We have a puny chicken. I hated to isolate her because (1) they like to be together and not isolated and (2) it will be hard to put her back with the others once we’re sure she’s ok. But, we couldn’t take a chance on her being sick and the others getting sick.
I hope she gets better.
Her sisters are growing and though I haven’t a clue what they are . . maybe Rhode Island Red or “Production Red”, they sure are pretty.
The others are growing and are at that gawky adolescent stage . . not enough feathers and not enough fuzz. They’re the least friendly little critters I’ve ever seen. No matter how much I try to handle them, they panic and run into each other and into the side of the bucket every time I go near their pen. I think they’re all crazy! All I have to say is . . they’d better lay lots of big eggs because they’re never going to be pet chickens.

My mom used to raise chickens and sell eggs. The chickens she had were white…some sort of Leghorn. Their job in life was to lay eggs and none of them were friendly. If anyone but her went near them they’d about lose their minds they were so scared. Hope the little red one recovers and can soon rejoin the flock.

Oh no, not a sick chick…..hope she recovers soon. My new bunch isn’t very friendly either. I even block them in at one end and pick them up but the next day they are still running and trying to hide.

Just saying….unfriendly chickens are easier to eat….those old bitty hens tasted the best in stew!!! Just a reminder of my past!!!

Judy, I found a lady near me that sells fresh eggs and natural beef products. I stopped by today to try her eggs. They were $4/doz. and were brown eggs. I asked what kind of chicken she had and she said “all kinds”. On my way up to the door of the farm house, I spotted about 50-100 young chicks. She told me they were a month old. They must have a good egg business with that many chickens. I’m having eggs and bacon for breakfast tomorrow morning. Can’t wait to see if I can tell any difference.
Hope your little red one gets better soon and can rejoin his friends.

@Dar I can only IMAGINE the amount of eggs that woman is getting! We have 28 hens (4 breeds) that are currently laying (we just purchased 6 more of another breed but they are only 4 wks old) and we get approx. 2 dozen eggs a day!
Thankfully, this is all part of my daugthers Agriscience project for high school and she is allowed to sell the fresh eggs to the faculty and staff. 🙂
@Judy: Sure hope your quarantine girl is doing better. Sometimes those “weak ones” just need a little extra time to catch up.
