Do you know how hard it is not to harvest the asparagus spears that are popping up?
I planted 30 or 32 (can’t remember) roots and I think 24 of them have come up and are growing. Almost every one of them have little asparagus shoots popping up. Can you see the little asparagus spear at the base of each plant? For the first year or two, I shouldn’t harvest anything but let it continue to grow and make the plant stronger. It’s so nice to see it growing so well. I sure hope I can keep my hands off it and hold off harvesting any of it til at least 2014. Ughhh . . that seems like forever from now!

Ah, but it is so worth the wait. I planted mine 25 years ago and it has spread and is so easy–no bugs, no diseases (in our area), and the deer don’t seem to like it–anyway, our deer don’t.

congrats on asparagus coming up!!!! This was my first year to harvest. Our spring was so early picked first shoots in March but is about done now. the wait is worth it. Patience!!!!!

Hold off with the harvesting of those baby plants….it will be so worth it later on. We get lots of asparagus from our patch and share with our neighbors.

At the rate time passes 2014 will be here before we know it!

Once the asparagus has matured it so beautiful, the purple and green colors are art.

I would really have trouble with this. Asparagus is probably my favorite vegetable and I really love the really dainty thin sprouts. I’ve thought about growing some, but I don’t have a lot of space and knowing how long it takes, if figured it wasn’t worth it. With your large garden space though, it should be well worth the wait. I know! When the urge to harvest some strikes, just go buy some more yarn. ;P

I know how hard it is to wait for the third year. Many years ago I planted a bunch of asparagus and knew I had to wait to harvest so I waited and on the third year, we sold the house and I never did get my asparagus and probably the new owner just mowed it down.

It’s hard to have patience for such a delicious vegetable.

Oh, how this post makes me miss my asparagus bed! We had the nicest asparagus when we lived in Arkansas, and planted some when we moved down here. It did not make it in this extremely sandy soil and drought. It is such yummy stuff, and I really do miss it.

I have a very small asparagus patch that produced wonderfully this year…now, how do you get rid of the weeds? We always let it go to fern about June 1, and leave it, but the weeds are thriving. I’m thinking this fall we should cut it down and then till it, but DH thinks we’ll uproot the …roots. I really looks awful.

I thought you could buy 3 yr old roots so you didn’t have to wait so long. I love it too, but haven’t had a place to plant it . Your’s looks good.

I know how hard it is to wait. We’ve got some that is probably 15 years old and I want to move it all into a raised bed.

Seems like I remember that you have a birthday coming up. So I better wish you a happy birthday. Hope it is a wonderful day.

If you even bought 2 year roots, you could cut next year. You just do not want to cut as long. Some of those chicken droppings set aside for a while will be really good on your plants.

ohhhhh, I’d HAVE TO buy those older roots because there’s no way I could wait 3 years! I love asparagus. DH makes the best grilled (bbq) asparagus. Oh yum. Now I’m going to have to get some for dinner tonight. 🙂
