A blog reader, Joni, asked how and why I decided to go with the tan “toothy” part of the blocks. Here’s the design with those tan “teeth”:
And here it is without:
It’s really just a preference. I don’t think anyone would look at either completed quilt and say one is wrong and one is right. The blocks are going to be either 11″ or 12″ finished and I felt that was an awful lot of “white space” without the teeth. To me, when I look at the second drawing, it looks like those little nine patches were an afterthought but when I look at the first drawing, the tan “teeth” are kinda like a shadow of the nine patches and that keeps those nine patches from appearing so “stuck on top” of the design. I feel that those little teeth sort of “anchor” the design and bring those outer blocks together with the center of the quilt.
That’s just how I see it . . you all may see it completely differently and like the second drawing better. That’s why we all love EQ so much! We can make it any way we like it!

It’s great, but I’ve been thinking all day about #1. You need to turn that into a pattern for sale! I’d buy it!!!

Thanks, I can see what you mean about the white space. I appreciate your answering me so quickly.
I’m gonna have to go into EQ and just keep experimenting.

I really see what you mean and it’s awesome that way! Great pattern!

I like the teeth! I can’t seem to do things like that with my EQ. Guess I need to play more…….or read the book.

Play! I still haven’t read the book! 🙂

I tried using eq about five years ago. It was plain awful. I have used a mac since about 1987. I will probably never use eq because it is not intuitive. Besides I can’t see paying $200 for software to make my mac run windows, then extra to upgrade eq. For me it is just not worth it.

We all have choices to make and whatever works for each of us is what’s best for each of us. I can’t imagine quilting without EQ and I would use it even if I had to buy a Windows laptop just to run it!

I’m a Mac person too but I DID buy a Windows laptop JUST to use EQ. It is not intuitive and I have an awful time with it but this Saturday I’m finally taking a 7 hour class and hopefully I’ll be closer to making some designs I’d like to make. Your wonderful quilt designs, Judy, have inspired me!
