When I went to the local meat market and asked for a fresh ham, the man said “Do you want a fresh smoked ham?” I said no . . just a fresh ham. Nothing done to it. He said “Do you want it cured?” I said no . . just a fresh ham. Nothing done to it. He said “You want a fresh ham . . nothing done to it?” Yep! That’s exactly what I want. Apparently not many folks ask for that so he had to talk to his suppliers and he called the middle of the week and told me he had my ham. I brined it for 24 hours and then stuck it in the smoker.
Left it smoking for a few hours and this is what we’re having for dinner.
Looks like a big old turkey leg, doesn’t it? Nope, it’s a ham with the bone in and you know what the best part is? The broth I’ll get from that big old ham bone!

Such a funny story. I grew up eating “fresh hams” and know exactly what you mean when you try to ask for something like that and you get kind of a blank stare! Ha!
