Finally, there are two chickens that like me! Monday, all the chickens were scared to death of me. Yesterday, two of them have decided I’m their best friend.
I wonder what kind of chickens these are. They really are colored a bit like my red stars were but they have dark blue-ish brown eyes and my red stars had kind of reddish orange eyes. These two that let me pet them will just stand there for the longest time while I talk to them and pet them. Wonder what caused them to change their mind about me.
On the other hand, those dark red chickens . . they are the craziest chickens ever. See the sweet little light red chicken on the bottom and the crazy dark red chicken on top? We crack up watching those dark red ones.
The floor of the coop has a thick vinyl and we have wood shavings on top. The dark red chickens want to see what we’re doing but they’re so scared of us. Everything they do, they do it at breakneck speed. All 7 of them will come running toward me when I open the door, then they realize . . oops, we’re scared of her and they try to stop but they slide and while they’re sliding, they’re trying to get back on their feet and get away from me. It doesn’t matter how many times a day I open the door . . they do that same thing every time.
I surely hope these chickens look better when they’re adult chickens. I’ve heard that chickens lay eggs the same colors as their ears. I wonder if these chickens will lay dark reddish brown eggs?? I believe these chickens are Production Reds or maybe Rhode Island Reds. If so, they’ll probably lay brown eggs but not as dark as Marans lay.
This one was sitting on the roost yesterday and I tried to ease my hand in there to pet her. She went straight up off the roost, probably 2 feet, and came back down and landed on the roost. I wonder if there are chicken olympics??
I’m so glad to have chickens again!

Chickens …. better than TV.

My goodness, they have gotten bigger. I have to tell you, Judy, I was driving by my local Ace yesterday, which has all manner of farm stuff and they were carting a chicken coop across the road by forklift. All I could think when I saw the coop was how much nicer the one Vince built is compared to the one I was looking at. 🙂

Hooray for chickens! When we get land I plan on having a few. You should try to get a video of the chickens running towards, then backpedaling away. It sounds hilarious.

They’re all kinda halfway scared of the camera. Anything new scares them. Maybe I’ll get Vince to help me get a video tonight.

Those red ones make me smile everytime you post a picture.

Okay – now I’m contemplating “chicken ears”. I just never throught about them having ears – of course they do – but now I’m picturing people ears on the sides of chickens heads. ROFLOL Guess I’m going to have to find a photo of what a chicken ear looks like. 🙂

I feel happy everytime I see your chickens. Maybe they will all love you soon!

I miss my chickens!!! Most definitely!!! Even the roosters – which I would scoop up and carry around (so they wouldn’t gouge my daughter!) and – yup – even the ones that would try to gouge me – and I would carry upside down (wondered often if they figured that was the normal carrying position! ; D !!!)

I think one of my “hens” is going to be a rooster. I keep meaning to get a picture of her and forgetting to do it. Roosters scare me!
Janet says
Is it possible that the chickens just want to run around outside, and know the door is the way to get there?
JudyL says
They’ve never run around outside. Next week the temps will stay high enough that we can let them out every day. They did the same thing when they were in the shop. I think they’re just funny chickens.

I love your chickens, and I’m looking forward to seeing their eggs! I’m thinking the friendly ones are the smart ones who know from whence/whom cometh their food!

I sure am getting a chuckle from this post Judy. I can’t believe they grew so fast. And ya, I hope they look better when they’re full grown also. Thats a nice little looker in the 2nd photo, cute, and getting her comb too. The other one is questionable. LOL Sounds like fun to me. So enjoy and keep the stories coming.

I watched history channel and they said the color of the ears is the color of the eggs. I am enjoying this real life TV.

I usually try to spend at least 30 minutes every day handling the chickens when they are babies, to get them used to human contact. Mine are now outside in one of the stalls in the barn, so i go sit on the ground and talk to them, and most times I end up with several in my lap at one time 🙂
They are fantastic therapy.

I love your chicken stories. My daughter’s kindergarten class has been hatching eggs and she’s having lots of fun with them.

You could always get a chicken cam! I figure one of these days Vince or you will want one so you can see what wildlife ventures by at night and they have them for other things so maybe a chicken cam would be just the thing!!!!!
Glad you are getting afew to like you now!

I got my first chicks about 3 weeks ago and am still working on a coop for them, right now they are in a box in the living room and i love just sitting and watching them. They even eat out of my hand now and wait for their bran flakes. Yours look like mine, which are Golden Comets that I bought at Central Tractor Supply. They also had Black Giants straight run and I picked up 3 of those. Luck is not on my side cause I think 2 of them are roosters. I’ve named them Jeckle and Heckle 🙂 Keep the pics coming Judy, I love the escapades!!
Barbara says
They look so funny with the scrawny necks and long legs. Definitely waiting to turn into beautiful swans, er, chickens.
Suzy (from Ontario, Canada) says
Top one looks like it might be a Golden Comet. The darker one looks like a Rhode Island Red (at least compared to this pic I found online: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7326810@N08/640223399/)
