We’ve been letting the 12 red hens out every day to free range. Actually we let 11 hens out. Miss Hattie lets herself out whenever she’s ready. The others I let out of their coop, into the run, at daylight and then around mid-morning, hopefully after they’ve laid their eggs, I open the gate to their run and let them free range til dusk. Their main job is to keep the grasshopper population down and whether they’re succeeding or not, it’s so fun to watch them chase grasshoppers all day.
From the 12 hens, I’ve been getting 10 eggs from the nesting/laying boxes. Miss Hattie has her own special place for laying. Where’s that 12th hen laying her eggs?
The 12th hen must not have looked at the calendar. She must not realize Easter has passed and she is still hiding her eggs. One thing for sure . . after the snake and the mouse, I am not sticking my hand under there to get that egg. I raked it out with a stick.
I wonder where else I’m going to find eggs that have been deposited here and there. Unless I know when it was laid, I toss it, so they’re wasting eggs by not laying them in the right spot. Crazy girls!

Put the egg in a cup of cold water. If it lays on its side, it’s fresh. If it floats up to the top….icky. If it bobbles just a little but doesn’t rise/stand on end to touch the top of the water, I’ll use it within the next few days.

We have 13 chickens here in Houston. One of them is blind from birth, so we find her eggs wherever she happens to be when the mood hits her. Chickens are endlessly amusing – better than television any day!

That was pretty well hidden. I had to look a couple of times before I found it!
