Truly, I’m a dork when it comes to cameras. Why do they have to be so difficult? Why can’t my pictures be great . . even some of the time? I keep thinking it’s the camera but I know it’s the girl behind the camera.
For a while, I thought . . if only I had a decent Nikon camera, my photos would be good. I bought a Nikon D40 and that’s kinda like having a Featherweight sewing machine . . everyone loves the D40. It’s such a good camera. I can’t even remember why now . . maybe because it makes movies, and D40 doesn’t, I got a Nikon D3100. I really do love both those cameras but . . not only am I a dork but I’m careless with my cameras. Back when we lived in places where it rained, occasionally a camera would get left outside in the rain. I’ve dropped more than a couple of cameras. I lose things . . I often find them but who wants to lose a Nikon D3100? So often I have a camera stuffed in my pocket. I will occasionally get the camera wet while out watering in the garden. Let’s face it . . I’m rough on cameras so inexpensive cameras are much better for me. Vince will find last year’s models, usually Sony Cybershots, on sale often for less than $50. Those are good cameras for me.
But, while shopping yesterday . . this one caught my eye.
It is a cool camera. You know why it’s so cool? It has wi-fi and it will send photos directly to my photobucket account or directly to my phone or back up new photos/videos directly to my computer . . wirelessly! What will they think of next?
The real issue with my photography is that I just need to read the book. I need to learn what ISO means and what shutter means and what aperture means. I don’t want to read about it . . I just want to take perfect pictures! It isn’t the camera’s fault. It’s my fault.
Today we did a bit of exploring. I took along a Sony Cybershot, and the new Samsung NX1000. I’m anxious to look at the photos and see what I think.
Maybe I’ll take a photography class online . . or maybe not.

i am just like you!!! i got one that is huge, i got another one that is just as huge, and this one you can switch out lenses! ok. so, if i knew what i was doing that would be great! so, i get myself one of the ones that is tiny and slips in my pocket or purse easy peasy. it also goes online wi-fi…….what a pain to text out the info for it to do it though! sometimes i think it is easier to just attach the camera to the computer and do it that way….i always seem to have issues with loading and finding pictures where i put them on the computer…..i love, love, love to take pictures but sure do wish i had a camera that put up with operator error!

When I got my new camera in December I looked at the sony that had the wifi. I didn’t get it because you have to add that to your cell phone bill,. I don’t have an iPhone so I don’t have the data plan. It is interesting though.

I have been looking at online photo classes. If you take one, keep me posted. The one I have been looking at is at http://shootflyshoot.com/. I think it was recommended somewhere along the way. I looked at the craftsy class, but it didn’t seem like the class for me.

I can’t tell you how many times I cut off heads, take pictures of feet or the floor. Even today with an Ipad that shows me what the picture would look like at that very moment I can’t get a good picture. Take that back…I did get a good shot of a professional photographer taking a picture of herself with a bird on her head. She was in a cage with birds….I took a great picture of her. Fitting her face in between the bars of the cage, but the bird on her head didn’t show!!!! She looks like she is in prison, but she did ask me permission to use the photo.,
My 2 year old adopted Grandson can take better pictures then I can. He knows how to aim and gets many good pictures using his mother’s phone or my Ipad.

OH I’m so w you I love my pt and shoot camera…. but when I want good photos of something, I get my DGT (dear Grandteen) to so the shootin her hands are steady and she has a nice cannon.
DH wants to buy a Nikon D7000 but he is baulking at the price. He could have had it for Christmas at a good price but he waited and now it’s still high (higher than it was at Thanksgiving) and they are not going to be making them any more…. or he could get the next one MORE $$$$
love my point and shoot sony cyber shot.

I treated myself to a Nikon D3100, what, two years ago, and I got so irritated the first day I tried to use it that I stuff it back in the box. I mean, they should tell you that the UBS cord and memory card doesn’t come with the camera. Anyway, my good old P&S has been chugging along just fine for me. Be sure to review the new camera for us!

I couldn’t see your new toy. Nor could I see the photo of the hidden egg. This is the first time your pictures didn’t come through on the blog as normal. Maybe I have to find a way to go into photobucket account to see them?? Oh weel, if I don’t see them, I won’t be tempted to want one, right?

Well, I enjoy seeing your photos and they seem pretty darn good to me, regardless of what brand of camera you use or what it’s been through. Most often, I use my phone to snap photos because I forget to take my camera. I have an old Canon AE-1 camera and I need the manual on hand every time I want to use it.

I think your pictures are fine….they make the point you want….will they win any photo awards, probably not…I for one don’t come to your sight to see the perfect photos, I come for the content and if they are shown with a photo that’s great.

I’ve never read the book on Paul’s D50, just trial and error. Mostly I use the auto spot, sometimes the close-up. I have a second lens, and I’ve never swapped them out. This was the camera for Paul, Mr. Professional Photographer, and I don’t do it justice, but the pictures do come out nice. I misplace the lens cap now and then, but I haven’t left it out in the rain. =)

LOL – you ARE a dork! Well, only as dorky as the rest of us, right?!??
BTW – they make “water resistant” cameras now! Maybe that would help with your rain/watering vs. camera issues?
I love this post – it’s one of my favorites!

I can’t believe there are two people, right here, who own D3100 cameras and don’t use them!
We bought our youngest one for her senior year, in college, she was an art major and had to photograph all her work. Bought son one because he is the father to our grandchildren…. wish I had bought a third for the other daughter who is now expecting. It’s a great camera!
I have not heard of a camera connecting to wifi. Hmmm… But I do have a memory card that goes in the card slot, of the camera, that automatically sends the photos to my computer. You can also use their app to send your camera photo to the computer, no card required. The card is called Eye-Fi. I just can’t figure out how to get the photos out of the Eye-Fi program into *my* photo program….
We are all dorks to a certain degree…

I love reading your posts about cameras (well, I love all your posts!) because I’m always on the lookout for something simpler than what I have now. My main problem with cameras is I need one that will put up with my shaky hands. I have familial tremor, so I often look like I have a bad case of the DTs, and it gets worse when I try to hold still to take a picture! I have a fancy Pentax K2000 which I love because of its anti-shake technology, but it’s big, clumsy, and I have to upload the files to Aperture in RAW format, export them to JPEG, and then I have to size them down because they start off at some tremendous poster size like 50 x 30 or something. It’s a lot of work for me to post photos. I’ve heard about the wi-fi cameras, so I’m anxious to know what you think.
