I try to put on a brave front and I sometimes go out after dark and I sometimes sleep with the windows open but I’m the biggest chicken ever.
Last night we were watching the local news and something hit our front door. It wasn’t like a giant grasshopper .. it was something pretty big. To get to our house, which you can’t even see from the highway, you have to come through a gate and there are no lights back here so it’s kinda hard to believe that even a bad guy would come back here in the dark . . especially when we’re home.
Vince was sitting in his chair, I’m sitting in my chair. We both hear this big bump at the door. We looked at each other and Vince said a few words I won’t repeat here. I said “YOU go see what it was but please don’t open the door . . just look through the window.” He walked over there, looked out and said “It’s a cat!” In response to my questions, he told me it was a white cat, didn’t look like it was in poor condition, looked like it wanted to come inside. Fat chance of that happening!
Vince sat back down and almost before he was back in his chair, the white cat appeared at the other door!
Don’t even try to convince me that cats kill snakes and mice and scorpions and chickens!! I’m not a cat lover . . not a cat hater so long as they belong to someone else. I want no part of it and I don’t want it living here.
So far today, I have not seen it. I did see kitty footprints on the seat in the RTV but I’m hoping it has move on and found a more kitty friendly home!
And, I just keep thinking . . what would I have done if I had been here alone when something hit the door like that cat did! Scary thought!
The cat seems to be gone now . . haven’t seen it all day and I’m glad!

do you feel as guilty as I do for not being a cat person… just not a fan of them. Couple nights ago I let the dogs out and all of a sudden something came running at me with the dogs behind… I think it was a cat and the dogs made sure it kept on moving… so glad it was faster than the dogs…

I am not a cat person either. I was when I was a kid, but not now. They are just ODD animals and I want NO part of owning one! My dogs keep them away for the most part 🙂 Glad it didn’t hang around!

First, check with your neighbors. It may have been out for adventure. If not, I would set a live trap. If you catch it, then take it to the authorized folks in your area. If it is agressive, it may be ill. i won’t elaborate. Also, it could be a cat that’s been dropped off on the side of the road by creeps that don’t want it anymore.
Not a cat person myself, but also don’t want creatures being abused.

I like cats and dogs as we have both. Would never let a stray in the house of either, but if it can survive the outside at MY house…it’s a keeper!

I’ve got a good “cat” story for you! When we first moved to “our mountain” (as I like to call it since we are the only humans around), I heard what sounded like our cats fighting outside (we do have cats…lots of them! Sorry, now you won’t be able to come visit me!)…so I went to tell them to knock it off. It was pitch black and I just grabbed my husband’s sandals by the back door and went off into the woods. “Here kitty, kitty” I began to call in my most entincing voice. My husband was hot on my heels, but since I had his shoes he could not come after me very quickly. After a while he said, “Honey, come over here right now! That is NOT a LITTLE cat!” The meowing/fighting had stopped as soon as I had started talking to it, and I bet that mountain lion was trying to figure out what the heck was going on!
Hope you have better luck with “your” cat!

I remember hearing a scratch at my door late one night. I just thought it was my cat. When I walked toward the door, all I saw was a ‘bandit’ mask. That darn raccoon scared me like you wouldn’t believe! Thank goodness I noticed it wasn’t the cat before opening the door. I just leave the porch light on now.

oh, judy, i would have jumped out of my seat if i’d heard thumping at my front door at night! we have a porch swing, which is right in front of our bedroom window and one night i heard the swing squeaking like someone was on it. made my hubby go check it out and it was a cat up on the swing! now, i do like cats and i do like dogs, but i don’t want any more than what we have right now. no strays, thank you very much! the guys brought a beagle home a couple weeks ago and tried to get me to let them keep it, but i’m the kind of person that goes in whole hog when we get an animal – it has to have all it’s shots, flea baths, de wormed, all that stuff, before i will allow it to come inside. and we just can’t afford to do that with another animal right now. we have one dog and two cats. that’s enough! i will say this, i won’t go without at least one cat because i’m terrified of mice, and i won’t go without a dog because i’m home alone at night quite a bit. and i like my dogs to be BIG. but of course, i love beagles too… how’s speck doing? you haven’t talked about him for a while. i hope he’s okay and i haven’t missed something.

During winter we usually have one good hard freeze. I’m an indoor cat and dog person so my pets are inside most of the time unless we take them out.
Every single neighbor cat knows that ours is the house to come to during the freezes. We have our dryer vented under a porch so it is warm under there and I put food and unfrozen water out for them. I feel really sorry for them having to be out when it is SO cold.
All that said…. once the two cats we have now have lived their full, happy lives there will be no more cats here. I am SO sick of cat hair everywhere. These are only 3 and 5 years old though, so still a LONG time to go. 😀

Cats invariably showed up on a regular basis at my grandparent’s farm near Santa Anna. They were usually somewhat wild but got a little friendlier when food was given to them. Most of the time, they were from a neighbors house quite some distance away, just going back and forth to anyone who would feed them. Crazy little creatures.

I am a cat lover. I also love dogs. We have a Pom and 2 cats. Even though I love cats, I would never let a stray in the house. Both of our cats were ‘gifted’ to us when they were kittens by some uncaring person who just dumped them. My husband says our house must have an invisible sign that says ‘SUCKER’ on it. LOL They were both taken to the vet, checked out and spayed before they became indoor kitties. Now they are indoor/outdoor cats because they hated being cooped up. I doubt that Speck would appreciate a feline friend. LOL Even though the cats were here before the Pom, Buddy would love it if they disappeared. I hope the kitty found his way back home.

I love both dogs and cats, but dh is allergic. I hate seeing anything suffer and would worry that someone dumped the cat at the side of the road. A kitten found us that way once while we were camping at some land we owned (sadly we own no more) and we couldn’t just leave it. We found a distant neighbor who agreed to take it to the animal shelter, but ended up keeping it. Such a cute little thing! I do understand not everyone is an animal lover.

Never had a cat when growing up and neither my father nor my husband liked them- my son brought one home one day ( now 12 years ago) and six months later joined the Air Force. I didn’t have the heart to get rid of the cat and well now we have had her for most of her life! Don’t know what we would do without her!

We too live in the country and have a large population of feral cats – we have had them all fixed after several seasons of births EXPLODED our population. Our population had not grown since all were fixed, but last fall we had a half grown kitten come to the porch in late evening and after I got her fed and tamed enough to push her into a trap and took her to be fixed, she had become the nicest kitty (indoors now) with 4 others who were tamed as very small kittens (mothers were feral). There are people who drop off animals in the country. We found a Golden Retreiver at our gate during an ice storm about 5 years ago. Found a home for her with a wonderful family with children. Country living….you never know who or what may drop in!

I don’t know about scorpions, Judy, and I think a chicken is too big for a cat, but there are a couple feral cats around here that help me out with my chipmunk problem.

Didn’t Speck bark when the cat hit the door? he is neglecting his watch dog duties. hahahahaha

Did the people you purchased the house perhaps own this cat. It’s odd the cat would hit the door twice—

We are serious cat lovers. I can’t imagine never having a cat. I would have loved to have the white kitty.

Minnesota Farmer : We also live on a farm and must say that the cats we have keep the mouse population down. We also “inherited” 2 big labs that love us AND the cats. The antics are too strange to explain! I am allergic to cats, horse and rabbits. So no cats in the house for me. But all the cats and dogs like to sleep in the barn and some with the cows. They seem to get along just fine. Always have critter stories to report.

Several years ago my MIL was found petting a “cat” that was on her porch. It was dark out and she had heard a noise and the “cat” had let her walk right up to it and pet it. She even took it out a little cat food. All in the dark so as not to scare the poor thing (her words). When my FIL turned the light on to see what she was doing, they discovered her “cat” was a skunk. In the dark, she hadn’t realized the difference.

a cat wouldn’t come to a stranger unless it were very lonely (used to company) or very hungry. if it returns, the humane thing to do would be to entice it into cardboard carton (assuming you don’t have a live trap) and bring it to a shelter where they can try to find a home for it or where the owner can find it if he’s even looking for it. it’s mean that people dump their unwanted pets on the road near houses instead of just taking them to shelters themselves. if they just neutered their animals in the first place, they wouldn’t have to get rid of the kittens and puppies. half these babies get grabbed by predators and the other half starve. it’s really ugly to see the remains. that one is not a feral cat if it came to you. i have no cats, but i would feed it and bring it to where it could find a family or at least be fed. if speck were lost, i know you’d want a kid person to do that for him.
JudyL says
I guess I’m not very humane! 🙁 Speck is my third dachshund and because I never let him go out without a leash and because I watch him and my previous dogs just like I did my child, I’ve never had a missing dog!

2 lost dogs have ended up in our garage overnight waiting for their owners. one came to the door sad-eyed after escaping from home without his tags (golden retriever) and one snuck into the yard when it smelled bbq. both times we fed and watered them and reported it to the police. eventually some owner got to the police looking for Fido. they were told where the dog was and came to get them. who knows where they’d end up if no one took them in for a short while. in the past (waaay past) we had pets and sometimes they do sneak out. i hope someone would look after them for me until i got there. unless it was a grasshopper, of course!! then they could feed it to their chickens. or ride it around the yard. LOL.

I haven’t seen any pictures or heard anything lately about Speck lately is he ok?
