Getting that first egg on July 4 was so eggciting! I couldn’t wait to go out there and fill up a whole basket full of fresh, brown eggs. They do take their time and they don’t rush just to please me. I get three eggs most every day. A couple of days I got two but for the most part, I get three. They’ll eventually work up to where I’ll get 10 or so each day but I have been losing patience with them . . just waiting for the day when I get four eggs in one day.
You can guess how happy I was to find 5 eggs out there . . when I was hoping for 4.
Have I said lately that I’m so happy to have my chickens? Every now and then we talk about how “tied down” we are, with a dog and chickens and we can’t go anywhere overnight. I always tell Vince that I get more joy every day from having a dog and chickens than I could possibly get from going off here and there and spending the night. Home is where I love to be and having the chickens and Speck here just make me love home more.
In MO, we had friends who would put the chickens up and let them out for us when we were out of town. Some day the big ranch house on the adjoining property will sell and maybe those folks will cover for us every now and then but for now, I’m just as happy as I can be to have my chickens and sleep in my own bed every night.

Jackpot! You know, I really like staying home best also. I’m lucky that my sister and brother in law don’t mind Ozzie sitting, but I love my own bed. Generally, when I have company, I let them take my room and I either sleep on the couch or sleep in the guest room (which is also my sewing room so sometimes the bed is inhabited by projects), and guests usually tell me I have the most comfortable bed they’ve ever slept in. Just a Sealy Posturepedic with a theramfoam topper, but it’s very comfy!

Ah, Judy–I should remind you that life will change forever once you are a grandma! You WILL want to be able to run up there at a moments notice. I think you should start looking for a chicken sitter ASAP.

You lead a charmed life, Judy. Don’t fuss at the chickens, they’ll produce for you, they love you. Talked about charmed life, they really have it al in their new digs. Vince did a great job.

I am waiting for my chicks to start laying….they are about 14 weeks old now so I figure closer to Nov. we should see something. BUT I can assure you when I do see the first one, I’ll probably lay an egg myself:-)

Good for the extra egg! What will you do with all of them when you get 10 a day? That’s a lot a day. Does this make up for the snakes and spiders and bugs, oh my! (lol)

Congratulations on the eggs! If you ever need “chicken sitters” (like when the grand-baby is born), you might want to try your local 4H club and/or the FFA (Future Farmers of America) club at the local highschool. Both have been very helpful when we’ve needed sitters or help with a project.

Soon you will have eggs coming out of your ears! Hmmm…so the big ranch house is for sale? How much land is there? How many cows can we run? LOL.
