When my husband retires, I think he should contract himself out as a professional shopper. When we lived in MO, our house was 6 years old when we bought it and had good appliances but the dishwasher wasn’t very quiet and one day we were in our teeny tiny Sears store (which might have been bigger than our teeny tiny Sears store here!) I was mesmerized by a nice gas stove (I had electric — glasstop, no less, and so wanted a gas stove) and kept trying to get Vince to come over and look at it. Anyway, we ended up with a $1,300 dishwasher for less than $500. I wrote about it here. I dearly loved that dishwasher.
Fast forward almost 3-1/2 years later and I’ve had my fill of not having a dishwasher. Hopefully next week the electrician and cabinet guy can get together and get the ball rolling to get a dishwasher installed. Today I called my favorite appliance store about an hour from here and got some prices on a dishwasher. I told the lady that all I cared about was that it was stainless and quiet – real quiet. My house is the size of a peanut and the kitchen is smack dab in the middle of everything. She gave me some prices and we were thinking of going over there tomorrow but then I remembered the dishwasher we had gotten at Sears in MO and at the same time, saw the Sears ad on my sidebar so we went to Sears.
We found this one. It was $1,279 marked down to $831 and by the time Vince got this discount and that discount, we got it for less than half of its original price. He is amazing!
They had to order it and it will be here next week. I’ll be happy if it will be installed by the end of the month. The crazy cabinet configuration in my kitchen doesn’t work so well for adding a dishwasher. There’s a 21″ cabinet and then a 36″ set of drawers. The dishwasher needs a 24″ opening so we’re going to . . you know . . I don’t even know what we’re doing and I don’t really care. I will end up with some configuration of cabinets and a DISHWASHER and that’s all that matters to me!

I think that’s what I miss most when living in the motorhome as we are right now–no dishwasher. Some of the newer motorhomes have dishwasher drawers but I have so few cabinets, I will just wash dishes. I don’t do any canning and try not to do any really complicated cooking so my dishes are few.

You really DON’T want dishwasher drawers, Janna. My daughter bought a house that had them, and they were terrible. They ended up buying a regular dishwasher within a month.

What a great shopper he is! When I need something, I’m coming to Vince to find it for me!

Has Vince thought of starting his own blog post about how to save money when shopping? If or whenever he does, I would like to sign up for it.

I would be so miserable without a dishwasher… good for you for making it that long! The less time in the kitchen the better for me…

Judy, think about raising the height of the dishwasher if you can in your configuration. This is your last house . . . . I love mine, even tho’ it’s not directly next to the sink, but next to the pantry. My adult kids wish they had done the same.

I went without a dishwasher for 6 months many years ago. I thought that since there was only the two of us, and only me during the week, I wouldn’t mind washing the dishes. It didn’t take long before I was trying to figure out how to get one into that little kitchen. Never let that happen again!! Hope all goes well and quickly.
