This morning I mostly piddled around in the sewing room and the yard and then Vince took off at noon and we went to a few places he had been wanting to go down south of here. He loves San Saba and wants to try to find a place on the river there. Good luck with that, huh? Finding anything on the water isn’t easy most places.
When we got home, I went straight to take a nap and slept 2-1/2 hours. The last two nights I hadn’t gotten much sleep and it caught up to me.
Once I was awake, I got two baby quilts quilted. Both are use and abuse type quilts. The first is the one made with the owl fabric.
For the first time, I used Minkee for the backing.
It wasn’t hard to use, didn’t have any problems with it stretching but even with a lightweight batting, this is not a quilt for a newborn. It’s pretty heavy. I think it will be good if they want to put the quilt on the floor and let the baby lay on it once she’s a few months old and then it will be good for dragging around in the car on those cold Missouri days.
I quilted it with just a quick meander.
Then I did this one and didn’t use any batting in it, just the Minkee for the backing.
I’m not sure I like how that feels without batting but I’ll wait til after it’s washed before deciding if I’ll do that again. It’s a better weight for now but it looks kinda deflated without batting.
I had the Minkee scraps in the trash when Vince came in.
I knew exactly what he was going to do. He loves going through the trash to see what treasures I’ve thrown out. He picked up the pieces and felt them and wanted to know about it. I showed him the back of the owl quilt and his response was just what I expected . . Will you make me something with this? Maybe . . it depends on his behavior the next few months!
That’s it for today. I’m heading to the house to try to get a bit of knitting done. Camp Loopy may end before my project is done!

Been wondering about the Minkee, let us know how it washes. I hope you get to see the that baby girl soon!
John goes through my scraps also and then when he finds something he likes “Wouldn’t you like to make something for the couch out of this?” translated means for him. Geeesh, he has got several now to choose from!

Judy, both of the baby quilts are cute and bright. I think either would be nice for a baby to lay next to – especially the Minkee side. You are such a great grandma.

Have done quilts for my little g.g. and used just the Minkee backing. Washed beautifully and the resulting texture eliminated some of that “flat” look that came from no batt. My wee one was a July baby, born last year, and the first quilt was for immediate use so didn’t want the heavier weight. Was perfect! Love both of the quilts!

Two great quilts for Andelina. I haven’t used Minkee but my friends who have say it washes up nicely. I think you’ll like them after they are washed. I finished up one quilt top today and started on the blocks for the pattern you posted. 12 done at lot more to go!

I have made a few baby quilts with minkee. Last year was the ‘year of the quilt’ i made each of my siblings a quilt for their birthdays (i have 8 siblings). My youngest sister said she wanted one with the baby fabric on the back, she is always cold. I quilted it and it turned out wonderfully. came out very soft and cuddly.

You could add a layer of Flannel instead of Batting to the quilts. I’m going to try and quilt two quilts tomorrow, if DH is still feeling the effects of Hay fever. Good luck with your Knitting project. LOL on Vince, make him a pillow from the Minkee. That would be easy with your scraps.

I also used flannel instead of batting (washed the flannel first since it shrinks so much) and it worked really well.

I made my husband a completely minkee quilt for Christmas last year, the animal stripes kit. It’s surprisingly lightweight when you have it over you. I was rather shocked. It’s not hot at all.
So I bought the watermelon/turquoise kit. Haven’t made it yet though.

OH I hate Hate HATE working w minkie!!!! it slips it slides. made a few quilts w it (4 babies were due) used it w some other things as pieced quilt. The kids still love it, unfortunately i used batting, and flannel backing. they are so HEAVY the poor kids sweat under them!!! I was thinking they would be used more as floor blankets as it to play w…… 4 yrs later they still sleep w them.
I tried making a bear w it. found if I attached the pieces w a sticky tape and a ton of pins it stayed in place better…. still hate MINKY.
what is the secret to stop the slipping???? when you sew.

i did the rest of my cutting last night and am all set for a sewing day today. i like the idea of using the minkie scraps to make Vince a pillow for his recliner!
I think we’re in for a day of on/off rain here, but i’d much rather have that than have to deal with a swamp fire in Summer like we did a couple of years ago. that was miserable!
love the baby quilts!

I haven’t used Minkie yet, but people I know that have liked it for baby quilts. Their only complaint was that it slipped. Guess I will have to find out for myself one of these days. Finished binding on a quilt, made cream puffs and a meatloaf for supper. Hadn’t made any puffs in a long time and it was either puffs or cookies, and you know which one won that contest!! Have a great weekend!!

I think after his rooster wrangling episode, Vince really needs a quilt with Minkee. It’s kind of soft and cuddly, just like him.

Cute quilts! I’ve not used Minky yet, so I liked seeing your comments about it. Let me know what you think after you wash them.

I made a throw with a minkie backing for our daughter and her family when Minkie first came out. It washes up beautifully. However…the black, dark green, and dark colors are a real mess with little pieces freying as it’s cut and worked with before the quilt is fully finished. But it’s all worth it for the yummy, soft feel!
