Suppose you’ve been on a diet for what seems like forever . . maybe it’s been months or maybe it’s only been weeks. You’re losing weight ever so slowly, you feel fine, you still have lots of energy but you seriously miss sweets . . like ice cream and root beer . . I love root beer floats!
Then suppose you know the weather is maybe going to be bad and you look out the window and see this:
And, this in the other direction:
And then, you remembered you have this:
What would you do? Just asking . . because I think you know what I did! 🙂 And it was so worth it.
Vivian oaks says
If you don’t allow yourself to splurge once in a while, one day you will crack and eat everything within sight! It’s much smarter the way you did it! How about rubbing off some of that weight loss mo-jo, and pass it along to me…I definitely need it!!
Donna says
So you had a treat, now get back on the diet guilt free. Everyone needs a treat ONCE IN A WHILE! You think vince doesn’t nibble at work once in a while if someone has something to share?
Patty says
The only thing I would have done differently is put it in a bigger glass.
Bon says
I totally agree!
Vicki W says
I would chow down because you can’t diet EVERY day! And then I would sew.
Roberta says
That sounds really good!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I have the makings here too.
Do the farmers in TX have shelters for the cows??? In NY they have to come in the barn in winter but would stay out in weather in the summer
Hugs!!!!
terri says
No, cows in Texas live in the open year round.
Sue H says
Good for you! I’ve been on a serious diet for a couple of weeks. I’ve been soooo good. Yesterday a family member had some medical issues and I’ve spent a lot of time at the hospital, with more in my future. Came home this afternoon and had coffee and THIN MINTS. Four of them (after all, that’s what they call a “serving”) They never tasted so delicious. Now I’ll be good again. Feel so much better…
Alma says
Life is short. Eat dessert first! (or in this case chug a root beer float!!)
Judy D in WA says
It isn’t a diet, it’s a lifestyle and your lifestyle includes root beer floats.
And really, isn’t it kind of like juice??? 😉
Johanna says
Yup. I have those days. Not skies that look like that! You can keep those! Hope you “weather” the storm ok! I think the whole trick is to let yourself have a treat – a portion controlled treat (whatever that may be!) just work in the calories for the day. Weight Watchers gets tricky though if you don’t choose the right foods. They are a bit taxing when it comes to milk and dairy. I found if I drank too much milk, I’d run out of points but if I kept track of calories I could have milk too. I REALLY want a root beer float now – yum!
Sharon Spingler says
You have to use up that ice cream before it melts when the power goes out. Life is short……eat dessert first.
Dar says
I would have had my root beer float even if the sky DIDN”T look like that!!! I like them too. It doesn’t even have to be root beer. Any soda will do in a pinch! I love ice cream whatever way it comes. You did GOOD!
Sue in Scottsdale, AZ says
Judy, Weight Watchers lets you do this. Just count the points (use your extra 49 for the week) and keep on going down the road. You’re doing fine.
Krista says
Yumm. I think you made the right choice 🙂 And with the right brand of root beer, too.
I’ve been watching your lake levels, ever since I was there and saw how bad it was. It looks like the lake’s up about 4 feet since the retreat – and apparently today is trying to add to that.
Lisa says
That’s what I would have done. How many women do you think skipped dessert at the last dinner on the Titanic?
Kathy Stahl says
Yep have the root beer float!
Julie in WA says
Yeah, sometimes it is good to give in to the craving and then just move on. I think the key is to stay within limits—like not have a 72 oz root beer float.
Angie says
Since I diet for many reasons. Good health being the primary one, and knowing how tempting certain foods can be, and I’ve learned the consequences. It’s more about the calories in the portion size. Now, I do this for everything I eat. Most ice cream portions are 1/2 a cup. I would do the same with the root beer. I read labels all the time. I have found it’s not what you eat, it’s how much of it I eat that get me—and then comes the hard part, at least for me.. If I indulge, I must exercise. A mile walk out to the mailbox and back home, or on the exercise bike. No squirming out of it. Actually if I do the exercise 1st, then indulge. Sometimes I won’t even eat what I thought I craved! Enjoy the craving, get over it, and then get back on track! (or on the bike or the trail or whatever to burn it off) :o)
Karen says
I have always read that people who are dieting shouldn’t deprive themselves of desserts – even if it is just once a week – really is it going to change things that much – doubtful -of course I am one of those people who were born with skinny genes 🙂 so I do not deprive myself at all! On of my daughters is skinny and the other sometimes has to watch her weight, but she always has dessert at least once a week and enjoys it.

oh how i miss blue bell….and A&W with it just makes it so much more special.

One root beer float doesn’t ruin your new health plan. Just don’t have one every day!

Keep up the good work!

If I saw those clouds I think I’d figure it was my last meal so well worth it. Assume you survived the storm–and enjoy the treat.
Liz says
Glad you went for it….just figure out the “recipe” and add it to your “favorites” for next time.
Hope you are staying dry – we’ve had over 2″ so far here in the OKC area.
Libby says
You did the right thing!
ga447 says
Just between you and me I would have the float, I was on a high protein diet and I needed a piece of bread – had to have it, now I am going to do weight watchers. It isn’t easy, going to doctors in 2 weeks.
NancyB says
Yep, that’s what I would have done, too.
Dawn-Marie says
I am only answering because you asked otherwise I tend to keep my opinions to myself. You are on Weight Watchers which means you keep track of points sooo make sure you track the correct points for what you are eating. It is set up so you are aloud to indulge once and a while. If you cheat and don’t keep track the only person you are shortchanging is yourself. And the only one you need to answer to is yourself. What I would do is eat a small one and then I would add an extra mile to my run or if it is a spin day then and extra song to my spin. I am on weight watchers and I do indulge but I still keep to my points. Oh and weight is suppose to come off slowly. That is the healthy way to lose weight.
Melinda says
I would have the root beer float. As long as you aren’t having three or four a day or one every day, there is no reason not to, and if you don’t, that will be all you can think about. Remember, it’s not a “diet.” It’s an “edit” of your lifestyle.
Erin says
Those storms don’t look too nice Judy! I hope you have enough roor beer floats to get you through the day!!!
pdudgeon says
i agree with angie–i would have done the walk first to get my metabolism pumped up and then had the float.
Linda in NE says
I’d have had the root beer float too….maybe in a bigger glass. 🙂
Those clouds look nasty….I forget, do you have a storm shelter there at Yellow Jacket Ranch?
amy says
Well, since it’s Blue Bell…. and not all of us can get it where we live … and we totally miss it — I’d say enjoy every minute of it!
Vicky says
Just put a freezer in the storm cellar for the ice cream, and enjoy it while you’re down there!!!
Diane Wagner says
Let’s see…..root (vegetable), beer (hops=grain), ice cream (dairy). Sounds like a well balanced meal to me!
Swooze says
I would have that root beer float but not in bucket size. Then I would tweak my diet to try and lessen the starch and up the protein and fats a little. That will help tame the cravings.
Deb says
I have been “dieting” (or changing my lifestyle…) for MONTHS, and havent lost an ounce. Mostly I am doing it before I get the big “D”. Cutting out carbs, eating better….and have been pretty good, but today, I had to wait for the car to get new tires, and the cafe I went to had HOT FRESH CARAMEL ROLLS. Caramel, my true weekness…had to do it. So light and fluffy…And it was AWESOME. Now, back to being boring! Although, we are heading to Chicago for the quilt show, and I am SO having White Fence Farm corn fritters and chicken! Sometimes, you just GOTTA do it!
Winona says
A little ice cream therapy never hurt anyone. I am sure it was delicious!
Penny J Holliday says
Judy ~ I too would occasionally indulge in a small root beer float or other treat with no regrets! You go girl!

I’d be right there with you.. *if* I were dieting. OK, even if I *weren’t* dieting…and I should…but I won’t go there. I hope you savored every drop too! 🙂
Debbie R. says
Good for you!
Elizabeth says
Make a nice float, take the knitting the laptop some good headphones and head to the shelter, and maybe the chicks….

Joan in NE says
Oh yes, the sky looked something like that earlier, I had a scoop of ice cream with marshmallow creme on top. Yummy. and yes it was worth it.
Marla says
You deserve it! When I first started reading my first thought was: if I should die today in a tornado, what is just one more root beer float? After all, if I am dead, an extra few calories won’t matter. LOL!
Margaret says
It is so ok to do this once in a while. I know how hard it is to lose weight and see everyone else having all the good food. Since I had my wls I can not eat sugar. It makes me ill but all of our friends love ice cream and sweets. I have to sit and watch them eat that stuff all the time. I know how you feel when you deprive yourself so go ahead and treat yourself. You never know the power might go out in the storm and you don’t want that stuff to spoil. You are just thinking ahead.
Robin says
I’ve been on a low carb/ high protein diet since Sept and have drank my shakes and ate my protein bars and have lost about 30 pounds now (finally) truthfully there were some weeks when I gained a pound or 2 and hadn’t cheated or changed a thing I was doing and the week I went away and sort of pigged out while at a conference- i lost weight!Sometimes you just need to confuse your body.
Besides the power could have gone out and we just can’t have melted ice cream around or warm root beer either!! 🙂
Hope the storms wern’t as bad as they looked.
Becky I. says
Yep! Looks like comfort food to me and the perfect time for eating comfort food! I’m certainly with you on this one. Bob says, ’tis easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
Barbara says
Well…it’s been a whole two weeks since that ‘gold brick egg’ incident lol
Sue H says
Reading back over these comments makes me think of Jean, a former co-worker, who was on a “diet”. She didn’t want her young daughter to have body-image issues, so she wouldn’t use the word “diet”; instead, she said she was on a “health plan”. I like that much better than the word diet, and I think I’m going to start referring to my health plan. And there should be room for a little cheating; right now I’m having a glass of red wine. I feel healthier already!
Perry says
I hope you put 6 scoops of blue bell and 1/2 of the bottle of root beer in a large glass, and when that was gone, you did the same thing with the other half. That’s what I love to do, and ever so often the stars and the weather align and “everything is right with the world” and you sink into the oblivion of a root bear float made with A&W root beer and Blue Bell Ice Cream! Priceless!
Jennifer says
I would do the same thing you did! Hope it was yummy and the storm wasn’t too bad.
Carol Victory says
I am sure what you did! We just got Bluebell up here a while back and I currently have 9 half gallons in my freezer. 🙂
Karen says
Well, I’m on WW too – losing slowly. Yesterday I treated myself to a Jilly’s cupcake. That probably means nothing to you – but Jilly’s cupcakes are the best I’ve ever eaten and I couldn’t even blame it on threatening weather! Sometimes you just gotta give in to the craving, then start over.
Carol says
I would have done the same thing 🙂 Ya never know!!
Marie says
Oh Judy, with the way you watch everything else and the way you cook, I honestly don’t see this making a whole lot of difference. If you just sat on your butt all the time, it might be a problem, but girl, you will work that float off outside in no time. Hope you savored every bite!!!
Andrea F says
Oh my goodness…I love Root Beer Floats too…just saying…every now and then they are so yummmmmmmmy.
lw says
Mmmmmm….root beer floats…
I have been trying to lose the same 20 lbs since I turned 48– and nothing worked until I tried a very counter-intuitive diet. There’s not much sugar in it, but there are no restrictions on traditional fats (coconut oil, lard, olive oil, butter, cream, etc.) They recommend eating 2500 calories a day (healthy foods, which they define differently than the FDA.) The theory is that we’re actually undernourished on the standard American diet, so we need to eat what our bodies need. It sounded wacky, but there’s good science behind it. I’m down 7 lbs now. It feels weird to finally have something work.
Sonya says
I would say dont deprive yourself of your favorites, or you will crave them:) So I would of had a Root bear float:)
Also have you thought about putting in a storm shelter. They really are very reasonable, and so worth it, in my opinion:)
Diann Smith says
You aren’t losing fast because one you are a woman and two you aren’t that overweight to my eye. Also don’t you count points on WW and then spend your earned points on whatever…usually that means something w/ calories!!!!
I think when you CRAVE something your body is telling you that you need it . Besides low sugar in the blood means you might faint. So give in to your urge every now and then and congratulations on healthy eating… I see lots of it in pics on your blog nearly every day.
Peggy Reid says
everything in moderation. doesn’t hurt to indulge but keep the diet too.
Crystal D-G in WA says
I would have had 2! 🙂
This week, I think I will introduce my children to root beer floats.
Doe in Mi says
Looks to me like you should have grabbed the goodies and run for the basement! Thats what I would have done.
Brandy M. says
LOL – A woman after my own heart! Yumm!

That is EXACTYLY what I would have done!!! Hope you enjoyed it :-)…won’t hurt a thing
