Have you ever seen a Texas Jackrabbit? I had never seen one and when we were looking at this place before we bought it, we were riding around on the land with the realtor in her RTV and saw one. We all thought it was a deer . . they jump that high.
My pictures aren’t great but we were outside yesterday and there was one just on the other side of the fence.
As I tried to move in closer, he ran off.
They are really fun to watch and the woods seem to be full of them. I keep my camera with me so hopefully I can get better pictures some day.
See how much excitement we have around here? A new kitten and Jackrabbits everywhere! 🙂

My first visit to Texas was in 1968 for my eldest brothers wedding. He had taken us on base to see where he worked, in the field by the parking lot was this huge animal with really long ears that looked like a rabbit. He told us the guys liked to throw things at them just to see how high they would jump….

Startle them and it seems they go sky high! They’re amazing to watch.

How do you keep the rabbits out of your garden? I assumed your garden fences would keep out the deer but the rabbits are a different hungry critter.
JudyL says
We have to put chicken wire from the ground up 2′. Even with smaller holes near the bottom of the high fence, the rabbits go through with ease.

In KY a fence won’t stop a deer, but planting marigolds around the garden will stop the other critters. They don’t like the smell. Except for the cows, but then those are beasts of another planet. I’ve been to Texas twice but ddn’t see any jackrabbits either time. My brilliant son has chased a black bear here though, trying to get a picture of it. I think he has a death wish hidden deep behind his beautiful brown eyes, because he has also totaled 4 pickup trucks. Getting married settled him down, but every time I hear he’s going 4 wheelin’ I worry a lot. I think the crazy streak comes from his dad’s side of the family.

When we lived there, and in MO, an 8′ fence made with PVC pipe for the poles and landscaping plastic fencing kept the deer out. Here, the winds are too high and that plastic hasn’t held up at all so we’re doing the real metal 8′ fencing. It will keep the deer in or out here . . most ranchers use it to keep the deer in but we’re trying to keep them out.

I would find that very entertaining. I love watching nature and her critters.

I still get excited about seeing wildlife! Jackrabbits can really jump a long way, and so fast, and I think you did a good job of getting a photo at all!

Years ago I saw my first road runner and jack rabbit: told my parents they are not like in the cartoons !LOL What did I know, I was a kid !LOL

Gosh haven’t seen a jack rabbit for years. Where I grew up you would see them all the time. They could cross a plowed field in nothing flat. Brought back memories.

Out here in the Southern California desert we have our share of jack rabbits and I dislike them very much. They eat everything in site when they are hungry. They even ate a baby palm tree down to the roots. Oh, and they ate the freshly planted marigolds. So much for that myth. There has been a lot of new home building in recent years behind our house and in the general area and it has destroyed their habitat, so now they eat everything in all of our yards. I’ve given up planting anything.
