. Do they lay eggs? What size, if they do? And do they have to be kept separate from the rest of the chickens?
I’m glad you let the others out when Vince is gone, and hope there will be more Miss Hattie stories coming up. I think I’ve fallen in love with that lady–oops, I mean chicken.

I saw some beautiful “feather-footed fancy” chickens while at Bates Nut Farm one weekend. They looked like Silkies to me, but they were black with a gorgeous rust/copper color showing through. Guess what…I thought of you!
