Remembering how my other chickens loved dandelions, I was thrilled to see dandelion blooms outside yesterday. I knew my new little chickens were probably too small to eat the flowers but since I knew it wouldn’t hurt them, I picked a few and put into their box.
They scattered way away from the flowers and then gradually, ever so cautiously moved a bit closer . . but didn’t get very close.
They never did eat any of them by they wore themselves out trying to see what this new and obviously dangerous item was.
Sometimes when they sleep, it looks like they just dropped . . I guess that’s what they do at this point. We need to get a roost in there for them.

The chicks are so cute. Someone sent me pp. from Mongtgomery Wards 1934 wishbook a few days ago just to show cotton prices back then for quilting…sigh..but also in there I saw an ad for 25 day old chicks for $1.90. Thought of you. Of course all the things needed to go w/ raising chicks was super cheap also.

That’s precious! They do look worn out 🙂

Won’t need a roost yet until they’re wing feather are big enough for them to fly up there, even if it’s low. Usually 3-4 weeks old.
I had to stare at ours the other day to make sure they were still breathing, so still and tired out sleeping. We have them in an old bulk tank that is about 3 by 7 feet with heat light in the center and food and water away from the light. Big area for so few chickens but they will grow into it quickly.
Hugs!!!!!

Our last ones were hopping up on a little low roost be the time they were a week ot two old. These are starting to flap their little wings and fly a little so we’ll stick a roost in there. They can use it if they want but don’t have to use it til they’re ready.

The chicks are growing so fast! They sure are cute.

They are so cute! Poor little things – something scary dropped in and
just wore them out!

So Cute!

Aw! They’re adorable. I can’t wait to see what their personalities will be.

These just aren’t nearly as friendly as my previous chickens. I speak gently to them and they about have heart attacks. I stick my hand in the box and they about break their necks trying to get away from me. By this time with the other chickens, they were hopping up on my hand. Not a good sign!

Until you said this, I was going to advise keeping an eye on the one that fell asleep almost on the dandelion…thought it might be the boldest.
Can you put dots of color on their heads (while they’re sleeping) to tell them apart?
CJ says
Aren’t they sweet? So entertaining to watch… and unlike a puppy, they stay entertaining in adulthood! 🙂

One is always off to the side. I wonder if it is always the same one.
JudyL says
There is always one that’s separate from the rest and I’ve wondered if it’s the same one but haven’t been able to figure it out.

Cute little chicks! We had chickens before and I agree–it does look like they just drop where they are to sleep. Just like baby humans falling asleep anywhere the Sandman hits them. I wish I could do that!

I started out putting feed in my hand. My babies are 7 days old and come running (if they don’t drop off to sleep) any time I put my hand in their brooder.
