8/2/2012 (9:50 a.m.) No more comments please . . the drawing has been done!
Seriously . . can it be because I’m getting older? Time is flying! Seems like just yesterday I was talking about New Year’s and what all I wanted to accomplish this year and here it is August 1 and when I blink my eyes, it will be September 1 and then I’ll be much closer to having some not so uncomfortable temperatures!
Now that 2012 is more than half over, what are some things you really want to accomplish before the end of the year? I’m not asking for a list like “love everyone more, be nicer to my husband, be a better housekeeper” but I’m asking for some real tangible things you actually might accomplish.
Here’s a few of the things I was thinking about today.
- Make sure I end the year with at least 12 pairs of socks finished.
- Get 12 quilts to Alycia for QOVs. (So far I’ve mailed none!)
- Get a few more of my UFOs finished . . that it’s a losing battle to finish UFOs if I keep starting new projects.
Over all, I guess I want to just spend more time in the sewing room. With the garden almost done, I should be able to sew more so that’s my “last 5 months of the year goal”.
Leave a comment and tell me some quilt related things you really want to get done before the end of the year. Tonight or in the morning, I’ll draw a winner to receive another gift pack, valued at approximately $50, from Kelly Ann’s Quilting.
Shirley Albertson Owens (sao) says
I want to work on my UFO’s for sure and I am about two months behind in my COLOR CHALLENGE….how did that happen…….?? Someone I know, got me sidetracked knitting in the Ravellenics while at CAMP LOOPY EWE – not mentioning any names…..LOL. I do want to get my quilt-making-groove back on though!

First and foremost! Finish handquilting a double wedding ring for my older son. It is an extra large queen size and I am about half done.
Next up is to make a race car quilt for my great nephew to have when he moves into a big boy bed.
It that leaves any time there are some applique projects to work on!
Those things alone should definitely keep me busy!
Mary C in WA says
Like everyone else I’d like to finish more UFO’s. I want to finish my year better than last year. I have a special Quilt I want to quilt for our Quilt Festival this year. So, using some of the Feather Lesson’s you shared will help me a lot! Thanks, Judy!
Nolene says
I need to get more handwork quilting projects set up so when I have time to hand sew, I have the projects ready. I normally have several to take with me such as an applique project, grandmother’s flower garden, embroidery quilt blocks, etc. Except for the grandmother’s flower garden, I have no packets to grab. I also would like to try to get some Christmas quilts made/finished–even if it is only one. Just depends on how much time I get at home.
Krista says
I want to get better at using my new long arm, and finish the 5 (6? 7? I’ve lost count) quilts which are waiting to be quilted.
Rosalie says
I made my list a couple of days ago – this October is our son’s 25th wedding anniv and I haven’t made them a quilt yet, so that is on the list as well as a Christmas tree skirt for the other son and his growing family. I have the twin boys (due in November) quilt tops done, but still have to quilt them before the end of August. And then I have handmade Christmas ornaments for my siblings (with photo transfer of pic when we were kids) to make as well as ornaments for the little grandkids tree! Whew – I’d better get busy!
Vicky says
I want to get the two baby quilts done, and then hopefully a couple of quilts that I never finished. Most of them are real close. And get the new flooring in. Oh, yeah, and world peace! 🙂

My girls will be back to school next week, and with them out of the house during the day I plan to finish lots of unfinished projects and work on some Christmas gifts. 🙂

I would like to finish 1) embroidering blocks for my snowman quilt, 2) finish the 12 UFOs on my “A” list, finish 2-3 counted X-stitch projects that are started…if I got those finished, I would feel successful for 2012!

I would like to make more QOV for Alycia. Last week, I finished #18, and since I have plenty of fabric left, I hope to reach #24 by the end of the year.
Rita E in AZ says
I would be so delighted to finish quilting and binding the ufo’s that are already sandwiched. That means I must not start anything new if my thinking is right.
joanna says
By the end of the year make or finish:
Two pairs of socks. I’m not much of a knitter, but tried sock making at a nudge from “you-know-who” in Texas. They are so much fun and logical. Quilting: finish 2 queen sized quilts with 1 1/2 tops made, make 3 more kids’ quilts for donation and make at least one more American Hero Quilts, Vashon Island, WA, charity for injured service men and women. Thanks for the little push!

I have an Aunt Millie’s hand applique project, would love to get all those blocks sewn down. AND maybe another UFO hand applique project as well. It’s in the line up. But like you I like starting new things so time will tell.

I will dig out all my UFO’s (both quilting and crocheting).
I will make a list and prioritize them.
I wll complete two UFO’s.
I will not begin any new projects until the two UFO’s are done.

In the next week I’ll finish up my granddaughter’s 16th birthday quilt. (Sh-h-h, don’t tell her!) Then it’s on to a quilt that will be a Christmas present for a young friend. I have the top finished. After that I have two table runners to finish. Will I get to my older UFOs this year? Only time will tell!
Donna says
I would love to have the rest of the piecing done and be ready to move on to the next section of applique on my wallhanging.
Quilt the tube quilt from this year’s retreat.
Actually do the Carpenter’s Star feather lesson. I have the top all pieced, just need the time to load it and quilt quilt quilt!!!
Kathy Wilson says
My goal is to complete the CTS quilt this year. Can’t wait for Saturday to get the next blocks!
Dora Scheer says
I knit, quilt and do tatting as well as other needle crafts. However, my goal for finishes before the end of the year is to finish my knitted shawl (and maybe start a second), finish a quilt for my bed, and continue quilting (maybe piecing) some prayer quilts for our church’s prayer quilt ministry. (School starts in less than two weeks, so I hope I don’t find it consuming too much time and energy.)
Debbie says
When you mentioned the next 5 months I just about choked. Boy, oh boy! Time sure does fly by. I will keep plugging away on my UFO’s and start thinking about what I can make for people for Christmas. I would really like to finish a mystery quilt from 2011 that was slated for my bed! 6 clues and I’ve only done 1. It would be nice to achieve the goal of making my bedroom a sanctuary before the end of 2012.
Joan in NE says
1–Finish BOM quilt for our guild project
2–Finish keep robin–needs to be quilted and an embellishment added
3–try to get to some of the pile of quilts waiting to be quilted
——————————
all has been put on back burner since March as DH had hip replacement and complications–so most of my time is spent taking care of him and garden “stuff”.
carolyn says
well yesterday I ran my sewing machine over my pinky finger while I was trying to strighten out the top. (I use a mid arm) they extracted the needle in the ER, but think that there still might be a small sliver in there….. So for me I’d like to just finish ANYTHING in the remainder of the yr. top of my list is the BB quilt I was working on (great nephew) a BB quilt for Childrens Hosp(cincinati) and I have 2 tops I’ve been piecing…..5 that are in my head….
SharO says
I really want to spend at least 1/2 day each and every week quilting my stack of tops.
Laurie Henderson says
I want to make some Christmas stockings for homeless children; finish some family presents and finish a redwork project for me
Stoney Monte says
Oh my…You read my guilty quilty mind. I just bought a full sample fat quarter of Dimples, along with another fat quarter bundle from Ladyfingers Studio and when I got the package Saturday, I enjoyed it for all of two minutes before I realized that I have two quilts to finish for my guild’s quilt show, ten quilts for kids that I do monthly, a scrap quilt I want to do from my assortment of men’s shirts and a star quilt from fabric a friend sold me so she could lessen HER stash. Then there is that ten year collection of reds and blacks that I have been hoping to find the perfect pattern for .
OK, now I should confess that I have began finishing all my UFO’s in January of this year and the two quilts for the guild show are the last of my UFO’s. But with the list of new projects I want to do, it won’t be long til UFO’s begin to accumulate. Am I insane or am I just doing things just right?
Tonight I just finished the last of 14 charity hats for kids that will be delivered to a school near me. They give out the hats to kids who show up in our harsh winters without one. I have promised another 16 hats before October. There. My confession is over and I feel better. Now I better get busy!!
Here’s to a productive rest of the year!
Cindy b says
I would like to continue finishing UFO’s. I have been pretty good about not buying too much fabric. I also want to finish quilting a couple of downy quilts for kids.

Nancy says
I want to average quilting one of my stash tops each week for to the end of the year. I also want to continue processing all the bags of scrap that I have accumulated into usable shapes and sizes.
Pam in KC says
Quilted related things I want to accomplish by the end of the year.
* quilt 3 quilts for fire victims
* finish my DWR that I started in 1999
* finish the blocks to my Christmas BOM that I started in 2003 – bonus if it becomes a top by the end of the year.
* get caught up and finish the Just Take 2 top that I started in February – I have no idea how far I’m behind now
* finish last year’s Christmas gifts – quilted purse & doll quilt
* finish the Eeyore quilt I started in May
* complete another 18 Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler blocks;
* finish quilting Diamond Links
Now if I can just prevent myself from getting distracted. I just took my machine in for repair, so no piecing for at least a week. That gives me time to put the grommets in on the purse, prep the applique for the Eeyore quilt, hand quilt on the DWR and prep a quilt for binding.
D. Clear says
I just completed a tote for my mom. I have cut a queen size quilt, but I have not started to piece it yet. A friend of mine is pregnant with twins and I have two baby quilts to make. I just finalized the fabric choices for them. I have a quilt top that I have had for four years and each year I promise myself that I will quilt it, buy yet it still lies..LOL! I have a lot to do before the year ends.

Clean my sewing room
Finish at least one UFO
Figure out what is wrong with my IQ ( I think it’s the wheels not the actual computer, just no time to really look into it!)
Our business has been so busy, which I am totally thankful for btw, I’ve had no time to sew. By the time I get home my brain is fried and there is no way I can concentrate. THEN on top of everything else we will move this fall. At that point my only goal will be to get moved and set back up 🙂 oh and the rails on my longarm powder coated.
Dot in NE Georgia says

Becky I. says
I have at least 5 UFO’s I want to be finished before the end of the year. I have finished 2 this year and several last year but I really want these finished. I keep making new quilts (and finishing them) but I want those UFO’s done so I had better get working.
Leslie Sorenson says
Complete the two quilts I’m working on for our guild’s community quilts. Design and complete a quilt for the guild’s show challenge. Work more on handwork while watching T.V. Use more stash fabric. Buy less new fabric. Spend more uninterrupted time with sewing and quilting.
Ann says
Wow your list is ambitious!!!!! 12 pairs of socks! I will be happy to complete one pair. I’m in a knitting revival and started knitting mittens and they are so much fun. Socks are my next goal. Will post about mittens on Friday. My quilting projects……. I would like to finish all the quilts I have posted about on Design Wall Monday there are at least 4 and today I started a new quilt for a friend of my daughter who is having her first baby in a month and she did get married before the baby was conceived!!!! The color palate was chosen from Vickie’s August choices. That made the selection process so much easier. Your blog and many others do prompt me to get things done. thanks Ann
tammy says
i’d like to get tops quilted for Christmas presents for my mom, my husbands mom, and my dad for sure and as many other family members and i can.
Patricia says
My goal for the rest of the year is to get started on finishing/working on this stack of quilt kits that I thought was a good thing to buy at the time! LOL! The problem with waiting too long is that I change my mind and tastes and some of them I just don’t like anymore. I guess that is when they need to move on to someone that still likes them!
Loving your new blog, by the way…..
Ava Crotinger says
That’s a great idea – make a list. I’m with you all the way on this time-flying-by-so-fast-I-didn’t-even-see-it-coming. What’s a girl to do? I’m still very new to quilting, like a baby quilter – so if I could just finish a quilt – that would be a real accomplishment for 2012!
Jeanette says
I want to have a successful bout of Physical Therapy for my neck and shoulders so that can sew again. 5 compressed vertebrae and a disc bulge gave really put a stop to much sewing/quilting. I have several projects that I want to get done as Christmas gifts for family and friends.
Gail Fines says
I’ll be VERY happy if I can finish the album quilt for my husband’s Mother! (Currently being hand quilted.) Also the pink one I am piecing now and Bri’s cross stitch Santa sock!

I need to get several more baby quilts and a few lap, quilts done for a craft sale in november!
Debbie says
Not just quilting related, but also knitting, embroidery, and any of my needlework. But, my quilting has come to a dead stop because of it. My sewing room/studio has come to such a messy state that I can’t continue without a complete reorganization. You know how they say that even within such a mess people can usually find what they need? Well, it used to be like that for me, but not anymore, LOL! So, the goal is, Clean up the sewing room!
Betty says
UFOs are going to be finished and new projects will have to wait, except for some fun postcard creations!
SaraF says
My goals revolve around finishing more UFOs as well. I have posted a list and am crossing them off as I finish them.
Gwynette in NW Arkansas says
I’m with you —- Where did July go???????????? I want to finish my grandson’s baby quilt…. he will be FIVE Thanksgiving!!!! Also need to make my daughter a twisted bargello for her birthday which was July 1. Then some projects for ME!! In all fairness to me, I had bronchitis most of July and slept it away.

Sew on the label and mail off a quilt for a young lady who graduated from high school a year ago June, sew the binding on the red/white queen sized quilt when I get it back from the long armer (is that a word?), finish my daughter’s wedding cross stitch before she celebrates her 11th anniversary in November and complete my bee 3rd quarter UFO that I haven’t even started yet. No pressure!!!
Linda in Calif says
I was just in the pool thinking about this same thing. I had already decided that I’m going to get my hubby’s quilt quilted. I’m going to try quilting feathers for the first time. And I’m going to start and finish a wall hanging for my sewing room. And last make a quilt for my mother, which will be a Christmas gift. Of course I’ll try to do the UFO Challenge, but seeing how I’ve only done two this year, I’m not holding my breath that I’ll finish those up.
Terri says
Last year, I started designing and making table runners for each month for my table. I got a Christmas themed December one, a snow themed January, Valentine’s day for February and shamrocks for March and that’s as far as I got. I’d like to finish them up by the end of the year and do raindrops for April, Tulips for May, Sailboats for June, Firecrackers for July, Sunflower for August, Falling leaves for September, and Thanksgiving for November. (I already have pumpkins for October that I did a couple of years ago).
Now that I’m working full time, I don’t have a lot of time to sew. The table runners are small projects and not a long term commitment in terms of time. Plus, they make my table pretty!!
Charlene S says
There are 3 UFOs that I really want to finish – Soccer Beauty, Saints Stars 2, & Halloween Spider web. I also want to get back into hand quilting. Also I want to get my machine quilting frame set up in the den. That’s a big project!

Becky M says
I would like to quilt and bind the tops I have completed. I also would like to finish knitting my first pair of socks.
Linda Hubbard says
I too have a growing pile of UFO’s.. they’re always on my “Gotta Get To” list… But top priority right now is making a new quilt for my daughter’s bed… Her old one is worn out, and it no longer fits her bed (a twin just isn’t big enough for a 3/4 bed no matter how hard you try). Her room has just been painted a nice fresh soft green, and it’s crying for a new quilt… Gotta make it happen! I have all the fabric – lovely batiks…just gotta find the desire to get at it!
Kelly Grace says
I would love to get a few of my quilts that are tops quilted. I also have about 2 quilts I’d like to get to the top stage. I’d also like to learn to hand quilt so I can get my hexagon quilt quilted.

Julie in GA says
My quilting goal for the rest of this year is to finish at least a couple more of my old UFOs. The UFO Challenge inspired me to try to make some progress on my collection of UFOs.
Amy (NW WI) says
My thoughts exactly!!!! AUGUST ALREADY!?!?!??!
Being a teacher, once school time hits, my quilting time diminishes exponentially! I really have one simple goal: to spend more time in the quilting room come school time than I did last year. I have so FEW finishes this year; very much off my typically mark.
Joyce Anderson says
I would like to get some of my own quilts quilted, instead of quilting for others.
Laura says
Okay, I have two baby quilts to make, I would like to finish the string quilt that is on my design wall, piece together the bee blocks, and quilt my little house quilt. I also promised my three sisters that I would make them each a set of placemats for Christmas.
Lee says
I’d like to have one, yes just even ONE, quilt finished completely by the end of the year. I’ve made progress on several of the UFO thanks to being part of the challenge, but I haven’t finished any yet. ONE completed quilt…that’s my goal.
Marla says
Well for one thing, I don’t want to buy one more piece of fabric until I use up half of my stash over the next 12 months. I am officially starting my own stash busting! I have been cleaning out my sewing room today and was shocked just how much I have accumulated and did not even realize it. I want to get 6 of my UFO’s done by end of December. There I said it. Now to do it!
Joan says
26 days until my two kids go back to school. I’m hoping for more sewing time then! At least I’m hopeful! Between now and Christmas I would like to sew make-up bags for 5 Christmas gifts. Of course, I need to learn how to sew a zipper first! I would also like to finish a lap size donation quilt and make another. I also want to make good progress on a Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt I am making for myself. So far I have about 20 flowers out of 130 done. I’ld like to continue with 10 flowers per month. We will see how it goes…..
Cheryl in Iowa says
UFO’s are going well…I hope that continues into the 2nd half of the year…I would love to get rid of the bins of fabric left from from my clothes construction days. I sorted it out years ago and it is stored away…..I’ll never use it…..Why is it I keep hanging on to it??
Sandy K says
I have three quilts that only need the bindings put on. It would be nice to give my two sons a quilt for Christmas. Hopefully it will cool down so I won’t feel the heat trying to bind the quilts in the summer. Plans on putting 3 sets of redwork squares into quilt tops. Lots of plans but do not have the energy, I wish I had more of a drive to get things done. Slowly plugging away.
Harriett says

My goals for the next 5 months – 1) finish purse 2) make 2 18″ llama pillows 3) BOM 4) 4 baby quilts 5) Swoon Quilt. That is my list and I will be very happy if I can get it all done. Then I look at the list a nothing is for me, isn’t that the norm with most quilters? Would love to win!
marcie says
I want to make a baby quilt for a great-nephew. My mother-in-law made baby quilts for each of her great grandchildren but at 92, she can no longer see well enough to do so. I’m hoping to make one to celebrate the birth of Bo and in honor of Phebe.

My goal before the end of the year is finish 2 of my three Edyta Sitar quilts using strips and applique. We have our quilt show in April of 2013, so really want them done before then. I also have two Christmas wall hangings to do for my daughter…this is really big as she doesn’t have any interest in quilting, but saw these patterns and like them, so of course, I immediately bought them. Then, as I am working on some small take along projects, such as wool pincushions, etc., I want to incorporate a few pieces for our fund raising botique. Man, I best be getting busy!

So much has happened in your life this year that you’d think it would have gone slower—-I know the feeling exactly! Goals for me quilting-wise are to actually finish all those quilts on the UFO Challenge list 🙂
I’d also like to get back to doing some embroidery, cross-stitch and wool applique. Hand work is so soothing.
Donna K. from N. TX says

Where to start.. I want to finish making the named leaves for my Tree of Life quilt, make more Linus Charity quilts for sick children, complete my stars of the USA quilt started about 10 years ago.. I could go on and on..
Joan says
One project I really want to finish is the quilt I cut for a retreat last year that is still sitting in pieces in the same bag I brought to the retreat – not one stitch has been put in those pieces.

I want to keep up my training and do well in the triathlon I’m doing next month, finish the quilt top for our bed in time to get it quilted for Christmas, finish putting the quilt top for my daughter together and get started hand quilting it, and sort through our books so that all our books fit on our bookshelves.

I very much see the year flying by as well……
I want to walk 20 minutes, 3 days per week to offset the hours I sit at the machine sewing. I will finish 5 more UFOs. I will make a SunFlower table topper for my DIL for Christmas and Coffee fabric placemats for my other DIL for Christmas and I would like to finish organizing my sewing room. So much to do and so little time!

I need to get my BOM caught up so I will finish on time for Christmas. I’m only 3 months behind… Ugh
Kate says
I’d just like to get a few more quilts finished. I’ve finished 8 each of the last 2 years and so far this year, I’ve finished only 2.

My goal for the rest of 2012 is to finish the charm square quilt top started a few months ago, take a quilting class at my local shop, and make at least one more quilt entirely from my ‘stash’.
Thanks. Judy

I just started quilting this year, with the idea of making a quilt for my king-sized bed. I saw sense and started with some smaller projects (baby quilts), but I really want to get that king-sized quilt of my dreams done this year.

I agree the year has flown by way too fast. Already I’m counting foggy days and thinking of all the things I need to do to get ready for winter. The things I want to accomplish by year end are: (1) Finish the wallhanging for my son; (2) Assemble the Christmas quilt that’s been in my UFO stash for too many years; (3) Figure out how to assemble the blocks from my wedding quilt (bonus would be to actually assemble them!); (4) Collect all the Christmas Town sampler blocks so I can make them in the future.

I’ve kept up so far (until this month) with the UFO challenge. I want to get caught up and keep going!!

I want to finish the Florabunda quilt. I have to finish the hand quilting, label and binding.
I’m trying to be realistic on this because I also want to paint my daughter’s bedroom and the kitchen, and a hundred more smaller projects around my house.
Susan says
Finish my two big UFOs: Orca Bay (somehow I scrambled some of the pieces as I was putting it together) and the Carpenter’s Star (just need the final border and I am ready to try some new mq techniques). Finish my first pair of socks (just cast on the other sock last night). Make quilts for my family with the yummy fabrics I bought in Hawaii. The list never ends!
Kathy Alden says
I have 2 UFo’s I really want to finish by the end of the year. I just got one done last week and these last two are just hanging on. If I can get them done, then 2012 will be a successful year for quilting.

So many things – there’s the delicious Bonnie & Camille’s Vintage Modern fatts begging to be cut up and I even know what I’m going to do with it! and the halloween quilt for my granddaughter that is giving me fits because why can’t I just sew a straight line already! This is just the tip of the pile to “I wanna dos” or as my GD would say “I do” “I do”
Gloria Yates says
Wow, what can I get done in the last 5 months?? I just retired last week and I have enough projects to keep me busy for years. I do have a wedding quilt to finish for my daughter and she’s been married for 22 years…I’ve told her I will have it for her 25th wedding anniversary and I don’t even like it anymore!!

Jill M in OH says
Oh, there is so much that I want to do!! But to limit it to crafting… I want to quilt and bind at least 2 more tops that I have finished from 2010. I’d like to finish at least 2 other UFOs and not leave anything that I start to be a UFO. Lofty goals! Oh and end the year in the black for my stash reports!
Laura says
Like everyone else, I am working on UFO’s. I have 5 tops to quilt before the end of the year. But I also have customer quilts to do, so that slows down my UFO completion. i’m trying to keep myself from starting new projects, but it’s not working!
Kris S says
I have a pile of charity quilts to finish and then it is on to Christmas sewing.
Teresa says
I have planned to make the mini block from My Heart to Your Hands as Christmas gifts for my sewing buddies. I was thinking one month but now I waited so late to start it needs to be two or three a month to be sure I finish. Also I have got to organize my sewing room. HA HA
Leslie says
Having just moved, I first need to get the house in order! Then back to my granddaughter’s big girl bed quilt. Next I want to finish a Christmas quilt, it’s almost done. Any other time will be spent on that stack of UFOs that need quilting.
Sarah N says
I can’t believe it is August either! Goals for the rest of the year: Keep going with the UFO’s! Keep up the clutter purging I have been doing this summer. And get my sewing room more organized.
Thanks for inspiring us!

My goals for the rest of the year are:
1) finish piecing the Double Duty top
2) quilt Double Duty
3)get the QOV to Alycia (quilt is finished, needs a label, pillowcase and wash
4) quilt at least one more UFO
I’d love to do more than that, but work is so absolutely crazy this year that vacation days just are not happening.
