For the first time in months and months, there’s nothing sitting around here waiting to be planted. The fruit trees are all planted. The butterfly bushes are all planted. The climbing vines are all planted. The garden is all planted. Sweet potato slips should arrive Friday and they’ll have to be planted but there aren’t many of them coming.
Over the weekend Vince tilled up a spot for my yacon.
This is in one corner of the orchard. There’s no room in the garden for anything else.
I only got three plants to start with. I was looking online for some Jerusalem Artichokes, which I couldn’t find anywhere this late in the season, and came across the yacon. After a little research, I was anxious to try these. Here’s a story in Mother Earth News about yacon. Sounds interesting!
We planted vines . . honeysuckle, jasmine and wysteria, along the fence posts and hope they’ll spread and cover the fence with beautiful, fragrant blossoms.
Looking back from the fence towards the house, there’s still room for probably 20 to 25 more fruit trees but that’s not going to happen this year. We want more jujube, plum, persimmon and I’m not sure what else.
Here it is almost June 1 and we still have green . . probably weeds and not grass but at least it’s green!
It’s nice to have everything planted. I wonder what Vince is going to do this weekend. Seems like every weekend for so long, he’s been planting trees. I’m betting he’ll come up with something to keep himself busy and I hope it doesn’t involve kittens!

Yacon sounds yummy… I have a bumper crop of Jerusalem Artichokes if you need any! A few “escaped” my raised bed and need to be moved before they run too wild.

Kittens are not so bad. They are a lot of fun and help keep mice away.

Is it the pipe fence you have planted the vines around? If it is you will be OK. If it is the pole and “squares” kind of fence you’ll have to watch…..some of those are very woody vines and might sag your fence enough to be ineffective. I don’t know about jasmine, but I’m familiar with honeysuckle and wisteria…which pulled down our lattice. What a mess!! Good luck!

Maybe Vince will clean up his shop? 😉
Becky in KCMO says
Do the cows come up to these fences? Do they like to eat any of these vines? Wisteria here in KCMO can pull down house trim……

Yacon sounds delicious. I had never heard of it before. And jasmine is such a wonderful smell. I had a plant in a pot at one time, then had to have surgery, and when I got back home it had died of thirst. I should have transplanted it next to the house. As for honeysuckle, that is a smell forever etched in my brain from my childhood. It grows as a weed here in KY and the smell is heavenly. We used to pull the flowers off and suck the nectar out when we were kids, and if I could find some now I think I would do it again. So sweet it’s no wonder the bees and hummingbirds love it. Hope Vince gets a restful, cat free weekend.

Maybe he will just sit on the porch sipping (insert favorite drink here) and just enjoying what he has done already ! that is what my Dearest Hubs would be doing !LOL

Judy – I have a LOT of Jerusalem artichokes. Would be more than happy to share. Is there a way to ship them without violating any laws? As in I know some plants can not go to some states (no gooseberries, currants to ship here – although there ARE lots of gooseberries and currants already being cultivated here!). Postal regulations I can check with no problem.
Rebecca says
Thanks for introducing me to a new fruit(?) It sounds like a sweet jicama. Have you ever considered planting that?
Jennifer says
Totally skimming and thought you said you were planting bacon – though to myself “boy, she really can make anything grow.” Then thought again and realized I had probably Mis-read it!

Now that was so funny.! Good thing I didn’t have liquid in my mouth when I read your reply.

You’ve certainly planted more than a few things this year. Save something to do for next year!

Think Vince will want to go out and look for bargains 🙂
