Since my friend in Louisiana sent me all those lemons, and I’m just about finished putting them up, I was looking for something on the blog this morning and came across this picture from 2009.
If you look closely, you’ll see someone out helping himself to oranges. And, it was a sheriff’s deputy!
The truth is, the neighbor’s burglar alarm had gone off and several deputies had been dispatched. They all knew mom and dad and asked if they could pick some fruit and of course, mom and dad were happy to have someone relieve the trees of some of their load.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to grow citrus here.

Is it too cold or two dry or both for your area and the citrus. I’d love to have some trees also but NY is just NOT the place for it. 😉
Hugs!!!!

I hope they gave him a bag to carry his “loot”!!

I just got home from the store where I picked up a bag of ‘cuties’.
After one bite I knew it was what my first husband grew in our back yard when I lived in south Louisiana–sweet seedless mandarins.
The ‘cuties’ are ok, but there is nothing like walking outside and picking one off the tree!!

My Dad loves his citrus, he has several trees that he has adopted and takes care of around Mesa Arizona. He loves to pick his fruit and deliveries it to everyone he knows.. He should be mail a box to us soon.

How do you “put up oranges” – just wondering!
Sue in Scottsdale, AZ says
We have 2 citrus trees that are very old. One is a sweet pink grapefruit and navel orange tree and the other is a lemon tree. Last year we had no lemons and only 1 orange although the grapefruits were plentiful. This year we have no oranges and a full tree of grapefruit and a full tree of lemons. However, the freeze we had last week -temps at night in the very low 20s and once into the teens and one day with the high only reaching 45 and the rest of the time only in the low 50s, it appears that we have lost all the lemons. I have taken some off the tree, but they aren’t doing very well. I hope that we don’t lose the trees themselves and next year we get a good crop!

I’d like to plant a lemon tree, but I’m not sure if they will grow in the cool temperature-d Pacific Northwest. We’ve also thought of a plum tree… This post reminds me of those desires, so maybe we’ll actually DO it this year! 🙂

Do you have an attic? I read about a guy today who grows satsuma tangerines in his attic in containers. =)

You need to be in the Valley for that. If we had made our usual trip to SPI this year we would be coming back with Ruby Red Grapefruit right off the trees!
