While Vince was wandering the aisles in a flea market type place last week, I happened upon some old magazines . . really old — some were from the 50’s and 60’s.
How about these dresses? Remember this style?
I remember my grandma wearing dresses like this.
Somehow, I just can’t see this ad appearing in any current magazines!
Look at this ad!
If you don’t have the time or training to make quilts by hand . . you can make them by machine . . And, for 25¢, you could get the Tulip Bowl pattern or home machine quilt making instructions and catalog by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to them. How long since you’ve been able to get anything by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope?
Times have certainly changed . . so much!

I don’t know Judy, really old magazines-I didn’t consider myself that old!!!!! Actually I think my Mother had a few dresses like that. Don’t think I have those patterns anymore! I used to have the early Workbasket magazines. Got rid of them when we made the move overseas. Put enough stuff in storage. They would be fun to look at now tho.

From the ’50s and ’60s, huh? Really old? I don’t think so! I’m quite a bit older than those magazines and I don’t consider myself “old”!

Oh, come on! A 50 or 60 year old magazine that’s in good shape is old! A 50 or 60 year old car (or Chevy S-10) is old! A 50 or 60 year old quilter . . not so old. I’m right there with you . . born in 54 and I don’t consider myself old. It’s all relative.

Sorry Sandy! If you predate those magazines, you are far from being a spring chicken! But age is only a number!!!!!

While going through my mother’s sewing room last month, I came across many of those “old magazines” and those type patterns. And I must admit I remember sending a quarter taped to an index card along with a stamped self addressed envelop… where has the time gone? LOL

I, ahem, remember those patterns. I think I may have made one of two myself when I was younger. I also remember SASE for things. But isn’t Mountain Mist still around? Seems I recall their batting. Glad you don’t consider us babyboomers old! I’m 62 & still run circles around these youngens!

Those dress patterns were tricky! Lots of pieces, lots of darts, and plackets and fitting. In the mid to late 60’s the pattern companies radically simplified styles–now that I think of it, I’ll bet they were imitating the garment industry which figured out that simpler shapes cost less to produce. (And were more forgiving for a range of body types.)
Those quilt patterns make quilting look easy, too. I cut out a magazine pattern (Family Circle, circa 1975)–if FC had the pattern, of course I could make it. It was for a Mariner’s Compass. No surprise that I didn’t get farther than buying the fabric!

I’m tempted to send a quarter to that address and see how long it takes to come back to me…… Cincinatti 15, Ohio. Definitely before zip codes!

If you find any McCall’s magazines, with the Betsy McCall paperdoll still attached, I’ll be glad to take them off your hands. I cut all of mine out of my grandmother’s mags, and now, I collect them to remember her by!

I have a bunch of my mother in law’s old Workbasket magazines too, dating back to the 40’s, before she even married. No idea why she saved them sooo long, but I love looking at them for the reasons you say!
Congratulations on your new baby granddaughter! Hope you get to tickle those toes your own self very soon 🙂

I remember my mom making a blue dress like the one on the left. It was beautiful, but it got ruined by the dry cleaners, after only a few wearings.
I wonder if you sent in a quarter, and the envelope to that address would they still honor that ad?
