What are you doing for Valentine’s Day? I guess we’re weird or cheap . . maybe that’s the word . . cheap! I can’t see spending $3 or $4 or more for a card just to have to either stick it in a drawer or throw it away. Vince asked me last night if I would like for him to take off Friday and we would go to Austin, spend the day and eat out. I told him I’d rather he not take the day off . . save it for another time, but I would be happy if he would help me plant potatoes.
At lunch he told me that I work so hard cooking all the time, he really wants to take me out tonight so we’re probably going to Blanket to eat catfish.
I did make something . .
A batch for us and a batch for the neighbors.
On Monday evening, my neighbor brought me a bag of tea cakes. Oh, how I love those things!
On Tuesday evening, my neighbor brought a bag of chocolate cookies. She apologized for making chocolate cookies but they were so good . . they were like brownies with an Andes mint in the middle with pecans in them. I’ll have to get that recipe.
Last night after dinner, Vince said “What did Minnie make today?” and I said “I don’t know . . I’ll call her. I got her voice mail and I said “Minnie, this is Judy. It wasn’t important, you don’t need to call me back.” Vince was sitting at the table saying “It IS important! We’re out of cookies!” She called me back and said “We’re all going to have to have a bowl of Blue Bell tonight because I didn’t bake anything!”
When I saw the recipe for Red Velvet Brownies this morning, I decided to make them and share. When I realized the recipe only made an 8″ x 8″ pan, I decided I’d make a pan for them and a pan for us!
It’s nice to have good neighbors, even if it’s 1-1/2 miles round trip to their house.

Hope you will share the Andes Mint cookie recipe. I have just made one using them on top of a cookie made with a Devil’s Food cake mix as the fudgy cookie base. Would like to try another one too.

1.5 miles is a great walk! The brownies look delicious. I will say that, now, every time I come across one of those cards tucked into a drawer or a box, I’m thankful that I saved them.

Me, too!

Glad I don’t have a neighbor like yours. I would be waddling instead of walking…LOL

Its always nice to have someone at the door and they have a pan or bowl with goodies in it. Of course the bowl or pan always has to go home with something in it. But so good to eat something that someone else has baked or made.
A bowl of pulled beef arrived at my door yesterday. Yumm yummy.

Early dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant. The cards we exchange I save from year to year and we re-exchange them….after all, the names are the same. 🙂 Works for us!

Bill took porterhouse steaks out three days ago, but it wasn’t thawed. So last night we were going to have it and Bill was too tired to wait. Tonight we were both wore out so we came to town and had shrimp. Maybe we should have it for lunch, but we won’t be home for lunch tomorrow

My husband is in the kitchen making dinner. A few days ago, he gave me the options of Butter Chicken or Curry Chicken for Valentines’ Day. I couldn’t make up my mind and said.. BOTH! Well, he is making BOTH! We will actually have the Butter Chicken tomorrow night as it is always better the next day.
I’ve been recovering from a hysterectomy, so I can’t do very much for him. But he knows I love him and I know I have a WONDERFUL husband!

We do not spend a lot on any holiday. We are happy as we are. I made Chris some homemade Almond Joy bars and he made me spm chicolate dipped strawberries. It’s a perfect Valentine’s Day……I got to sew too!

Hubby and I will sometimes go to the card rack in Target -find a card that says what we want – show it to eachother and then put it back and spend the money on something we need instead. The sentiments are there – buying the piece of paper is not needed (and last night he made me heart shaped pancakes – that’s love !)

I made my husband a treat when I got home from work. I made your Meyer Lemon Tart! I’ve been dying to try it. It’s sitting in the kitchen cooling right now. My hubby says that it smells good. That’s about the best compliment he pays because he won’t eat anything he doesn’t like the smell of!

My sweet hubby (of almost 40 years) created a Valentine for me on the computer! We’re remodeling our bathroom and the card had a swatch of the wallpaper on it and “XOXO” written in the green paint we’re painting it with. It read, “You’re the glue for my wallpaper, the green in my paint (and inside) the Chambord in my Purple Hooter” (his favorite cocktail. Is that creative and unexpected or what!!?

Please tell me about the tea cakes your neighbor made. My mother used to make what she called tea cakes, that were actually like a really dense cupcake with icing. The bad thing is that only she knew the recipe, and she did not have it written down anywhere. Wouldn’t it be funny if your neighbor in Texas made the same thing as my mother in Kentucky?

I’m not a big fan of cards either. lol. I made a fancy dinner of spaghetti with a homemade red wine sauce and truffles for dessert! Then we played the new game we bought. It was a good evening.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is not really commercialized in Austria. I had to look hard to find a tiny tin heart box with 4 truffles in it for my son. I have never heard of velvet brownies – have to try those! I have mini muffin pans – I bet you could put brownie mix, and Andies mint and a pecan in each spot and have bite-sized brownie morsels like you are talking about. Sounds good. Restaurants will be less crowded tonight than yesterday, so you and Vince will have a nicer time! My birthday sometimes falls on Mother’s Day and I have learned NOT to go out to eat on that day! Have fun planting potatoes – I am hoping to plant potatoes this year too! Evelyn

Neighbors three quarters of a mile away sounds about right….any closer and you could actually smell all those goodies she bakes and you’d be hungry all the time. 🙂
DH brought me fudge from the hardware store for Valentine’e…..and I made him pancakes for supper and then went back to work. Exciting stuff!!

The brownies look good. Hope you will share the recipe. Usually we give each other a card, but this year we are trying not to buy anything that has to be packed and moved. So while we were buying a couple of cards to go with gifts for others, we each picked out a valentine, gave it to the other, and put them back after reading:) Felt a little guilty about that, but it was kind of fun too:)
