We’ve been in Texas less than a year and every day we love it more! There are so many wonderful places to explore that are within 2 to 2-1/2 hours of Brownwood. Dallas, Stephenville, Austin, Llano, Fredericksburg, Abilene, San Angelo and lots of places in between!
Spring in this area has been more beautiful than we could have imagined. Just when we think everything that could possibly have bloomed has bloomed, something else begins blooming. Several times during wildflower season, Vince said “How can one state have so many wild flowers?” The answer is easy . . This is Texas!
Recently Vince took off one day and we drove back over to San Angelo and spent the day. There’s so much to see and do there.
What all did we see on our one day trip to San Angelo?
The Visitor Center is not only beautiful but it’s full of information! It is one of most well stocked visitor centers I’ve ever visited. The folks working there were so nice and helpful.
The building is beautiful and the grounds are beautiful.
The Visitor Center sits on the Concho River, where they were doing some restoration work to the riverbank. It was a glorious spring day and many local folks were out picnicking along the banks of the river.
Notice the sheep on the lawn of the Visitor Center? They’re all over town. Here’s one that was at the YMCA.
The Sheep-Spectacular project is responsible for local artists painting sheep which are placed all around downtown. The above sheep is Lambscapes and is located at the YMCA. The sheep at the Visitor Center is “Welcoming Ewe”. Others can be seen here.
We also went to The Old Chicken Farm Art Center.
It truly was an old chicken farm that had closed. Now there are 15 arts and crafts studios, a bed and breakfast and a restaurant.
We also visited the Eggemeyer’s General Store on East Concho. There are things in this store to interest everyone! One side of the store is the cook’s delight! Bakeware, knives, tools of every kind, mixes, jams, jellies, gourmet coffee and tea, cookbooks! In the other side of the store, there are toys, candies, homemade fudge, and lots of seasonal items . . and much, much more!
Across the street from the General Store is Miss Hattie’s Bordello Museum. Miss Hattie’s is said to be West Texas’ most notorious bordello from 1902 until it was closed down by the Texas Rangers in the 1940?s. They weren’t open the day we were there but we want to go back and take the tour. They are open Thursday – Saturday.
We asked the folks at The Old Chicken Farm Art Center where we should eat lunch and they recommended Armenta’s Cafe on Oakes.
All I can say is . . if you want to eat there, get there early! That place gets packed! The food and the service were great. We each had one of the lunch specials. Here’s mine and it was absolutely delicious. I think we’ll be visiting this restaurant again on our next trip to San Angelo.
It was enchiladas with a creamy avocado/poblano pepper sauce. From our table, we could see most of the plates being brought out to other folks. We must’ve stopped our server a dozen times and asked her “what was that?” Everything looked so good! When our server asked if we wanted desert and she mentioned they had Tres Leches Cake, I couldn’t pass it up. Vince and I shared this piece of cake and still brought more than half of it home. It was a huge piece of cake and it was the best Tres Leches Cake I’ve ever had. Full Disclosure: I’ve only had Tres Leches cake that I’ve made myself.
We could spend a week in San Angelo and never get bored. The places we had wanted to go and didn’t have time to visit:
If you’re passing through or near San Angelo, Texas and have a few hours or a few days to spend there, you should find many interesting things to do and places to visit.

You and Vince are doing what we did after moving here-touring. Couldn’t do to much the first year but after that our trips to and from PA were always by different routes through Texas. I think within seven years we had been in all 254 counties and pretty much loving all of them!

It would have to be the Alamo. The last Top Chef was in Texas, I was surprised by how small the Alamo looked. It is definitely on my list of places I would like to see. When the boys leave home we plan on taking a road trip through the southern states – I don’t want to do it in summer when they have vacation.
Nathalie says
You don’t want to do it in the summer, period! It’s HOT here in Texas in the summer. It’s hot here, now!! (we have already had 100 degree days)

This is a very hard question to answer. I have been to Houston and briefly to some of the surrounding area, but most of our time was spent at Quilt Market and the Quilt Show that followed. I have two places in Texas I would like to visit. 1. Galveston and someplace close to that area that offers fishing tours in the gulf. 2. Austin for the walking tours and music. Both places would offer unique foods I have not tried in the past. Both places have great history and unique archtecture.

Dear Judy, once again you have filled my day with memories. I lived in San Angelo in the 40’s (as a child, lol) then lived in Hondo,( west of San Antonio), then Pasadena (by Houston), then Abilene, Snyder and back to San Angelo in 62. My daughter was born there. Then back to Abilene and now I’m in East Texas.

A little side trip to the Alamo, and I can now cross that off my bucket list. Next, I’m going to Houston some November!

Rosalie says
I have been wanting to go to the Palo Duro Canyon and see the play Texas for several years….maybe this year!
Diana in TX says
We’ve seen it 3 times and each time it’s just a little different. Love the way they use the canyon as the backdrop. If you do get there, there is a ranch on the left as you enter the canyon where they will take you on a jeep tour. You get to see a lot more of the canyon than just the part that is the park. we’ve done that a few times and once were there when they had the chuck wagon breakfast-all good fun!
Marie says
Would love to go to San Antonia and Houston wouldn’t be bad if the quilt show was going on. But you know, anywhere in Texas would be great to see. Haven’t been there in years and back then it was looking at the world through the windshield of a semi!!!

Fredricksburg – during peach season ;0) Have lived in Texas all my life, except for a couple of years in Germany courtesy of the USAF. My husband wants to see the Nimitz Museum, get some jerky and sausage from Opa’s and, since I used to live in the San Antonio area, I could memorialize several of the courthouses that I never took pictures of, because I didn’t know I was going to want to get one from every county back then! Maybe sneak up to Lowake for a steak… and on up to San Angelo, where we lived when we were first married.

I’m a native Texan so I’ve been criss-crossing this state for years and years. I’ve either lived there or visited there — just about any place you can name. Several of you mentioned Austin — lived there for 10 years — great town!, also lived in San Angelo (plus visited many many times), also Brownwood because of Howard Payne University, Wimberley, cute town, DD lived in Corpus for several years, I lived in Muleshoe and Hale Center in the Panhandle, Lamesa (just below Lubbock), Killeen (home of Fort Hood) It’s hard for me to come up with a place I’d like to go. I’ve been all over the Hill Country, Big Bend, the Davis Mountains, Houston, Galveston, Corpus, South Texas (Loredo, Brownsville, McAllen, etc) Metroplex, (you should see the Rangers play!), Panhandle (seen Palo Duro Canyon, musical Texas!, Amarillo, been to San Antonio any number of times, Alamo, River Walk, Menger Hotel, try Mi Tierra (good food and bakery) wax museum, If you do go to Brenham, go through the Blue Bell factory, interesting and you get an ice cream cone when you finish!! Okay, I guess one place I haven’t been is East Texas (except for Marshall) lots of antique shops and other things to do and see and places to eat, so that’s where I’d like to go!

Ah heck – almost any place in Texas is great in my heart. And we can all thank Lady Byrd Johnson for all those gorgeous wildflowers. <3

My sister lives in Abilene so I would love to come visit her. It has been so long since we have seen each other.

I’m a Texas girl and have seen every square inch of it more than once. Maybe I’d like to visit Mineral Wells again. The place is strange with it’s ‘Hollywood’ history and huge, closed down hotel. I’d like to go snooping!
Nancy says
Austin. Relatives and friends there. But Dallas and San Antonio have pulls, too. Thanks for the opportunity.
Helen Koenigl says
actually – there are several places I’d like to see – the Alamo is one. But I loved the Fort Worth Area when I drove through – actually the area I loved was south of there – very pretty. In terms of a place to go – there was a restaurant – I don’t remember the name – just how to get there – and the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was fantastic (it didn’t hurt a bit that they spoiled me rotten!!!) – would love to go there again!

Hi Judy,
Can’t believe I missed this post! Not to late I hope.
I’d like to visit Austin, TX, and come by to see you, Vince, and the hens.
Thanks, Joanna

“The sun done ris’, the sun done set, and we ain’t out of Texas yet!” It’s almost 900 miles across Texas on I10, so there’s lots of Texas to see. I’ve been to Houston many times to see grandchildren (and to quilt festival), to Corpus, Amarillo, San Antonio, Fredricksburg, but I’ve never been to Austin. Think that’s where I’d like to visit next. Is that very far from your farm/ranch?
Norma says
My son lived in Stephenville for a couple of years. The mesquite trees amazed us. He now lives in Conroe and it is a beautiful town. I wouldn’t hesitate to move to Texas if I could take the remainder of my family with me. I love your state for many reasons.
Karla says
If my nerves could handle it I would love to go to Austin (Birthplace of ME!) I would love to visit the many quilt shops and take a trip through IKEA again boy do I love that place!. I would also go visit the hospital in which I was born. Its nice to think about those greater things in this state which give so much fun and pleasure visiting.
Deb Sarhan says
I’d come to Brownwood …. to visit with Spec ! Course, then I’d drive to Fredericksburg to find a very special sister like quilter, who is also a WW leader, and maybe get her to convince me its time to get back on track !
Shari says
I’ll add this here too in case the one one the 8th doesn’t work. I’d like to visit South Padre Island.
Shari says
South Padre Island for me plz.

Being a quilter, my choice would be the International Quilt Festival in Houston. …but the blog tour has certainly made many places very inviting.

The Riverwalk in San Antonio would be my place to visit.

I would love to go to the Dallas/Fort Worth area again…one of my dearest friends is there (on a small farm) and I would love to see her again! It’s been forever!

I’ve seen lovely pix of San Antonio – looks like w great place for a vacation!

My husband lived in San Antonio for a few years before we met. He said there is always something going on in the area, a craft show, a celebration, etc. I would like to visit that area. I would like to go to the quilt festival in Houston, too.

Have only driven through the panhandle so any place would be great to see but for some reason the first place that came to mind was El Paso.

I would like to take TEXAS by James Michener with me and just start traveling the state; there’s so much to see and learn. People to see in Brownwood, Sanger and a couple other places. We were on Galveston Island a number of years ago for most of January and loved it. The hurricane happened since then. I’d like to go back to see how well they have rebuilt.
Cathy says
My first child was born 40 years ago at Larado Air Force Base and then we lived on Randolph Air Force Base outside of San Antonio in 1973. I would love to visit San Antonio again to see all the changes that have been made on the River Walk. It was beautiful then and I bet even more so now.
Thanks for your blog. One of a few that I have to read every day!

I’ve only been to Houston and Galveston. Houston for the cancer research hospital when my BIL was there 6 years ago and Galveston on a day trip on one of the days he felt pretty good. I wouldn’t mind going back but my husband has no interest in returning, unresolved issues with his brother’s death. All the pics look so interesting.

So happy you blogged about San Angelo! We are moving there in August! It’s a smaller town compared to Tampa, but I’m ready for the slow & beautiful Texas days. Although I will say I wish I could leave during the summer.. LOL Just kidding! Wonderful post!

I guess saying I’d want to visit YOU wouldn’t count, so I will have to say I’d love to go see all those painted sheep in the Sheep Spectacular at San Angelo. We have dolphins painted in much the same way near us in Rehoboth Beach and it is such fun to look closely at them and the names are all so clever…seems like it’s that way with those sheep, too.

We LOVE Texas, especially the Port Aransas/Mustang Island area. It is a great place for retirees (“Winter Texans”), and we’ve spent the last eight winters in Port A. Most countries don’t have the diversity the great state of Texas has.

If you look on google maps and zoom in near the cost, there are a series of aqua lakes between E Ocean BLVD 100 and Brownsville Port Isabel HWY 48 labeled Vadia Ancha that look really really interesting. Would love to know what they are or if they are man-made or whatever!

The second place I would love to visit is the Yellow Jacket Ranch. I hear they have been working really hard planting their garden and trees and have cows who come to visit all the time.

I just love Mexican food. My favorite place is in San Antonio at La Cazadora on West Ave. It’s in a little strip mall and they have the best Puff Tacos on earth.
