Houdi and Gracie are our newest baby bantam Silkies that hatched and I think I heard them grumbling today because they think they’re so adorable and Miss Hattie is just a plain jane red hen and yet, she’s getting all the attention. It was time to get a new photo of them and share it on the blog so they don’t feel neglected.
Houdi is the bigger one, probably a rooster, and he got his name from being an escape artist. Gracie is a couple of weeks younger than Houdi and I’m hoping she’s a girl. She has the sweetest expressions but both of them are wild as jackrabbits. We haven’t spent much time with them and they are scared to death of us . . me especially.
I’m not sure we’re going to keep our Silkies. If we can find a good home for them, we may give them all away. We have too many chickens and while the Silkies are cute, and they lay nice Speck sized eggs, they’re not good for much else. Vince said he would like to have 6 good laying hens. Right now, we have 12 good laying hens, 7 Silkies — 2 of which for sure are roosters, 3 Dominiques – 1 is a rooster and 2 are lazy hens that lay an egg every other day if they feel like it. That’s 22 chickens! It really is too many for our purposes.
But, knowing how much I cried when I gave my chickens away in Missouri, if I had to guess, I’d say we’ll keep them all til they die of old age or . . I guess the way things are progressing, we might die of old age before the chickens do!

The silkies are beautiful but Miss Hattie is definitely not plain Jane!

Don’t give away your chickens. Miss Hattie would be so lonesome without all her friends and you can’t give her away. The silkies are so cute, but I really prefer a nice red hen with personality to spare, like Miss Hattie.

I believe my mother-in-law is looking to get some silkies. If you do decide to get rid of them, please let me know, she may want them. Thanks, tx.angela(dot)Gibson@gmail(dot)com
