When Vince plants a tree, he goes all out to make sure they have every chance of surviving.
He starts by digging a hole halfway to China! Sunday I was talking to my parents on the phone and I looked out to see he had the big garden tiller down in the hole and it was about to get the best of him. He then took the wheels off the little tiller and that worked much better and wasn’t beating him to death.
Our dirt here is so nice!
He gets the dirt in the hole all loosened up, then puts in peat and who knows what else. Planting trees is one of those things I don’t even want to know about because once I know about it, he may expect me to help! 🙂 My job is to keep the new trees watered and I can do that easily . . without getting dirty or sweating!
The new pear tree is planted! Look how pretty it is . . looking out and not seeing houses and roofs and cars!! Have I said lately how much I love living here?
The pomegranate is planted and it has probably a dozen little pomegranates on it. I sure hope they stay on and mature.
On the left is the peach tree we planted to replace one that was here already that had died. In the center is one that was already here. On the right is the fig tree. And . . look at the background? Do you think I love living here? Yep, I do!

It’s fabulous you have found your happy place. 🙂
Ernie says that poor boy needs a post hole digger. LOL He’s still pushing for tractor accessories for his buddy Vince.

Looks good Judy! and Vince looks like he has lost some weight. You will have to update us on your progress. I, too, am going to WW and so far doing well.

What a rich life you all have! I’ve always heard we need to dig a $50 hole for a $5 tree & Vince certainly has done that! Those pomegranants are wonderful! Happy farming! Becky G

hello, did you know that if you drill a hole into the earth and place a lit firecracker (M80) into the hole and have it blow up under ground that it loosens the dirt enough that your trees will grow better. I am certainly not encouraging anyone (Vince) to blow themselves up so be careful. I was married to a farmer and Mother Earth news had a coolio article on it, many, many years ago.

Get Vince a 12 inch auger for the tractor 🙂
JudyL says
We don’t have many more trees to plant right now. We’ll see what the future holds but so far, we’ve only planted 4 trees and that doesn’t justify the cost of the auger.

I can’t wait to read about pomegranate recipes! We have a tree that has been producing for a couple years, but most of it goes to waste because I don’t know how to use the fruit.

I really enjoy seeing your pictures. I have a severe case of tree envy! We moved from eastern Long Island, NY 2 yrs ago, where it was heavily wooded. The only time there was open space was when the area had been cleared for development. We moved to north Dallas two years ago & the trees in our area are no more than 10 years old. But, like you, I love living here in Texas; especially since there at least 5 quilt shops within a 20 minute drive.

You are right on about not learning something that you don’t want to do from then on. And, yes, I think you may have mentioned a time or two that you love living there. 🙂 I do hope Vince doesn’t go tree crazy like my husband has over the years. There’s no way we can even begin to use all that fruit, and you don’t dare let other people onto your property climbing ladders to pick fruit. If they fall and hurt themselves they’ll sue you for everything you have. So, he has to pick the giveaway too. I think he honestly believes that he will be able to do that when he’s eighty. Geesh!

We have 2 pomegranate trees in our yard and get 250-300 poms off the 2 of them every year without doing a blasted thing but water them!! Do you think I make my friends happy when I give them bags full of poms every September? Why, yes I do!! Pear trees, on the other hand, require a little bit more attention. . . However, you’re at latitude 31 and I’m at latitude 39–we’ll see what the difference is. . .

My dad always said you have to plant a $10 tree in a $100 hole, a $40 tree in a $400 hole etc. Looks like Vince has it about right! Lookin’ good out there!
