Yesterday morning Speck had to be at the vet at 8 a.m. for his teeth cleaning. It is so hard for me to leave him there. He gets so upset, he looks so pitiful walking off with the vet tech leading him, tail tucked between his legs, like he’s just lost his best friend. I know . . he’s a dog . . but he’s my baby. My house was way too quiet yesterday morning without him, unless you count that darned Dominique rooster that crows all day and still aggravates me that Roscoe is gone.
So, after dropping Speck off, I figured I’d stop by Kroger. Vince and I went on Sunday but our Kroger is not much bigger than the average convenience store and it was packed in there on Sunday. I don’t enjoy shopping when it’s like that. Knowing that fairly early in the morning, as far as grocery shopping goes, I might find some marked down meat so I headed straight to the meat counter. Good decision!
Left side front is a package of steak I will cook with onions and bell papers, make gravy and serve over rice. It will be at least two dinners and probably a lunch. There are 12 pieces of meat in there. That package was marked down to $6.15. Behind it is brats, marked down to $2.99 and that will be at least a dinner and a lunch. At the back are two packs of chicken breasts. I love those that are individually wrapped. One pack was $5.52 and one was $6.06. For $11.58 we’ll get three meals. Next is a package of three thick pork chops for grilling. That will be one dinner and one lunch. For dinner one night, we’ll each have a pork chop. For lunch one day, I’ll thinly slice the leftover grilled chop, add some peppers and onions and we’ll have pork chop sandwiches. In the front of the right side is a package of steaks.
I’m not real sure who would have paid $18.32 for these two steaks but with the Kroger card, they would have been $11.56, but on mark down day, I got them for $8.08. I’ll pay that price!
The sell by date on all this meat was January 22 and I bought it on January 21. I don’t have a problem with that at all.
The brats, gravy steak and pork chops were vacuum sealed. The chicken, since the breasts are already individually wrapped, was placed in a zipper freezer bag. The steak was seasoned that morning, placed in a zipper bag to “marinate” for the day and grilled last night. I usually eat half my steak, then slice it up and cook it with onions and peppers, just like a leftover grilled pork chop, and we have that for sandwiches for lunch so we’ll get more than one meal out of two steaks this size.
My neighbor makes the best seasoning mix! It’s so good on chicken, steak, pork chops! Have I said lately that I love my neighbors? 🙂
Watch those bargain bins at the grocery store. I saved about $17 . . and that’s using the “with card” price and not the original prices. I don’t go to the grocery store often but when I do, I try to get there early in the morning when they’re reducing the meat prices on the meat nearing its “sell by” date. Every little bit of savings helps, right?

I was told by our Kroger butcher that the Kroger brand brats come in from the same factory. I love both brands.

Our Meijer store had a two day sale on Friday & Sat. And so I went on Friday around 8:30 AM. The butcher opens at 9. I got boneless pork half loins for $1.55/lb.- had butcher slice them into 3/4″ tenderloin chops (which were on display in their meat case for $3.99/lb!!!). Bought chicken breast (boneless/skinless for $1.52/lb as well as beautiful boneless top loin roast for $2.99/lb instead of $5.99/lb! Pulled out an extra turkey I bought at Thanksgiving to make room in my two freezers for the meat I bought! Repackaged it into meal sizes, etc. Cooked turkey for dinner the next day. Found out yesterday that our income will drop by $2100/month in 10 days and aren’t sure when it will go back up! So grateful for our food storage!! I don’t have to go to the store again for months if need be!

DH buys most of our meats. I don’t think I’ve had meat that was’fresh’ or not marked sown aince we met! Haven’t gotten sick yet.

I made your laundry detergent about three weeks ago and think what a waste I didn’t do that sooner. That’s a huge savings on something that makes no difference whatsoever. Every load has come out perfectly clean and fresh.

Meats have gone up in price so much. It looks like your Kroger marks down more than our Kroger. I lucked out yesterday needing to buy a large beef roast. I had a $3.00 coupon to make the meat a much better buy.

I love the meat bargain bin! Hubby and I love New York Steaks, but who can afford them at full price? Even when they’re on sale it’s too steep. I guess others feel that way too because I get bargain NY steaks fairly often.
Your neighbor’s seasoning mix sounds good. I keep trying to find one. The butcher in Logan,UT, where I used to live had a fantastic rub. Not willing to drive 15 hours to get it! Any chance your neighbor would share the recipe?

Yes, that’s the bin I head for first, and then to the day old bread and bakery items. I think you probably make all yours, but I’ve gotten some great deals on croissants and other goodies from time to time – even Biscoff once for so cheap it was a steal.

I am fortunate in the protein dept. I work for a large food supplier and once every quarter we have sales for employees only, Damaged cases, too short shelf life for major chain stores, etc. . .Everything is 75¢ per pound. Bacon. Ham. Ribs. Beef. Chicken. Pizza crusts, restaurant supply crepes, totillas, flatbread. Lunch meat, anything and everything the company produces. Roast. Our freezer is always full,.Up until last year it was 50¢ pound.

Do you put the money you saved in your yarn account? Sounds like a good idea to me.
The other day I was at my neighborhood grocery store to get a dozen eggs. While there I was looking at the steaks. The owner who always works back in the meat dept asked what I wanted. I said a good steak. “Demonico?” he asked. They were $9.99 a pound. I said I’d love one but couldn’t pay that much. He said, “I can do better. How’s $5.99 sound?” I had steak for supper that night. Pays to know the owner of the store!

I, too, look for the sale meats….it is just as good and I can always freeze it. I rarely pay full price for meat. I usually say to myself…”ok you saved $ on meat, so now you can use that money for fabric!”

We just ordered a Smoker, thanks to your influence. Now I need all the tips I can gather – and I need to find sales on meat! Thanks for your good cooking ideas that lead me astray fairly often.
